This is the biggest issue...from Bill Barnwell on Grantland:

With an RG3 deal off of the table, the Dolphins' search for a starting quarterback gets a little more desperate. A week ago, they had three options to pick from, and now they're left with Manning and Matt Flynn, each of whom has warts. Although that may not sound like an enormous difference, the RG3 trade eliminates a good amount of Miami's leverage and leaves them one signing away from having no leverage at all. Let's say that the rumors about Peyton Manning wanting to sign a contract before free agency begins are true. We detailed why that's a good idea for him last week. If Manning wants $20 million in guaranteed money and isn't willing to work out for a team before doing so, don't the Dolphins have to say yes? If they say no and somebody else agrees to Manning's terms, then they enter free agency with Matt Flynn as the most notable quarterback on the market. That will push Flynn's price tag up dramatically, and he might be able to get $20 million guaranteed from the teams who weren't able to land Griffin or Peyton. So if you're the Dolphins, would you rather give Manning $20 million in guaranteed money or push that toward Flynn? The fact that this trade happened on March 9 as opposed to April 9 is probably going to cost the Dolphins a lot of money.

dbdynsty25 wrote:Wow you guys are horrible fans. Yes, they didn't trade up to get RG3, but who says they are out of the Manning derby? I disagree with them getting Manning more than most people, but it's not like they were going to tie the guy down and make him sign a contract. Free agents test the market, and Manning is damn sure going to do that. He'll be in Miami soon, I mean he does have a damn home there. So we'll see...but I personally would rather them get Flynn since they didn't do the RG3 thing (which was my preference).

And Dan LeBatard Rod? The guy is the Skip Bayless of Miami. Blowhard through and through...just likes to hear himself speak.

Maybe he doesn't feel the need to visit the Dolphins if he has a home there, but still seems odd he wouldn't make a visit -- if he indeed is going to make a decision tomorrow.

I think he winds up in Arizona. Warm weather, easiest division in the NFL (even with Niners resurgence), no QB controversy, and Larry Fitzgerald as a target.

Agreed Dan Le Batard or as he's called in Miami Le Baturd has 2 sides. He is Miami's version of Skip Bayliss when he speaks but boy the dude can write columns. I can't stand listening to him on the radio but I always read his columns.

But he does have Miami FO pegged for what they really are...."a bunch of goof balls". And I didn't even mention Carl Peterson.

Agree with you here too.

If I am him, its where I go. You get your weather, your Fitz, your coach and the knowledge that another qb who was winding down his career took this route to a SB appearance.

Arizona is 16.4 million over the cap, so I'd think they would have some trouble signing Manning.

Agreed which is why I think he'll go to Denver. Those guys are $50 MILLION under the cap. 8O

And ruin all the goodwill with Tebow? I mean I guess there is no better QB to kick Tebow to the curb than Manning, but the Tebow fans are numerous and passionate. We'll see...I'm expecting a team other than Miami, Denver or AZ to step forward soon. It always seems to be the unlikely teams that sign the big names. See Nnamdi Asomugha last year for the most recent example.

I heard this morning that Denver would LOVE to ship his ass back to Gatorville and Jacksonville would pony up for a trade.

As long as he doesn't come to Miami. I'm dead serious when I say if the Dolphins trade for him, I will change my favorite team. That's how much I hate him as a QB and it would be obvious that management has ZERO idea what it's doing and it would be hopeless. Quote me on that for eternity.

I believe they should be able to fix it -- I don't think they would bother with bringing Manning for a visit if they couldn't sign him. They probably have a plan in place already.

And now according to Chris Mortensen, Manning is meeting with the Miami and Tennessee head coaches. The plot thickens, LOL. Ugh.

 He ain't coming to Miami. I think they would sign LeBron at QB before Tebow.

It only thickens that he's visiting Tennessee and because he played college ball there I think he feels impelled to go there.

I hope he DOESN'T sign with Miami. I'm still bothered by his 4 neck surgeries and NO ONE is asking him to throw. That's B-A-D.

I'd love to see him go to Tennessee. It would be a great way for him to stick it a little to the Colts as well by going to a division rival.

If anyone cares about this from a Denver perspective, Darren McKee @dmac1043 is all over it on Twitter.

Manning said it's not about the money, it's about winning. And he's going to choose the most lucrative contract, which will be a fraction of what he earned on his last contract?

Yeah it's stupid to sign him without having him throw. Maybe it's a pride thing, like a big star having to audition for a role, but given his age and injury history, it has to be required.

Dolphins can bide their time. Their defense is young and so is there OL, right? Brady is going to play 3-4 more years at most? Jets just doomed themselves to mediocrity by extending Sanchez and the Bills also overpaid for the QB. So they shouldn't overpay for a QB this year, though I think Flynn may be worth risking a contract similar to Colb's as long as they don't have to trade any assets to sign him.

They are 15-20 mil under the cap, so they don't have to trade anything to sign him. And at this point, I think Flynn is a better gamble just because of his familiarity with Philbin, than Manning is. Like you said...their team is quite young overall, so they don't have to win THIS year. Tho us fans are getting sick of mediocrity.

Disagree that it's not requiring a Star to audition, it's more to do with a teams need and moreso that desperation meter going full tilt. In today's NFL you can go from a crap team to a playoff contender in 1 year. SF 49'ers?

I agree about the Dolphins biding time. Matt Moore did a real nice job for the Dolphins and should be given the chance to go into training camp as the starter. Lets see what he can do in year 2 as the starter? I think he showed me more than Matt Flynn in the second game where he lit it up.

I couldn't justify paying a guy like that a ton of money only to find out you paid for another Ryan Fitzpatrick.

When pursuing Peyton Manning it's probably not a good thing to waive your starting left tackle. Here's looking at you Cards. I know, you had to to get under the cap.

The fact that he sucks may have had something to do with it. That also may have been a precursor to Manning signing there. Like he refused to go there if Levi Brown was his Left Tackle.

the entire O-line sucks.

If PM doesn't make his decision before FA kicks off tomorrow afternoon I think the signing of Jeff Saturday is the tell. Where he goes, Manning will almost certainly sign (if it's one of the teams in play of course).

I guess deep down I was hoping Miami would trade up and get RG III. From as best as I can tell (lets face it, Upstate NY isnt the easiest place to get Miami news) they didnt make a serious attempt to do that at all. Seems like they were always going to settle for Flynn or hope they could get lucky with Manning. The Manning situation isnt perfect though. And the front office still sux. Seems wierd to me that Miami isnt going to visit Miami, I know he's been there but still.

Tony

And lets never again mention Tebow to Miami. If I was a season ticket holder I would have barfed when they honored Tebows Florida team when Denver came to Miami last season. What a joke.
