I did the whole fat xbox repair job a few years ago....lasted for about 2 years then it red ringed again. You might want to save yourself the trouble and just get a Slim! Have had no issues with it.

Ummm NO ! :)

You need to get the heatsink off and clean the heatsink and replace the paste but that's not what's causing the RROD. Because the CPU and primarily the GPU got so hot they partially lifted off the motherboard so basically the GPU is not working. The reason the towel trick works is because the 360 gets so hot it temporarily remelts the solder and your GPU starts working again.

What you need to do is get a heat gun and carefully heat the CPU and GPU to remelt the solder. Be advised you need to remove all traces of the thermal paste off of the CPU and GPU on the mobo or you'll make a mess and possibly create more problems.

Take a look at the hundreds of Youtube videos on how to do it. The other thing you'll need to get is the X-Clamp repair kit so after you remelt the solder you force the CPU and GPU more snugly on the motherboard. Again look that up on Youtube, it's pretty easy. You can clean the motherboard, GPU and CPU as well as the heatsink with alcohol but the job is much much easier if you use the Arctic cleaner and prep liquids. I aslo used Arctic Ceramique because it's non conducting unlike Arctic Silver.

Yeah no problem with the questions. :)

Yup you need to take out the motherboard. Then you need to undo both X-Clamps on the back of the mobo. Once you see it it's pretty easy to take them out. If you notice they are basically hooked to the post on each corner. Notice the groove on the post where they are hooked? A small thin tool will get in between that and you can unhook them from the 4 post.

At that point the heatsink falls off when you undo the last one. Clean the heatsink, then the surface of the CPU and GPU thoroughly. Next take a heat gun and put it on HIGH. I believe the videos say to keep the gun at 12 inches away from the mobo. Next constantly move gun back and forth DO NOT STOP at one spot or it FUBARRED. Check the videos for how long you should do that for? I want to say 1-3 minutes but make sure first.

You'll do that to both the CPU and GPU. Let the mobo cool down for around 30 minutes. Apply the thermal paste on both chips. It doesn't take a lot of paste for those chips like the size of a bead of rice.

Hehehe, Rodster, you sure you don't work for al qudea or something?

Well my 360 is starting to circle the drain. The drive doesn't always recognize the disks any longer. Its a launch model--likely a refurb from when my original got the old RROD.

Thinking of getting the slim or whatever its called now.

Question about loading games to the hard drive.

We all now that the value of sports games declines rapidly right before the new version comes out. Am I correct in assuming that if I get the new XBOX, I could per se load nba2k to the hard drive and then sell my copy? Thus maximizing resale, or am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance.

Negative or we'd be all doing it. If you install the game to the hard drive the system does a disc check before the game starts. If there is no disc in the tray you will be notified to insert the disc.

So in other words no disc = no playtime.

Seemed too simple!

Can't play NHL 14 on the Xbone, so I'll be looking for another 360.

Sorry to hear that, Vader. Was it a Slim, or a prior gen, just curious?

Older style arcade unit from 2008. 3 out of the 4 times I've gotten the red rings EA's NHL game disc has been in the box!

I've been one of the lucky ones who've only lost two over the 360's lifespan. Damned if I can remember what I was doing either time, though.

Been damn stable with the slim, though, and the aesthetic will suit your Gamertag a lot better 8)

The funny thing is once I got to replacement number 6 *knock on wood* it has lasted even though it sounds like a space shuttle launch. It is so old it doesn't even have HDMI! It also takes about 30 seconds to shut off after hitting the power button.

Kept red ringing last night and couldn't get it to work so I just tried it this afternoon one more time before heading out to pick up another and now it is working fine. :? Hopefully it doesn't die on an Ice Dragon night.

As far as I remember it, Im in the same club. It is a pretty sad statement about MS and their quality control that we consider it lucky to only have two 360s die.

I hear that. That would be a true gaming tragedy!

Seriously, Heres hoping it lasts til your next gen console.

While its working you may want to consider trading it at Gamestop since they are offering double credit on consoles until 8/18.

Thanks.. prob a better deal than I got if I needed a Kinect... My son loves playing the Adventures but now that is no more since my last Xbox ruined it.... partly my fault.

Saturday morning I ended up going to Walmart and for $250 I got the 250G xbox with Halo 4, Tomb Raider.. and a $50 Walmart gift card... So essentially I got it for $199 since the gift card will come in handy for Christmas presents for the kidos.

I might eventually get the 4G one I have now fixed... but essentially paying $120 more for a new Xbox, extra controller and bigger HD, seemed like the better deal.
