Re: Skyrim
150 hours in Oblivion, so yeah, this is a no-brainer. It's my personal Holodeck.
Re: Skyrim
What races are you guys considering playing?
This will be my first venture into this universe - I'm thinking about either playing as a Breton who focuses exclusively on magic or a Wood Elf who sneaks around with the bow/arrow (you can tell I really like close combat).

Re: Skyrim
I almost always run as a Nord, and the fact that it's in the Nord province of Skyrim just makes it make more sense. I've ALWAYS loved games that had that Norse aspect to them. Something about playing games with the Viking fur-and-steel theme has always struck a chord with me. I still have Viking for just that reason.
Skyrim is the most anticipated game for me in history. Like Slumber, I was well over 100 hours into Oblivion (only one achievement I didn't get in that entire game), and I can't even convey how badly I want the 11th to get here.

I can definitely see the Nord appeal...TCrouch wrote:I almost always run as a Nord, and the fact that it's in the Nord province of Skyrim just makes it make more sense. I'm very surprised to find myself so obsessed with Skyrim's release. However, something just "clicked" for me, and I'm dying to immerse myself in the universe and just explore.
Re: Skyrim
Yeah, it's almost unfair. I loved Oblivion to death, but one of the big things I always longed for was dual wielding. Of course Skyrim has it, so...
Nords? Dual wielding with a sword+axe? AND FREAKING DRAGONS?!?!?!
I swear, it's unfair...

Re: Skyrim

This games pending release is the final nail in my WoW coffin.
Too many games at once.

Re: Skyrim
I really want it, but I may just have to wait. It's purely SP, so I won't miss any online. But with Forza (which I didn't plan on picking up), Ace Combat (ditto, but man, what an awesome game), Batman: AC, BF3...just too much at once.

I know, I've had to seriously re-think what I can manage.Teal wrote:I really want it, but I may just have to wait. It's purely SP, so I won't miss any online. I'm thinking it will look like this:
October 18 - Purchase Arkham City....spend 3 weeks completing everything in the game.
November 11 - Purchase Skyrim....spend 12 years trying to collect/do everything!
After a month or so of Skyrim, I'll likely pick up Uncharted 3 to break things up and serve as a nice change of pace.
Re: Skyrim
Really? All I saw was the Gamespot review giving it a 5.5 and went "phew, thank God I didn't get that one". And I was actually thinking about it after playing the demo a couple of times.Teal wrote:Ace Combat (ditto, but man, what an awesome game)
I just had this conversation with my wife yesterday, actually. I know every year once it gets near Thanksgiving this happens, but it seems to get worse every year. It's not only BIG games, but QUALITY games that demand your attention more and more.
Right now I STARTED playing Deus Ex and never finished it because I got Dead Island. I actually managed to finish Dead Island, but only because I ran through the whole thing co-op with my daughter's boyfriend over the course of a couple of weekends. Then I got NHL 12 and started that--followed immediately by Gears of War 3 a week later. So for 2 weeks I was all over the map--some Madden (kept firing it up as the new rosters came out and the Raiders kept getting better each week), lots of same-room NHL12 matches against my daughter's boyfriend again, then back to Gears of War 3 for one session of co-op. Suddenly Rage hits, and I buy that on release day. I literally play it one day before Dark Souls showed up in the mail from Gamefly and that game has consumed my soul entirely.
I'm STILL pouring tons of time into Dark Souls, and then Forza releases--and Ace Combat. Not to mention I started playing Star Wars: The Old Republic over the weekend, and I know Batman is next week. Battlefield 3 is a week after that (ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME?!?!??!), Lord of the Rings: War In The North is a game I've really had my eye on, Skyrim's less than a month away (along with Modern Warfare 3), Saints Row 3 4 days after that (oh yeah...and Assassin's Creed on the SAME DAY, as well as NFS: The Run...*sigh*), and TOR launches in December.
Then in the "normal" lull of Jan/Feb, we have January's UFC Undisputed 3 and Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning in Feb.
Just in time to get Mass Effect 3 on March 6th.
I am going to lose my freaking mind.
Re: Skyrim
Can you guys shed some light on what creating your character's back story is all about?
I'm reading through some threads on the Bethesda site, and people have developed these stories about their Skyrim characters - i.e. "I will be an orphan Nord who was raised by wolves, etc..."
Is this something you input into the game during character creation? Does it have any impact on your game at all?
Sounds intriguing.

Re: Skyrim
No, that's just the more nerdy-than-normal-nerds role-playing their characters.
We get bored and talk about how cool the game is.
Some people get bored waiting for the game to release and dress up in chain mail, sit at their computer, and type out a novel on their character's origins.
As far as I know, there is absolutely no benefit to it whatsoever other than personal immersion on the user's end. And yes, the nerd references are supposed to be ironic. Kettle, black, etc.

Re: Skyrim
Need to probably not hijack this thread, Terry, but yeah...it's a fantastic game. Gamespot's review is really bizarre. That and OXM-UK were the only two that knocked it. And neither of them give any real concrete reasons why they don't like it. Every other review site has loved it. It's an adrenaline rush unlike anything I've played. I'll do a thread on it and give my .02...

I shouldn't joke... if you're going to spend 100+ hours with a game, might as well make it count!
Re: Skyrim
Thursday night midnight release for me. I've only done 2 that I can recall (one for the Dreamcast, which was fitting since it was like 9/9/99 and this one's 11/11/11, and one for a version of Madden that I probably never should have done). Since I have Veteran's Day off, I can actually hit up the Gamestop here and grab it at Midnight without worrying about work the next day. Them releasing it on a 3-day Veteran's Day weekend is like an extra birthday present.
I've read every article on it, watched every preview, even browsed the leaked manual pages to get a feel for the controls. I seriously question my sanity, as I'm approaching addiction-level fits of frantic refreshing of video game websites looking for any new scrap of information--much like a crack addict scrounging for change for one more fix. I've played through Lord of the Rings: War in the North 2 separate times, working on a 3rd (entirely in 3-man co-op, and that game got a seriously bum rap in reviews when it comes to fun factor there), but every time I see something I compare it to what I expect to see in Skyrim.
There's something seriously wrong with me and this game. I've spent far longer than I care to admit trying to come up with what character I'm going to roll on Thursday night. Do I want to go with speed and dual wielding a norse barbarian (leading towards that)? A plate wearing sword-and-board warrior to withstand dragon flames with a shield? An archer to try and do ranged damage? Will I end up fishing or gathering ingredients to brew up resist fire potions before looking for dragons? Will I even follow the story at all in the first week? Will I be able to go all serial killer like I did in Oblivion, luring rich female NPCs into alleyways, only to slaughter them and steal their money/clothes/items?
And now there's information that you can unlock WEREWOLVES as a f*cking bonus race to play as???!?!?!?
Long live Skyrim!

Re: Skyrim
I'm also getting a bit obsessed with Skyrim.
I think my plan is to create an Imperial Archer. My reasoning is that playing as a human will add to the feeling of immersion. The archery choice is due to my preference for stealthy gameplay - I will probably play as the person who fights for noble causes but prefers to strike from a distance or use my charm to accomplish tasks. I'll likely specialize in alchemy as well.
I was thinking about a midnight release, but was worried about being too tired when I got home to create a decent looking character. I need to be at my sharpest for the setup!

Re: Skyrim
How long can you play Skyrim? "Forever".
http://pc.ign.com/articles/121/1212046p1.html
The main quests will have scripted sequences, but random quests will be continuously and infinitely generated. Even after you've finished all of the story quests and brotherhood/companion/faction quests, you'll still have endlessly generated side quests that you can complete.
1...more...day.

I killed my current WoW account in anticipation for this.
Psyched?....A little.
