No doubt.. where has this thread gone?pk500 wrote:I guess this post qualifies to be included in "The really great TV thread." I have always been a Sony TV guy, but now I'm done. Spent over $2000 on this TV some years ago and I'm not happy at all with the durability.
Next purchase will be a Samsung or something else - probably go 50" too.

Re: The really great TV thread
I'm about to pull the trigger on this TV, no more spending tons of money for a good brand name:

A 50" for $500 and all 6 reviews are excellent. It's taking 3-4 hours for our 46" Sony TV to heat up and the picture to become normal. I found out it's an LCD board which costs more than the TV is worth now. What a bummer.
Oh well.. time to move up to a bigger TV in the living room and I'll put this one up in my daughter's room and just leave it on.

The Mad Men finale was awfully disappointing compared to the previous two episodes. I really don't know what to think. I'll have to watch the whole season over again to see if I can figure out where they are planning on taking the season next year. The last episode was really confusing overall.

The finale was a classic "setup show" since the bombshells all dropped and exploded in the prior two episodes.
Still, you had to love to see the return of Draper's "sly dog" grin in the final scene last night.

Re: The really great TV thread
Mad Men took a page out of the wire where you drop the bombshell before the last episode - then use the final eps to resolve some things & setup up next season. The cliffhanger, of course, being "which Don" in sitting in that bar? The one was says he's married or the one who is "over" his current wife & up for trouble. I'm leaning to the later. Overall, it was the best season yet. The writing was just so freaking sharp, it constantly blew my mind.

Re: The really great TV thread
No question. Weiner & Co. simply blow away the almighty Aaron Sorkin for TV script writing.greggsand wrote:The writing was just so freaking sharp, it constantly blew my mind.
After a while, Sorkin believed in his genius so much that he wrote to impress critics and his circle of writer friends more than create realistic dialogue. The last couple of seasons of "The West Wing" were a perfect example. I don't care how many Ivy League degrees politicos may hold, NO ONE talks in an endless stream of witty, double entendre-laden repartee like those scripts. No one.
"Mad Men" features brilliant, crisp, smart and -- most importantly -- believable writing. Very similar to Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson's work with "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "The Wire."

Re: The really great TV thread
Thematically, MM feels like a show that is really winding down, so it's kind of interesting to consider there are two more seasons. Not sure where they go from all the "Is this all there is?" malaise of the season.
They should just do what The Sopranos would do when it needed a shot in the arm and introduce a whole slew of antagonistic baddies that were just released from prison.

Re: The really great TV thread
Weiner was all over the media saying he was following the Sopranos, Wire formula of having a climax episode followed by a denouement in the finale. This used to rile people up with the Sopranos as well, but it makes sense from a writing perspective.
I think the really intriguing thing is the interplay between Don's line to Peggy about how you help people and "then they move on" with him setting Megan up with the commercial gig.
Sometimes Weiner's writing is a bit too on the nose for me, as with the juxtaposition of the scene where Julia Ormond basically says to Roger that she's incapable of or not interested in nurturing with the scene where drunk Megan tells Don that she's only good for sex. Effective yes, but a bit too heavy handed sometimes.

That article, minus all the heinous ads all over the thing (irony not lost on me), kind of explains Weiners thinking. Yes, climax in the middle and denouement in the finale, but he also is trying to impress upon us that the firm is becoming quite a bit more successful than we are realizing, which in turn gives them their swagger back (i.e. Don at the end with that grin PK was fawning over, lol). I think next season is gonna be pretty epic.
This season was fairly slow from a huge storyline point of view, but I think that was on purpose. We'll see NOT soon enough. These day off seasons for that show are downright painful.

I haven't seen the finale yet but what would be the climax, Lane found hanging?
Maybe my recollections of previous seasons are hazy but I don't remember as many shocking moments as Megan's mother and Roger, Lane hanging and Joan earning her partnership in earlier seasons.
Probably need to re-watch the previous seasons.

Re: The really great TV thread
The two shows leading up to the finale were definitely the climax...Weiner even said that. So it's not like it was that big of a shock that the finale was a little bit of a letdown...but as PK said...the sly smile at the end should give us enough to go off of to look forward to the next season.wco81 wrote:I haven't seen the finale yet but what would be the climax, Lane found hanging?

TV came today.. so far, looks as good as my Sony once did and 4" bigger for 1/4 of the price.
I put the Sony in my office because I just can't see putting the 46" Sony in the basement or giving it to someone since it will at times, come out of its funk and keep its picture. It's only composite in my office though, no HD.. and I'd have to admit.. even with a low quality picture.. looks freaking awesome in my small office.
My wife was like, WTF.. really?

I dont have HD in my office but its where we game (It should be called the game room seeing as though i dont have my own business anymore) so we have the 360 hooked up so it pretty much acts as our HD reciever.MizzouRah wrote:TV came today.. so far, looks as good as my Sony once did and 4" bigger for 1/4 of the price.

With Netflix and Espn apps who really needs HD recievers anymore

My daughter bought her own x360 so it's just a big ol TV in my little office.. the picture goes in and out though.. so no gaming.Jimmydeicide wrote:I dont have HD in my office but its where we game (It should be called the game room seeing as though i dont have my own business anymore) so we have the 360 hooked up so it pretty much acts as our HD reciever.MizzouRah wrote:TV came today.. so far, looks as good as my Sony once did and 4" bigger for 1/4 of the price.

Very impressed with the Sceptre thus far, but it's only been a day. HAHA!

The second season in particular is hilarious -- every episode is funny. Season three was a little more uneven but still some very funny stuff. Can't wait for it to start up again.
Also, I don't know if Netflix has the extras, but there are some good deleted scenes and bloopers on the discs. There's one in particular where Ruxin is "rosterbating" and trying to say his classic "Eli Manning, that goddamned mouthbreathing dummy" line and can't do it without laughing.
Re: The really great TV thread
I have to say, after seeing the Girls finale, I liked it much more than Veep (although I'm a few episodes behind). I see why it's a polarizing show but I think it's really well done and not like anything else on TV right now, whereas Veep is basically The Office in The White House -- funny, but very unoriginal. I was hoping more for a political Larry Sanders.

FWIW, Katie Aselton really gets it done. Definitely hitting in the middle of the MILF lineup.
