Splinter Cell: Conviction impressions

Post by Teal »

Jack Bauer is having a very bad day.

I mean, Sam Fisher is having a very bad day. And, as a result, I'm having a very good time!

What a risk. And, so far, what a payoff. I love this game! I love what they've done to Fisher, making him a rogue, pissing him off, removing his restraints. This is Splinter Cell, the Action Movie. As the opening line indicates, this is as much Jack Bauer as it is Sam Fisher now, and it's really good. So far, the SP has been fantastic. Light and shadow are masterfully represented with color, and black and white. If in the light, the world is shown in all its hues. Go to shadow, and everything grayscales. No wondering if you're in the shadows or not.

The AI is tougher, as well. They will know your last position, so when you're little shadow avatar shows up right where you currently are, it's time to get the hell outta there, because that's right where they think you are. It's a great way to flank and confuse the enemy, and really makes you feel like the badass you are.

The story has been very good thus far, already with a couple of neat twists, even early on. I'm liking what I'm seeing.

The MP has been reduced to 2 man co-op sessions, and 1v1 adversarial. Can't say anything about adversarial at the moment, but Mix and I played the first mission of the co-op story mode, and outside of Mix insisting on using the Battlefield control scheme (don't try it, it doesn't work well!), we had a blast. The controls do take a bit of getting used to, as they are quite different from any other game of this type that I've played, but after a few minutes, it's no longer an issue, at least for me.

There's also a version of 'terrorist hunt' mode from R6V, where the map is littered with randomly placed baddies, which you must dispatch. They are not nearly as stupid as R6's baddies, and they will kill you pretty quickly if you don't play smart. This mode can be done solo or co-op with another player.

So far, I'm very, very pleased with what I've played, and can't wait to throw it in the machine again... :D

It's a fun game, but it's just NOT Splinter Cell to me. Ubisoft should have changed the name to something else, because this just isn't Splinter Cell. It's a great action game for sure, but it's nothing like the previous games. It's as drastic of a change as a Metal Gear Solid game with no cutscene videos would be. I like it, but I still don't think it can top the classics like Chaos Theory. Short game, too. I read only 5-6 hours? For someone like me who doesn't play online, this game is a RENTAL.

It's been a crazy week with jury duty but I finally have copy in hand and don't have to be to court until 11:00 tomorrow. I can't wait to play as I really liked the demo. Glad to see I'm not the only one who appreciates the changes made.

Played some more co-op last night with mixer. Damn, but it's fun! A couple of times last night, I tried to stealth kill a guy, only to have him beat me to the punch, grab me, and put a gun to my head. There's a prompt to distract the guy, I press it, stomp his foot, his head moves...and then mix blew it off for him.

Love it, love it, love it!

Can anyone comment on the quality of the story or the compelling 'flow' of the action? I've had way too many games that sit in my library and never get finished, while Heavy Rain and Modern Warfare both rolled to the credits. I will buy this game if I believe I'll finish it...thoughts?

I love it. The pace is overall much faster than previous SC's, but not so much that you can't still see ol' SC in there. The co op is superb, and neither are overly long, from what I've read. But there's alot to keep you coming back.

I agree. Although the interrogation scenes get a tad old towards then end. Wish they'd mixed things up a bit. The game overall goes pretty quick though so I think you'll probably finish it in a week with moderate playtime (around 1-2 hours every other night).

Just finished the story. :D Love it! Opened up "infiltration mode" which will come as a great addition to those who dislike the new Sam. It's Hunter mode, but if you're seen, you're done. Sneaky, sneaky!

Well I do the same thing a lot, but my son finished it Friday and he came to me and told me that whatever I do I should not let this game be one of those titles that I get halfway through and then don't finish it. He said it was absolutely stellar.

Then I had a friend tell me Saturday that Conviction's multiplayer was some of the most satisfying and fun multiplayer he had ever played and coming from this dude that's pretty high marks.

Whoever said this isn't Splinter Cell is wrong. You still have your stealth and you still have your gadgets, but they finally gave you the option to play the game without having to stay completely stealth all the time, something they should have done a long time ago. I actually quit Double Agent halfway through because I got tired of ALWAYS having to stealth everywhere. This game is a very nice change of pace, but if you're a Splinter Cell purist, then you can still play the game the way you used to.

The short length of the story makes it seem like a perfect rental. I hope to try it out soon myself.

This cracks me up, though, especially the goon on the right who must be a DSP reader...

I'm going to be the wierdo that disagrees with the general consensus but I was pretty disappointed with this game after finishing the single player.

Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a good game but not I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Chaos Theory or Pandora Tomorrow. I totally acknowledge what Badgun and others have said about the stealth - you can still stealth (used as a verb) around some levels but the levels aren't nearly as open as those in previous games and there aren't nearly as many different ways to sneak around.

Once you get to the last 3rd of the game (especially that last level) you're pretty much forced to forgo the stealth and go to straight-up shooting. And for me, the gunplay isn't nearly as good as that in other top tier 3rd person shooters.

The previous SC games were very methodical in their pacing, you had to really take your time, hide in the shadows and remain undetected. There were also a number of different ways to get through levels - sneak around, through, under, grab a guard and make him use a retinal scanner, zipline across a roof, etc. Not everyone's cup of tea but I loved it because you felt like an absolute bad-ass Ninja.

This game still makes you feel like a bad-ass but as Teal alluded to - more like Jack Bauer than Sam Fisher. They should take this engine and make a 24 or Bourne game.

Haha, I still have Double Agent too. The limited collector's edition with the transparent hard plastic red cover. That game isn't going anywhere!

Is the consensus that Double Agent is the best Splinter Cell game of this generation?

No. Double agent is a convoluted mess, in my opinion. There's some of the old SC in there, but the 'double agent' crap got old, quick. I preferred Conviction. If you want the best in the series, though, it's Chaos Theory, hands down.

On the MP side, Double Agent had better competitive MP, though...

The best Splinter Cell of this generation is Deus Ex Human Revolution. LOL...seriously, it's very similar to Splinter Cell of old. Which is awesome BTW.

I think the MP in Double Agent is brilliant. Frustrating as all hell sometimes, but brilliant. Maybe my favorite online MP game this generation. But I've wanted to throw my controller at times because of it too.

I never even touched the single player.

Dammit. My %#$&$# Conviction disc isn't readable on my 360. There's a really small crack on the inside part of the disc that I hadn't seen before until last night. So I'll have to get another copy. This is way too good a game not to have. Plus I have unfinished business to take care of in many of the superb Deniable Ops modes -- Co-Op & Last Stand in particular. Anyway, it may be a week or so before my new copy gets here.

Fortunately my Double Agent disc works fine. I popped it in and had to do a couple missions to get adjusted to the controls again as I barely touched any multiplayer modes on the first go-around. Played through the simple Jaguar and Panther solo missions and instantly fell in love with the game again. Spooky, get ready! You're on call now, buddy!

Double Agent is a so-so game, but it's no match for Chaos Theory. As a SC whore, I rank them like this:

1. Chaos Theory - No surprise here, since this is considered the best SC game by nearly every hardcore fan. It also helps that this title is backwards compatible on 360, so you can probably find it used for $3 on Amazon.

2. Conviction - It's not really Splinter Cell in execution, but it's a fun game that looks awesome. Stealth in this game is about as important as using the brakes in a Need for Speed game, but it works.

3. Pandora Tomorrow - Classic XBOX gaming that stays true to the stealth aspect

4. Splinter Cell 1 - Showing it's age big time, but still fun for the memories. CIA Headquarters is one of the best SC missions ever

5. Double Agent - Aside from a few levels, this game was a huge drag.
