Re: OT: RockSmith, where are my real aspiring Hendrixes?
I had the same experience on one of those songs that had a solo. I was cruising along, adding in some more notes, and then a solo comes in with orange, purple, and green. My brain completely locked up and I just laughed at myself as I let the entire thing scroll by. I thought Dark Souls was going to be the ultimate test, but I fear the brutal reality of this game might top it.

Re: OT: RockSmith, where are my real aspiring Hendrixes?
I'm positive it is my strings, I've always had trouble tuning that E string. I was about to buy an electric guitar anyway this might push me to do it.
I'm glad you posted because I thought I was imagining the scaling in the game during the same song. I did well and it kept throwing new stuff at me and when I completely f***ed up the Blue string it removed it during my next play of the song. That is so really good tracking if it's not just my imagination and the game is giving you a test based on your skill.
Anyone have a good recommendation for a guitar with a thinner neck? The neck on my acoustic is a bit big for my fingers (I have small fingers) so it has been challenging my guy keeps telling me to buy a new acoustic with a skinny neck.

It actually tracks from bar to bar, Dan.
I started off on a single note, and halfway through the song it's adding strings and notes. When you struggle, it pulls back during the same song.
I think I played about 12 different versions of that song on 3 play throughs.

This game is definitely intriguing. The only thing I worry about is whether it is fun or not for someone who has been playing the guitar for 25 years. I'm thinking yes.
This would be my controller:\m/ \m/

I don't know who it WOULDN'T be for, Scoop.
...and that thing is badass.
Some of the minigames and stuff are pretty cool and break up the tedium of your normal practice regimen...scales in particular. It's amazing what happens when they attach a score to your practice routines. It's like chasing the white rabbit, and you have tangible evidence of your progression. I imagine any of your routines are pretty much second nature by now, but maybe the Amp mode alone would be worth it.
The ridiculous amount of tones, cabinets, and pedal combos that lets me use my home theater system as my amp is pretty disgusting. Without having to invest in a bunch of mixers or stomp boxes is pretty crazy for the price of the game. Plus the 1/4" jack-to-USB cable works on PC, so there's that....

Where did you find scales, that was the first thing I looked for and I don't see them.

Re: OT: RockSmith, where are my real aspiring Hendrixes?
I didn't play them myself--I saw them in a video though. Scale Runner was the minigame I think, and it used the frets and colored bars matching the strings to let you play the scales, and they changed in speed as the guitarist got better.

Got my bundle and been banging away at techniques only. Played a little ducks and seeing the online scores from some of these people are insane.
I will touch songs once I get my muscle memory up to par. I've just been doing anchor techniques for about an hour.

Re: OT: RockSmith, where are my real aspiring Hendrixes?
Delayed until the new year here, due to some kind of copyright issue - apparently there's a band in Southend called Rocksmith who have already registered that name. Unless there's some kind of settlement reached, the case won't be heard until late next February.
It sounds exactly the sort of thing I'm after, though. I'm self-taught and I can get by on what I know, but I went down the same route as Terry and along the way, I haven't picked up as much theory as I really want to. Sounds like this would be a very fun way of working on my skills.
As far as controllers go, I have one of these and love it to pieces, but nobody's really gone down the Tired Old Rock Cliche route in this thread yet, so I'll show you my other currently-active axe instead:

For those who are having lag issues check this out for help.
http://www.thegamingvault.com/2011/10/r ... -problems/
The biggest fear with Ubisoft‘s Rocksmith is latency. While it is truly impossible to get no lag out of a game such as this, there is a way to reduce it to the point where it’s unnoticeable while playing. This guide will help you through the steps to get the most lag-free experience you can out of your new, awesome guitar game.
The standard “lag” for Rocksmith is 30ms between your input on a guitar and the output through your speakers/sound system/headphones. This is unavoidable and just inherent to the nature of the technology. You’ll find the same thing in Rock Band 3 whenever you play drum fills for Overdrive activation or the freestyle drumming mode. Your setup is important, and you have to make it count so you have the best possible experience.

Re: OT: RockSmith, where are my real aspiring Hendrixes?
I played this non-stop until my fingers couldn't take it anymore.
I can't believe how fast they ramp you up. I've been taking lessons for just over a year and I am not on hammer on's and off and other concepts they get to within 60 minutes in this game. An hour plus in and still nothing on chords but plenty on these "rock techniques". I can't deny the game is fun and it makes you want to do better but from a teaching perspective it seems to be missing the boat on basic concepts.
I'll play some more as soon as my fingers recover but tons of fun. I'm not having any lag issues and the screen resolution issues are not happening on my other 360's so there is some kind of issues with my one TV and the game. Doesn't matter I won't be playing it on that one anymore.

From all the great reviews I think I'll be snagging this sooner rather than later. Sounds awesome to get back into actual practicing, and I think my daughter could learn a ton too. I have some money left from a trade in so I think I'll be taking the plunge.
And keep the guitar pics coming!

Yeah by the time I finished playing Higher Ground for probably the 15th time, I got it up to 97% and had all of the palm mute chugga-chugga sections displayed, and they moved to full power chords. The sense of pride that you get from progressing up to the next level in each song is indescribable.
And same here, Dan. I played until my fingers were actually beyond painful--they went numb. I eventually quit playing at about 11:30 last night, but this morning even typing is painful. I may need to rest a day

Yeah I was doing the fret leveler I think it is called and I kept nailing it and I was thinking I should fail because I will never pull this off in the song. This game makes me want to take all my plastic instruments and toss them in the trash.

Re: OT: RockSmith, where are my real aspiring Hendrixes?
Went home at lunch...sore fingers and all, and played all lunch hour. At least my fingers are just sort of numb and beat to hell at this point. The only time it actually hurts is with bends.
I really enjoyed the Rolling Stones song they played. I don't know the actual chord names, but I think they had it alternating between an E chord and a C chord, followed by some noodling on the bottom 2 strings. That was a really fun little song to play.
Every time I feel like I'm starting to get comfortable with a technique, I get a new one thrown at me. I haven't really had to deal with many chords yet other than the power chord that every song seems to feature, so having to start using chord shifts is really getting fun. And not as frustrating as just playing by myself with no backing track or anything. When I screw up playing and I'm NOT using the game, it's just this big "chonk" and I stop, back up, fumble around..eventually get frustrated and give up.
In Rocksmith I've chonked it, then turned around and had the chord shift memorized by the 2nd or 3rd playthrough.
This is the absolute perfect way for me to learn.

This is a big help for me as well. As much as it points out that I'm worse that I thought, it's got that "on stage" feel where it forces you to just play through the mistakes.TCrouch wrote:When I screw up playing and I'm NOT using the game, it's just this big "chonk" and I stop, back up, fumble around..eventually get frustrated and give up.

Re: OT: RockSmith, where are my real aspiring Hendrixes?
What would be your evaluation of this for someone who has never played guitar? I've always wanted to learn but taking lessons at 40 is very unappealing. My younger brother plays guitar and drums and I'd like to learn a little bit so I could play along with him.
Also, has anyone gotten the guitar? Wondering how the quality is.

Re: OT: RockSmith, where are my real aspiring Hendrixes?
My daughter had never played.
My wife had never played.
Both of them are HOOKED, although they're definitely pansies when it comes to their fingers hurting. My wife loved it so much she went out and got fingertip bandages LOL. I'm getting phone calls at work in the middle of the day from my wife..."I got 36 ducks in a row!!!"
And I love her to death, but when you talk about eye-hand coordination and somebody I'd think of being musically (or gaming) inclined...she's not it.
So the mere fact that she's starting to nail some fret work and having a good time doing it speaks volumes IMO.

Re: OT: RockSmith, where are my real aspiring Hendrixes?
In general, the Epiphone Les Paul Jr. is a decent little starting guitar, but it's budget so some parts will just be cheap as all in this price range are. Part of the reason that it is good as a starter is that it is considered pretty versatile from clean blues to hard metal. I had been thinking about picking one up for my son prior to knowing anything about this game or the package deal. Getting the bundle gives you maybe a $10 or so discount compared to if you bought an Epiphone Les Paul Jr. from a store or online. Of course you could get them cheaper used. The main problems I have read about with this guitar is that the quality and construction can be hit or miss from one to another. Those made in Indonesia seem to be reported as "better" than those made in China. The tuning pegs are not the greatest and the action can be set a little too high or too low, but that can be adjusted. I am going to try and see if they will let me take a look at one before buying the bundle. You guys posting impressions are really helping me out on making a decision. As someone who has played for 30 years, but been stagnant for about 15, it seems like this could be just the ticket for getting back into it and a fun way to start teaching my son.Brando70 wrote:.....Also, has anyone gotten the guitar? I would send it to these guys they do reflow and more importantly reball which is resoldering the motherboard. They've gotten good reviews.backbreaker wrote:WOW!!!! unfreaking believable. Re: OT: RockSmith, where are my real aspiring Hendrixes?
Holy crap, man. Talk about bad luck.
After 2 straight nights of playing way more than I should, I awoke to a deep, nasty blister the size of a matchstick head on my ring finger, and a couple of small dot-blisters on my middle and index fingers. I think I may have to take a break tonight
.
I think what finally got me was last night after my fingers were already burning and felt like they were going to slice open, I went and tried their Chord Challenge, which was probably the worst idea in the world. "Hey, this hurts...let me see if applying constant pressure for 3 minutes helps!".

They have killer service. They'll return your disc and actually repair your unit as opposed to Sony just giving you someone else's 60GB. It's the same as MS. The other good thing going with them is they try their hardest to save your data.backbreaker wrote:Cool Thanks for the heads up. I still have my 60GB and if it ever kicks they'll be servicing it. Also they're accredited with the BBB.

WOW!!! Great news, I told one of my friends about my PS3 and he told me that their is a shop no more than 10mins away that fix his PS3 2 years ago for 50 bucks and he hasn't had any problems. They reflow the board with the same machine that goppher heads and put that new paste on it. I'll be back in business tomorrow. Numb burning fingers, gotta callous'em up to progress.
