I think the other thing is, gamers who've grown up with consoles and gameboys are set with that model, dedicated hardware, "deep" or long games.

It could just be that children who grow up with iPod Touches have this more lightweight gaming ingrained in them. They might just be content with Angry Birds types of game, going through dozens of 99 cent games instead of 1 or 2 console games for the same amount of money.

Obviously the touch screen is a big hit with toddlers and people have been buying iPod Touches or their old smart phones to their kids. Now some people are looking to buy cheap tablets (because $500 is too much for a kid) for their kids, not just for gaming of course, but as they get used to using the form factor and the touch UI, whatever gaming expectations this generation develops may be much different than our own.

All good and fair points. I've tried snippet games on my Zune HD which has things in common to what's on smartphones etc. They can be fun but there's generally not a lot to them and that's there main purpose. I like the fact when playing a mobile game that I can enjoy it for short burst and quickly put it down and not worry about a story line or feel like I might lose my place in the story or events of the game if I need to abruptly stop for whatever reason.

The beauty about the smartphone games is you don't have to worry about that because the size and scope of the game is quite small compared to games that are found on the DS and PSP.

You have to keep in mind that the Zune may not be representative of what's out there.

There are RPGs for iOS which will offer dozens of hours of gameplay if you want it. The range of games is vast, going back to 2D games to 3D games with console-like graphics.

Reason why a lot of the light games have taken off is that they fit well with busy adults' schedule.

PS Vita has a droid app as well it's called Play Station Suite. So you will be getting those smart phone games as well. They touched every base with this portable. When it launches you will be able to download PSP PSN games and map them to the right analog stick with some upscaling from old psp titles. So it will launch with some strong titles.

PS suite is for those guys in the garage trying to make a quick buck, but it has to go through an approval process to get into PS suite store.

Uncharted is being reported to be on a PS3 1st gen title.

So does that mean that if someone does an Angry Birds game or App that will go on the Droid or iPhone that it will run on the Vita? If so that's really cool. Has pricing for those types of games been mentioned?

I'm not really into those types of games but for those that are that is welcome news !

Glad the rumors about only making the Vita with half the RAM in order to control costs were wrong.

Mobile, tablet gamers will move to PS Vita - Sony

http://gamescom.gamespot.com/story/6329 ... Btitle%3B2

GS: So with the 3DS struggles and the PS Vita coming out, this is a point of speculation for lots of people. How significant is the impact that smartphones and tablets have had on the traditional handheld market like the PSP and DS?

JK: We view that as two separate demographics, and we've done a lot of quantitative and qualitative research to back this up. When you look at the type of consumer that's playing cell phone games currently, it's someone that enjoys smaller "kill time" gaming and has not gravitated to the larger, richer, deeper experiences that true handheld gaming provides.

We've certainly seen that on the PSP, and I know Nintendo has probably commented on it for their products, but as we go toward the PlayStation Vita, I can tell you that as we started looking at that product and the market opportunity several years ago, we saw a real strong demographic for those deeper, richer, console-type experiences. We had them on PSP, but we've taken them to a new level on PS Vita with the entirety of new ways to play.

That "new ways to play" idea, particularly for Vita, really differentiates from what's available on mobile phones or tablets and, frankly, what will be available on those platforms over the next three to five years. You're going to see PS Vita expand what a lot of people believe to be true about handheld gaming, and you're going to see a lot of those current mobile phone and tablet gamers come over to Vita. We're very convinced of that.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011- ... ive-report

Square Enix provided the most excitement of the morning with the announcement of a Final Fantasy 10 remake for Vita and PS3.

Capcom's Yoshinori Ono confirmed rumours of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 on Vita. He said it will be a launch title and perform just as it does on PS3/360.

Hideo Kojima also solidified rumours of the Metal Gear Solid and Zone of the Enders HD Collections heading to Vita.

Oh yeah can't wait for FF X and Zone of the Enders. I loved tha game on the PS2. :)

They announced prices on the proprietary memory cards for the Vita, which are about 3 times what SD cards cost for same capacities.

Battery life for gaming is claimed to be 3-5 hours, with Wifi off. Takes about 3 hours to recharge.

We've got a few games that should be coming out around launch for download:

- A sequel to Zen Pinball
- A sequel to Planet Minigolf
- A 2.5D action/strategy game with archery (Angry Birds) mechanics
- A martial arts-themed rhythm game where the action cues are animated 3d characters attacking you, rather than bars or arrows or button icons or whatever. This is my first original game idea to get made, so I'm pretty excited about it, but nervous about how it will be received

The device is pretty damn awesome, especially the screen. It's not substantially more powerful than the latest tablets and phones, but I do really like having physical rather than virtual buttons and directional controls and such.

Agreed, I hate virtual onscreen buttons and controls. I'll take real buttons and a joystick any day. This device should be awesome, can't wait day 1 purchase for me. :)

That's good to hear. Will the pinball game have the option to turn the vita both horizontally and vertically?

F*ckin' battery life.

How's the outlook for upgradeable batteries with this thing? I have one of those super batteries on my current PSP and it's great.
