Nice, Spooky. I still think Ashlee Simpson is the standard for bad SNL performances.

I was digging around looking for other bad/infamous ones, and found (finally) both songs from the Replacements infamous 1986 appearance. Can't think of another instance where a band completely blew up its chance at superstardom and cemented its fan base at the same time.

MC Hammer performing "The Adam's Family" instantly comes to mind. Never saw that Replacements video before, but I thought it was great!

Forgot about Hammer. That's the funny thing about all these Lana Del Rey "worst ever" posts. She was bad, no question, but there have been some serious musical abortions on the show over the years.

And The Replacements were 100% themselves in those clips. I love them too.

Also, in musical matters not related to LDL, those of you looking for something heavy that won't fit on SNL should check out Empros by Russian Circles. Scoop has mentioned them before. They are instrumental metal that balance a very heavy sound with a lot of texture to give their songs a big, epic feeling. If you like the first song "309" you'll love the rest:

Chicago's own Russian Circles. I cannot recommend them enough. Glad to see somebody else who digs them.

I can't stop listening to Skylar Grey right now. That may be looked down in this forum, but I want to screw her voice.

The new First Aid Kit album comes out Tuesday. You can listen to the full album at NPR - http://www.npr.org/2012/01/15/144966888 ... lions-roar

Their sound is similar to previous work - a folksy, acoustic guitar driven jangle pop with great harmonizing vocals. If you haven't heard them, they draw comparisons to Fleet Foxes.

I never heard of them before but if you are a fan of theatrical rock-n-roll ala Queen you owe it to yourself to check out Foxy Shazam's new album "The Church of Rock and Roll" which is available on Spotify now. Seriously, really good stuff.

The first time I heard "2112" was at a keg party when I was a senior in high school. The album was unlike anything I'd ever heard. Blew me away.

Thought maybe the beer altered my perception, so I listened to the record sober. Dug the hell out of it again and still do today. :)

What I love about "2112" is that it still sounds pretty blistering even today. It has such a ferocious complexity. The concept is too much for a lot of people, but by concept album standards, it's very dark and dramatic.

Was able to get a hold of the new Van Halen.

One listen in and I'm ready to declare it a success. Is it derivative - yes, to some extent. Is it the best thing they've ever done - no. Is it more than a cash in/phoned in "reunion" album - yes, I really think it's much more than that.

My hats off to these guys on this one. I don't think it's going to be something I'll crank a ton, but my hope for it was definitely met. I just wanted to have it feel like it was more than some disjointed, uninspired effort and I really think it is. It's a real VH album worthy of their name. And I think, like the Tattoo song, it will continue to grow on me even more.

Funny thing too is that pretty much any other first single from the album besides 'Tattoo' would have gotten people a lot more excited/optimistic. Maybe that was some sort of weird marketing angle. Give people a song that would have mixed reviews and then know that it only gets better from there. Rather than the opposite and letting people down?

'As Is', 'Honeybaby...' and 'Trouble With Never' are the real deal.

Spooky is right: The new Van Halen album is surprisingly good. Lean and pretty mean, reminiscent of the early VH albums, if not as dangerous.

I think "Tattoo" was a lame choice as the first single and might deter a lot of people from checking out this album. It's one of the weakest tracks on the album, a poor mish-mash between the "I/II" and "Panama" eras of VH. The rest of the album rocks pretty hard and pretty good.

This record is a pleasant surprise. I never would have checked it out based on "Tattoo." But I'm glad I gave the entire album a shot after reading Spooky's review.

Right!?!? I'm glad it is striking you the same way it is for me and my friends (and they are some serious VH, but critical nuts). These are some downright rip-roaring rock tunes. And just as I thought, it's continued to grow on me. I was reading a sh*t ton of bad reviews on iTunes (mixed in with as many glowing ones) and I just don't get how people can say this is horrible. I do understand that DLR is sounding old but seriously - it's not like he sounds completely different or his style isn't the same. But for f*cks sake - as a straight up hard rock album this is as good (if not better) as most other things in the same genre within the last 10 years.

Two more songs that I have decided are the shiz - 'Outer Space' and 'Big River'. Love the 'Big River' chorus - reminds me of a heavy Doobie Brothers. And I can't get 'The Trouble with Never' out of my head!

The album just screams "play it out loud' for me. With the exception of 'Stay Frosty', the songs have this heaviness and fizzle in the them just reminiscent of the earlier VH albums. I am digging 'You and your Blues' my favorite song of the album and 'Beats workin' is pretty good too.

YES! It is absolutely imperative that NO ONE pass judgement on this album until it has been played as loud as possible via whatever real stereo system or good car stereo you have. Then come back and tell me it doesn't rip.

The VH album is on spotify (fyi). After all the Eddie horror stories of the last decade, it's amazing they pulled this thing off. I'm not saying I like it (not my thing), but I am impressed it's not some coked-out (red wine'd-out) trainwreck. And yes, every song is better than Tattoo.

It's also on MOG, for those who prefer higher audio quality. :P

OK, I'll remove my d*uchebag hat now. :)

What is mog? I looked at their web page, but it wasn't clear how it works. Anyway, when it some checking out new stuff I'd prob never listen to otherwise (like VH), I don't need FLAC or anything to tell if it sucks or not.
