I was looking to put downloaded Rugby games on my IPAD (first generation) and put them on the TV. Will AppleTV work with that or only with the Ipad 2?

What app do you use for playback? I think if the app supports video-out (which air video and the default movie player do), it works wirelessly to an appletv.

I convert it with Handbrake, sync it to the Ipad, and then watch with whatever the default movie player is on the Ipad.

Well I don't have an iPad1 to test, but I'm pretty sure that would work.

Allow me to suggest buying AirVideo for $3 however, and cut out the converting and syncing steps. Download to your computer, and instantly stream any format to your iPad. Works absolutely great over a home network.

Zumocast is free but it's one of those things you have to create a free account.

Air Video free also works, limited number of streams or something like that.

Air Video free limits the number of files per directory. If there's more than 3 files (or something) it will randomly bring up 3 files in the folder. Of course you could just have a ton of folders if you want.

I've gotten way more than $3 of value out of it.

I do it through AppleTV (iOS 5 includes streaming and mirroring from the iPad 2 finally). Looks good for content purchased from iTunes (like TV shows or whatever), but when you mirror, it looks only average.

If you're talking about doing it via HDMI...be warned that it only works with certain programs. Like you can't do any streaming of Hulu/Netflix/ESPN or whatever...a huge flaw IMO.
I wonder if it's Apple preventing this, so you'll be forced to use iTunes if you wanna watch streaming content on your TV.

AirVideo for $3 streams from your PC to your iPad. If you want to send that video from your iPad to your TV wirelessly, you need AppleTV.

Fellas.

I'm wondering if someone can help me out with a very basic question. Is there a way to connect my Iphone to my iMac without doing the full backup. I simply want to drag some songs from itunes to my phone, bypassing the drama of a backup.

Also, has anyone with a iPhone4 had any issues with the IOS updates? After having my 3g ruined by the update to 4, i'm very cautious about updating my 4 to IOS 5. (I'm happy as a clam with my phone as it is now)

any thoughts?

With iOS 5, you can choose to do the backups to iCloud instead of locally. I don't know if that means when you connect your iPhone to the computer, it would just sync but not back up.

However, in order to do wireless backup, I think you have to connect it to some power sources so you could be charging it with the wall charger.

iOS 5 has some useful features, like Notifications Center, faster access to the camera. Also lets you do OS upgrades over the air (OTA).

With iCloud, I believe any new song or app. that you download on your computer would automatically be downloaded to your iPhone, without having to connect to sync.

Yeah, the beauty with icloud is that you can have the same song that you bought in itunes synched automatically to your other Apple products. My switch to iOS 5 went smoothly with no issues although some people may have experienced a letdown in terms of battery drainage. Personally I haven't noticed a drop off.

Thanks guys for the insight into IOS 5. However, I'm not sure my question was answered. Is there a way for me to simply drag non purchased songs from my iMac (itunes) to my iPhone (via the usb cable) without having to go through the entire backup process?

I found this article:

http://www.mylittleportal.com/disable-i ... tunes-sync

It's a couple of years old so who knows if it still works with the latest iTunes, which is set up to support iCloud.

I hear ya. I was all set to order a 16GB wifi, but went with the 32GB because I wanted more storage and that iPhoto app they demonstrated was pretty slick. My
daughter loves to look at old and new pictures of the family, so I figure now I can put all our pictures on the iPad without any worry about hard drive space.

What did you guys make of the survey they cited in which a majority of iPad owners who also owned a console or a handheld answered that the iPad was their favorite gaming device?

That survey also apparently found a majority of iPad owners who also owned eReaders said the iPad was their favorite device for reading.

They must have commissioned that survey.

I know it's true, from first-hand observation.

I bought an Xbox 360 on Black Friday. Our boys loved it throughout December.

Our 11-year-old son had been saving all summer and fall to buy an iPad. He got enough money and gift cards from relatives at Christmas and his birthday (Dec. 27) to push him past the $500 mark, so he bought an iPad at the end of December. Our 7-year-old son still loves the 360, but the 11-year-old spends much more of his allowed gaming time on the iPad. Our 13-year-old daughter barely looks at the 360, instead doodling away in games on her iPod Touch.

Puzzling. I don't get it. I would MUCH rather play games on a console attached to a 50-inch HDTV, especially with the interaction provided by Xbox Live.

In fact, I have no interest in a tablet for any use. I thought for sure I would be OBSESSED with my son's iPad when he first bought it, and I did sneak in a couple of nights of use with it right after he bought it. But that fad lasted about three days, and I haven't touched it since.

Everything I want online I can get on my laptop, and my basic slider-keyboard text phone handles mobile communication. I don't want to be connected and staring at an electronic device everywhere I go. I still enjoy those antiquated pursuits called reading a book or getting outside for exercise or to talk with friends face-to-face. GASP! :) :) :)

Putting myself in the mind of kid (regular occurrence if you ask my wife), I'd think the 'personal' experience of playing games on a iPad would be pretty addictive. You don't have to share the controller, can stink at a game without others watching, and can play it anywhere (car, school bus, bedroom, etc). When I was a kid, I lost myself with a Walkman & headphones. If I could have played videogames at the same time, bonus.

I love my IPad 2 for card games, board games and the like. But when I want that hardcore gaming experience nothing beats my 360.
