My Rock Band downloads alone are going to keep me chained to the 360!Sport73 wrote:True. I would have been happier if myself and the rest of the community who've had their 360's die could have just walked away and thumbed a big FU to Microsoft. Two things keep that from happening:pk500 wrote:You cats are gluttons for punishment.
1. Give them the razor, sell the blades. Consoles are the razor and the games are the blades. I have enough money tied up in games, accessories, and add-on/content for my 360 that letting it stay dead is far more punishment to me that to MS.
2. Live. Enough said. MS got the online ecosystem so right that the PS3, Onlive and other options just aren't satisfying.
And you can probably add Kinect to that list.
Now let's see what happens in 2 years when the next round of consoles arrive.

I went with a different cooling designed that massively dropped the temp. Take a look. I moved the fan which used to be on top of the fan shroud, wasn't need on that one. It's needed more on the GPU heatsink which sits underneath the disk drive. So I put the fan behind it blowing air underneath the drive towards the GPU heatsink. I noticed a big change in the temps.

The greatest irony in the world would be Rod's house burning down because of all the work he does to keep the 360 cool.
Re: Another Dead X360
LOL
Alright so now I have a forced update. They better not ban my console for the shitty job they did or i'm on the phone with MS.

Rodster - where can I get these things? Like getting the black cover for the XB. I'd love to start a mini project like that.
Now if I change the XB to Black, does it break the warranty or whatever they have?
I want to start w/ that, making it white to black, where do I get the stuff?

Re: Another Dead X360
You can have my black cover and case if you want, I just bought the carbon faceplate. Yes once you crack open the unit you are S.O.L. if you have problems. But once you crack it open they aren't hard to fix. And better cooling makes them last a long time.Lancer wrote:Rodster - where can I get these things? Like getting the black cover for the XB. Re: Another Dead X360
Thankfully, my Xbox is not dead, but tonight it's been having an issue that I'm curious if anyone has ever experienced.
The tray is ejecting and turning the system on. This is after obviously the system has been shut down. It's happened a couple times tonight. I'll hear the "bing" sound and the tray will eject.
I also noticed when I was downloading some demos tonight, that the system would bing, but the tray didn't eject at that time. This is the 4GB slim model with which I put a larger hard drive on.
Any suggestions?

Re: Another Dead X360
All 360's automatically turn on i.e. awake out of standby if you eject the disc. Why it's doing it is another matter, don't know why.

Now the 360 rebooted back to the main screen while I was enjoying a NBA 2K12 game. I've about had it with MS. This is ridiculous. The system is less than five months old.

Really unusual issues. Have you called MS support on the problems you listed or are you just venting?sportdan30 wrote:Now the 360 rebooted back to the main screen while I was enjoying a NBA 2K12 game. I've about had it with MS. This is ridiculous. The system is less than five months old.

Venting right now. Will call MS this evening. Can Best Buy do anything seeing that it was bought from their, however I purchased it from someone who bought a laptop and got the Xbox included.
Re: Another Dead X360
I would go with MS first and not sure how long the warranty is, but lie on the phone when they ask you and say it's only 29 days old. They'll probably fix it or send you refurbed one - all for free.
If you know your guy who you bought it from and he still has a receipt, maybe you can ask him to send it back to Best buy for you and see what they can do.
added - btw if you go thru MS, tell them your experience with past XB's , maybe they'll give you some perks.

...or if you have a pretty shitty conscience buy a new and return the old one. I don't think they scan the serial number anymore.Lancer wrote:I would go with MS first and not sure how long the warranty is, but lie on the phone when they ask you and say it's only 29 days old. Re: Another Dead X360
I usually am pretty conscience about these things but eff microsoft my replacement for my original just red ringed so of course its not covered by now as the refurbished one they send is only covered for 90 days so if your replacement arrives on the last day of your warranty the shitty replacement only has to last 90 days and your paying for the repair even if the replacement is a brand new unit.Rodster wrote:...or if you have a pretty shitty conscience buy a new and return the old one. A little miffed right now so may have to do the return thing but knowing my luck they would know im returing a different one than i bought.
Can i get 3 red rings fixed cheaper than 99 bucks?

Re: Another Dead X360
there are some ways to fix them yourself. Just youtube Xbox Red Ring Fix and you'll find some things.
I did the towel trick on my old XB that red ringed and it actually worked. But the trick is temporary, where my XB lasted only 2 weeks and RROD again. I did the towel trick a second time and again worked 2 weeks before RROD.
I know there was another way you can open up the system and add pennies (the penny trick) to certain areas that fixes the thing easy. But you got to be careful not to mess w/ the part of the machine that uses XBL or your system will be banned for online play.
Then there is another way - craigslist. I knew a guy who got his fixed for around 25 bucks from a guy who fixes XB's on craigslist.

Re: Another Dead X360
Jimmy if you need my help m8 let me know. I've taken apart my 360 several times to modify it for better cooling but not to repair the RROD. That's what I wanted to avoid but repairing the RROD is a fairly cheap process about $30 in materials at best including shipping.
If your interested I have a brand new Arcade 360 still in the box with the updated parts and cooler running CPU/GPU. It's never been used and it doesn't have a hard drive.

Re: Another Dead X360
Seems all you need to do to fix rrod is redo the thermal paste on the chips, im all over it if thats the case .
The only thing im not sure of yet is if i have to over heat it to reset the ring or do i just turn it on when im done, makes sense to overheat it if that is what resets the error code.
Anyone know the procedure after you clean and put new paste on.

Re: Another Dead X360
Ummm NO !Jimmydeicide wrote:Seems all you need to do to fix rrod is redo the thermal paste on the chips,

You need to get the heatsink off and clean the heatsink and replace the paste but that's not what's causing the RROD. Because the CPU and primarily the GPU got so hot they partially lifted off the motherboard so basically the GPU is not working. The reason the towel trick works is because the 360 gets so hot it temporarily remelts the solder and your GPU starts working again.
What you need to do is get a heat gun and carefully heat the CPU and GPU to remelt the solder. Be advised you need to remove all traces of the thermal paste off of the CPU and GPU on the mobo or you'll make a mess and possibly create more problems.
Take a look at the hundreds of Youtube videos on how to do it. The other thing you'll need to get is the X-Clamp repair kit so after you remelt the solder you force the CPU and GPU more snugly on the motherboard. Again look that up on Youtube, it's pretty easy. You can clean the motherboard, GPU and CPU as well as the heatsink with alcohol but the job is much much easier if you use the Arctic cleaner and prep liquids. I aslo used Arctic Ceramique because it's non conducting unlike Arctic Silver.

Im gonna go db on you here rod. In order to redo the paste i would have to remove the x clamp and heat sinks to get at it no?
None of the vids i saw so far mention melting the solder.

You're actually going rod on rod asking all the questions. Db provides answers...to a point, then points to www.google.com for further guidance.

Yeah no problem with the questions.Jimmydeicide wrote:Im gonna go db on you here rod. In order to redo the paste i would have to remove the x clamp and heat sinks to get at it no?

Yup you need to take out the motherboard. Then you need to undo both X-Clamps on the back of the mobo. Once you see it it's pretty easy to take them out. If you notice they are basically hooked to the post on each corner. Notice the groove on the post where they are hooked? A small thin tool will get in between that and you can unhook them from the 4 post.
At that point the heatsink falls off when you undo the last one. Clean the heatsink, then the surface of the CPU and GPU thoroughly. Next take a heat gun and put it on HIGH. I believe the videos say to keep the gun at 12 inches away from the mobo. Next constantly move gun back and forth DO NOT STOP at one spot or it FUBARRED. Check the videos for how long you should do that for? I want to say 1-3 minutes but make sure first.
You'll do that to both the CPU and GPU. Let the mobo cool down for around 30 minutes. Apply the thermal paste on both chips. It doesn't take a lot of paste for those chips like the size of a bead of rice.

It wasnt a real question it was sarcasm.
As i thought it was obvious in order to get to the chips you have to take a part the whole bloody thing.
