Just to be clear I'm not saying it is a bad game I just don't know how anyone who hasn't been a giant Gears fan (i.e. pumped a lot of hours into 1 & 2) can notice a lot of difference to call this the best Gears game.
I agree with earlier points you made in your post (not quoted here) about the story being pretty much the same old gears. for the most part, at least for how little into the game I am, it is.

I wanted to quote the above because I didn't pump a lot of time into Gears 1 or 2 online because it didn't hold me. I found it to be a bit too difficult to have any success and a little bland. Gears 3 has a "casual" online mode that's just TDM for lower level players and it's a pretty even playing field. I got down the mechanics and gameplay and really started liking it a lot.

The whole thing is just wrapped up into a superb package and the "blandness" has been addressed by giving you individual goals to work toward. Earning ribbons, medals, etc adds a lot for me personally. Seeing a recap of how much XP you earned after each round, how it was earned, what ribbons you achieved, etc.. just adds a lot IMO.

Played some co-op horde mode last night and had a blast. The tower defense stuff is pretty basic, but still just a lot of fun to get with 3 others and work through it.

The graphics are top notch and the presentation of the package as a whole is top shelf stuff. Wasn't a big fan of 1 or 2, but I'm sitting here at my desk itching to get some more online gaming in with it.

Also as stated above, having dedicated servers has done A LOT to address lag issues and even out the playing field. I haven't once noticed even the slightest bit of lag while playing online.

Admittedly, I'm a competitive online guy and not that much into single player campaigns and the like. I just don't have the attention span for it I guess.

Just agreeing that the comparison was a bit 'off' and that Gears is probably more suited towards the over the top action and MP aspects than a game like Dues Ex. Exclaiming that you're let down by Gears3 because of the story just seems like your expectations are off of what the game should be looked at for.
You should go back and re-read my first post. I said I wasn't getting into the story which might of been because I didn't finish the first two. I wasn't saying I expected a Magnum Opus like Teal claims, just the story is predictable. My biggest gripes with Gears 3 is it is Gears 2 with minimal updates.

I'm not sure why people are so upset. I was simply posting my thoughts on the game for people on the fence like I was. Based on reading this thread most people think this game is a must buy, can't miss it title. I disagree with that, if you guys don't that's great it's why they are called opinions.
Agreed. Was kinda just stating my opinion of your opinion. Not trying to argue or call you out as a 'naysayer'.

Danimal - This post ^ would pretty much be my exact answer to your question of why I think 3 is better than 1 or 2.

Which is fine but that is all online which I said I hadn't tried.

Seems like the overall opinion is online is great so I'll give it a whirl.

Hell, if you think that 3 is just two with 'slight' upgrades, then I don't know what to say. Not in the, er, slightest. And the story is much more fleshed out. Oh well.

Holy lord. Horde 2.0. What a blast! Made it to level 17 with randoms. Fought a Brumak on level 10. A BRUMAK. Wow...

Two overriding impressions from about 4 hours of play tonight.

1. Fun, fun, fun! Single player fun. Co-op more fun. Horde is ultra-fun!

2. Very, very pretty. Maybe this was the case in 2 as well, but the color palette is much more dynamic and the game looks amazing.

I'll admit playing Horde mode last night was some of the most MP shooter fun I have had in a while. Being able to build turrets and other items is seriously cool. I need a little better explanation on how it all works.

I also found something in the menus I somehow missed for a few days and that is a video showing what's happened previously to Gears 3 which got me up to speed. I still doubt I will finish the campaign but I'll play Horde mode any day.

Speaking of Horde mode...I've only played one round (VERY fun) and I don't understand what the Command Posts do exactly.

Here is some good info I found.

and a good video with more info.

I didn't know we could trade weapons and the bonus objectives gave you stuff. I still can't find anywhere what you get from building another CP but I'll keep looking.

Yeah, I saw that first article but it still doesn't explain what CP's do for you. I think that they enable the fortification elements around the CP area.

This article is decent too:

Oh and I figured out last night that you can target enemies for your teammates similar to the way Battlefield does. I LOVE this feature! If you aim at an enemy using the LT button and then click in the left thumbstick you target the enemy and they have a large circle over their head that your entire team sees.

And in Horde mode you can target enemies even if you're dead by zooming around in 'ghost mode' and targeting. Could be very useful. I wonder if you can do that in MP modes?!

That would of come in handy last night as Rob kept saying "Behind you Dan" and I kept turning in a circle trying to find the bad guys.

As I understand it, you activate a command post - then you get access to all the barriers & stuff around it. So each post has it's own "stuff"

Due to not realizing this game came out this month I had to quickly finish Gears 2 before playing (still thought I had another month). I was able to play the first chapter last night and I liked it a lot. Especially after just coming off of playing Gears 2 single-player I noticed how much tighter the controls are and how much more the graphics pop. I am looking forward to getting in more time with it this weekend and maybe even some multiplayer with the DSP crowd. :D

I'm leaning toward passing on this one, or maybe restarting gamefly and renting it among others. I just don't think I'm going to get $60 out of it, especially considering I rarely pay >$50 for any game.

One real question though for everyone--will you still be playing this game online after COD3 and BF3 come out? I'm just worried it will be overshadowed very quickly, especially for online where I really sink my hours into shooters.

I got it :). I'll get some MP action throughout the fall and mess with the campaign. At worst I'll trade it in in a few months...maybe towards Uncharted 3. I'll look for you guys tonight if I get on.

Just finished the campaign, solo. Bloody brilliant. Fantastic way to wrap up the trilogy. Can't wait to go back in and do it co-op with any who want to. That was great.

Well, this one continues to impress. Been playing quite a bit of versus with randoms the last few nights, and can't tell who the host is. That's a very good thing. Also, they've beefed up the rifles to compete with the shotguns, and if you play the rifle like a rifle and keep at least a 10 foot distance, you can bring the damn shotty shits down;-). Some games I don't score a lick, and some I lead the board, which I've never done in random matches before. The balance is just right. Gonna get at least a 5 man Horde or Beast going tomorrow night, but if we have enough, we'll do some versus and king of the hill.
