That theory will soon be tested, considering she's on this Saturday when Daniel Radcliffe hosts.greggsand wrote:Not sure what to make of Lana Del Rey yet. It's interesting the indie-community has latched on to her (only Tyler the Creator's embrace by the the indie community is more head-scratching in 2011), but she is also getting hit with whole "manufactured star" tag. I imagine the indie crowd will bail on her sooner than later (probably right around the time she lands a SNL performance).

I seem to be the only one on the internet digging the new VH tune. I think it is a solid (not amazing, but solid) down and dirty rock song. Lyrics are kinda weak, but most rocks songs are not known for their incredible poetry. Anyway, seems like my claims of saying it sounds like it could be on an old VH record may have more weight now...

Re: OT: New Music?
That VH song isn't terrible, I guess. That video they released, though, makes me feel bad in oh so many ways. Not sure why they would ape the onstage hijinks style of yesteryear when it just beats you over the head with the sadness of aging (not to mention the cheap video shutter speed effects and Wolfgang not really knowing what to do with himself, God bless him).
More importantly, no Michael Anthony? He's just a few paces behind Michael McDonald in the "most distinctive backups" category.

Re: OT: New Music?
Ya know Slumber....you've made me wonder if the video is actually hurting peoples perception of the song. Because it is awkward.

I thought the "new" album is nothing but old out takes re-recorded. And yes, that video doesnt help. I had 3 people email it to me with "check this out" (not in a good way).Spooky wrote:I seem to be the only one on the internet digging the new VH tune. So my buddy and I have a little "garage band" thing going for fun. We call ourselves 'Music For Amateurs'. Me on guitar and my buddy Dan on drums. Here is a tune we are currently working on called, you guessed it, 'Big Disco'.
(NOTE: This version is all me done in one take with no overdubs or edits. All accomplished with my guitar, multi effect pedal and a loop pedal)

Very cool, Spook. I really like the tone of the guitar and it's a cool riff.

Mega, Spook! Mixes a very cool rock riff with a funky, sludgy rhythm. One of the guitar tracks almost sounds like Frampton's voicebox on "Do You Feel (Like I Feel)?"

So what's the verdict? For me, she couldn't seem any more detached from what was going on. Very odd. Maybe she was really intimidated or something. I was hoping for either an A+ or a F, got neither.Slumberland wrote:That theory will soon be tested, considering she's on this Saturday when Daniel Radcliffe hosts.greggsand wrote:Not sure what to make of Lana Del Rey yet. Re: OT: New Music?
Man, she seemed REALLY nervous. It was super awkward, and I can't help but think they could have made better presentational decisions to get across that intimate, confessional vibe she has in those videos... I don't know, let her sit down, do some rear projections perhaps... anything other than her standing there like a female Oscar trophy when it's clear she needs a ton more seasoning when it comes to performing live. It doesn't take away from how brilliant that song is, though.
I thought the second song went a tick better than the first. No matter what I bet she's kicking herself.
Those lips are fake, right?

AWFUL performance. The detachment and weird hand gestures wouldn't have been a big deal if it sounded like she could sing. Makes me wonder how much help she gets in the studio.greggsand wrote:So what's the verdict? For me, she couldn't seem any more detached from what was going on. Very odd. It also made me think of this:
Bart: What just happened?
Krusty: Oh don't worry about that. You're just finished, that's all.

As long as she's really writing the stuff, I'm not going to write her off. Plenty of shaky singers with fine careers. She'll figure out how to inject some personality into the stage show (or someone will do it for her). But yeah, it was probably too soon and really unwisely staged, I think.

Yeah, the strength of "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans" certainly makes me interested to hear more from her. Just a shame to see her falter so badly on a national stage like that. I think in today's music business you have to be able to perform -- talent is sadly secondary to spectacle, and the decline in sales makes it hard for most artists to make it on recording alone (Adele being an obvious exception).Slumberland wrote:As long as she's really writing the stuff, I'm not going to write her off. Re: OT: New Music?
The difference between Adele and Lana Del Rey is pure talent. You could strip all the packaging away and hype away from Adele, and her talent would still dominate any conversation about her. Remove the varnish from LDR, and you've got a piece of knotty wood.
I know it's cliched, but the fact LDR failed as a mainstream artist using her real name, Lizzy Grant, and is being packaged for a next act as a collagen-enhanced second coming of Nancy Sinatra unsettles me a bit. And I'm really surprised that a healthy chunk of the indie music press and crowd is buying it, when a rejection of crass commercialism seems to be a mandatory requirement for indie cred.
Seriously, the Foo Fighters are pop sellouts in the eyes of Pitchfork, yet LDR tries to morph from pop folkie to indie chanteuse and Pitchfork drools over it?
I'm not convinced -- or buying. The SNL performance didn't help. She was terrible.

As a card carrying member of the indie-snob community, I was also puzzled by the 'Pitchforks of the world' getting on board with LDR, but hey, sometimes music nerds just fall for hot chicks. I see the LDR experiment ending badly as the indie crowd loves nothing more than 'step 'em up & knock 'em down'.pk500 wrote:The difference between Adele and Lana Del Rey is pure talent.
