Sold my galaxy and just ordered the fire and a carrying case for it. Hopefully it comes in by next Friday when I start my nice two week vacation. :)

I bought 2 Kindle Fires. One for my ma and one for my mother-in-law. I hope they can figure them out.

They are pretty basic so it shouldn't be tough to figure out. My wife easily picked it up but she's pretty proficient in android so she probably isn't the greatest example.

So I gave in to my base desires and bought a Fire yesterday. I'll post a link to my full review soon, but my initial reaction (from an Apple zealout) is very positive.

The Kindle Fire is basically an aPad if you prefer the Amazon ecosystem, which I do.

That's a bit too generous. There's a lot more that can be done on an iPad than on the Fire. But, as a content consumption device focused on Amazon's ecosystem, it's great.

Quality review and I agree with most of it. The 7 inchers are def in their own category now. The part about the smoothness in android devices is especially true but the galaxy 7 plus w the xenos processor has done a ton to eliminate that advantage but then again its another 400 dollar device.

Got my Kindle fire today, so far I'm thinking this is what I should have bought in the first place due to the 7" screen.

Bought this carrying case too, fits snug as a bug.. love it.

Looks like Google wants to show Tablet makers how to properly design an Android Tablet.

Any of you guys with Galaxy Tab 10.1s use the HDMI Adaptor?

I got it for Christmas and have been messing with it on my 40 inch TV. It seems.... buggy.

But aside from the picture dropping out every so often, i also can't seem to get it to output in 1080p.

I know the homescreen isn't, but when i watch a youtube video that's "supposedly" 1080p. ,my TV is telling me it's only getting a 720p signal.......

Does the youtube app not put out 1080p? I will admit I haven't tried watching or renting an HD movie through the regular video player......

I see no reason why someone would wanna buy a Playbook for $200 when you can get a Kindle Fire for that same price.

Playbook comes with more memory than the Fire.

The OS is good except for the app. support, meaning it can manipulate a lot of multimedia simultaneously and switch back and forth.

Problem is though, the hardware is about a year old now and software is also lagging behind, even though they've promised a new OS in February with native email.

RIMM's viability is in question now, so if you get it, it may not get many software updates.

They must have manufactured a lot of these to be still selling them and now discounting them. Would be worth it if it drops to $99.

Fellas,

My son has $200 to spend and I suggested a Fire. I'm curious though about the apps. Does the Fire have full access to the Android marketplace? Any reason why this may not be a good fit for an eleven year old who loves his iPod touch but would like a little more?

It does NOT have access to the full Android market like a regular Android tablet would but it does have access to the Amazon Android Market which has a significantly amount of games and stuff like that. So it's probably enough for an 11 year old. You can always go on Amazon.com and check out the android app market there to see if it has enough of the stuff your son would like. Here's the link:

http://www.amazon.com/mobile-apps/b/ref ... 2350149011

You can always hack the device in the future if he wants a more full fledged Android tablet (with all of the native Google Apps like Gmail, Reader, Calendar, etc)...it's going to get easier and easier to do as time goes on, but it wasn't all that bad a few weeks ago when I did my wife's.

What kind of things does he like to do with the Touch? Read, browse, play games?

I think Fire is more oriented towards reading and browsing, though it has some games.

There are some complaints about the performance of the browser, which may get corrected with software updates.

Also be aware that it has 8 GB of data so if there are apps. or media which take up a lot of space, Fire might me limiting.

The 8GB storage is a non issue because every time you download something it links it to your Amazon account and is uploaded to their Cloud server. If you were to find yourself running low on space just delete stuff on the device. It's always there to download from their server.

Do you have to have Amazon Prime for the cloud storage?

Also, if you root the device, then the space becomes an issue.

No, it's included free. In fact Amazon made a big deal about that because the Tablet only had 8GB. I did get Prime because you can download free books, movies and TV shows as well as 2 day free shipping with no minimum purchase amount.

I had a $6 TV remote shipped in 2 days otherwise without Prime your order must be no less than $25 for shipping to be free.

I'm not DB but I have this case and like it a lot. You can find it for much cheaper if you look around. I got it for less than $40.
