won't help the TV ratings that the game is no long on free TV and the teams are in the same conference.

Couldn't agree more. I have been tuned out of college football since Thanksgiving weekend. I have maybe watched an hour total of all the bowl games combined.sportdan30 wrote:I can't remember being less interested in a BCS title game in a long long time. Don't get me wrong, I'll still watch the game
tonight, but it pales in comparison to a Final Four and NFL playoffs. Playoffs are desperately needed once and for all!
I don't know who is making money on these games, as all I see are bad matchups which don't attract tv audience, and half (if not more) empty stadiums. Not to mention, aren't we on the 4th week of bowl week? Do we need to wait until January 9 for this game?

ESPN owns seven non-BCS bowl games, and the broadcast rights for the BCS through 2014. That combination helps "The Worldwide Leader" generate profit on ad sales. It still earns money on bullsh*t bowls that it owns and no one watches because sponsorship and ad revenue goes directly to Bristol once the participating schools are paid. And the BCS games still attract strong advertising support for some reason, even though ESPN must share the riches with bowl owners, committees and participating schools.
It sounds ironic, but ESPN probably wants to keep the status quo of the bowl system and BCS as much as bowl host committees and BCS executives. More money will flow into Bristol with the current system than through a playoff, which would command MUCH higher TV rights fees that might not be offset by advertising revenues.

So basically we need companies to stop thinking that a great advertising opportunity is to buy spots on 6-6 Illinois vs. 6-7 UCLA.pk500 wrote:ESPN.icvu42 wrote:I don't know who is making money on these games, as all I see are bad matchups which don't attract tv audience, and half (if not more) empty stadiums. You know what else annoys me about these bowls, is the stupid corporate names. Can we bring back the Tangerine Bowl, Peach bowl, Hula Bowl? That would get me a little more excited than the GoDaddy.com bowl.

Re: NCAA Season 2011
ESPN bought these bowls because December is a dead time for its sports properties, and the network needs programming. College hoops teams still are engorging on a steady diet of cupcakes before conference play, the NBA is early in the season, and baseball, golf and motorsports are over.
So instead of flooding its channels with endless reruns of World Series of Poker and Syracuse vs. Colgate in college hoops, ESPN bought bowls and is trying to sell those games to us as worthwhile, meaningful programming.
Thankfully most sports fans aren't that naive.
A return to sponsor-devoid bowl games NEVER will happen. If a company is willing to pay, a game will take the money. That's Sports Marketing/Sports Management 101.
Hell, the Brickyard 400 this year will be known as the Crown Royal Presents The "Your Hero's Name Here" 400 at the Brickyard, an abominable name that makes me queasy. But that sponsorship money from Diageo helps to keep me employed by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, so I'll gnash my teeth quietly and embrace the new race name.

plus, the bowl teams have to buy X number of tickets, so the bowl covers itself there. If the school can't sell them, they have to eat the cost.

Really ESPN. You couldnt find a live person to do the game?
Re: NCAA Season 2011
This is the first NCAA game I've watched all year and you're telling me LSU is the #1 team coming in? I 'm amazed they've won 1 game this yea (how they win 12!?!?) I think this is the worst QB I've seen in a very long time.
If there was a playoff system LSU would have been one and done early.
btw.....if i didnt accidentally catch this game, I would have never known it was on tonight. Why isn't this game on ABC?

I haven't watched a football game, NFL or college, in real time in ages. They go straight to dvr. I'll thankfully watch a game in 30-40 minutes than waste 3 or more hours. I saw some of the game tonight, but I caught up on the dvr, so I'll check out the not-so-thrilling conclusion at breakfast. The Cajuns at my office aren't going to be too happy tomorrow.MizzouRah wrote:I'm bored to death and need to find something else to watch.

Ya if they played Bama in the first round. You do realize that Bama was the number 1 defense in the nation this year ? Other teams did play LSU and only one came close. They are just finishing an unfinished job.Lancer wrote:

Dear BCS,
Thanks for reminding me why college football sucks. I'll stick with college hoops and the NFL.
Thanks
Dan
P.S. - Also a second thank you for making me switch on Monday Night Raw for the first time in years and learning that fake wrestling has a hall of fame and apparently is getting their own network who knew?

God, some of you really must suffer from hemorrhoids and ADD. Sour pusses...wow. I want a playoff as much as the next guy, but that was one heckuva dominant defensive performance by Alabama...and I'm a die hard Auburn fan. If you thought it was boring, then you are likely from a conference that HAS no defense, and just trades touchdowns...lol.
There's not a team in the country that could've overcome that stifling defensive performance tonight...not one.

Oklahoma State begs to differ. Too bad it's not college basketball, where these debates are answered on the court.Teal wrote:God, some of you really must suffer from hemorrhoids and ADD. But hey, just 7 1/2 more months until we begin another odyssey toward meaningless exhibition games known as bowls and a championship game picked by computers, and coaches and media who don't even watch all the games. I'm erect with anticipation.
At least the real football season can resume this weekend. Thank God.

Re: NCAA Season 2011
Only in college football would we not have a playoff, but have two teams from the same conference playing in a championship game. Think about things like the Yankees playing the Red Sox in the World Series, the Pats and Dolphins playing in the Super Bowl, and you'll see how idiotic this system is. At least if it happens in college basketball, it's by achievement rather than voting.
It's also not just about the BCS. The Illinois-UCLA example is perfect as well. The benchmark of six wins to be bowl eligible guarantees a sea of mediocre college football in December.
College football is a great sport stuck in a terrible arranged marriage.

Re: NCAA Season 2011
Exactly and that is why college football will always be meaningless to me. I don't have a dog in the hunt and I love a defense game. The game was boring because that essentially made the teams 1-1 and just because one win was more dominant then the other they are now national champs?pk500 wrote: Oklahoma State begs to differ. 'Bama and LSU are 1-1 against each other this season, with LSU winning in Tuscaloosa and 'Bama on a neutral field. 'Bama didn't win its conference title; LSU won the SEC. LSU beat three of the five eventual BCS bowl winners this season.
Yet 'Bama is the definitive, undisputed national champion because it won the game the computers, polls and coaches -- who have their A/V coordinator or interns complete and send their poll ballots -- said was the only one that's important?
As Brando said in his fine analogy, it's pretty sad that such a great sport is insulted by such a ridiculous system.
Roll Tide? Try Roll NFL. College football ALWAYS will be the junior varsity due to its neutered, meaningless postseason.

Re: NCAA Season 2011
Well aparently the powers that be will be meeting to discuss the BCS and make changes. Hopefully they will come to their senes and give us at elast a 4 team playoff. Because as we all know, that will eventually turn into 8 and then 16 teams once they realize what a cash cow a playoff would be.
The thing that really gets me is when they say a playoff would make the regular season meaningless? Hell there are 68 teams in the basketball tourney, and I don't see anyone claiming the hoops season is meaningless. Heck it creates for some great non-conference matchups as teams look to boost their RPI. Have a 16 team playoff and give the higher seeds home games for the first two rounds, and the regular season will not lose any value.

Re: NCAA Season 2011
Exactly. If they can do it in the FCS, why can't they do it in the FBS? I also like the idea of doing a 10- or 12-team playoff with the top 2-4 teams getting byes, which would reward teams that had great seasons. They could also make it that the champions of the big 5 conferences all get automatic playoff berths, with the rest being at-large based on polls. Some teams would certainly b*tch about being left out, but with an 8-16 team format, all the potential contenders would always be included.icvu42 wrote:Well aparently the powers that be will be meeting to discuss the BCS and make changes. It'll never happen, though.

Or because the NFL is just a better game.
I don't know if the ratings are higher but it seems despite the contract disputes (or maybe because of), NFL is even more popular this year.
One thing they'd have to sort out if they do have an extended playoff system is to avoid scheduling conflicts with late season NFL games when teams are fighting for playoffs or NFL playoffs games -- first two rounds are played on both Saturdays and Sundays, so college playoff games on the same weekend could be hurt ratings-wise.
