OT: Android Tablet Thread

I reason I sh*t on iTunes is because it's bloated, intrusive and loads all kinds of unwanted sh*t on my computer. Don't want or need QuickTime? Too phucking bad you're getting it anyway. Uninstall one and the other goes with it and leaves over 1,800 unwanted registry entries on your computer.

There's better ways to manage your music whether it's Mediamonkey or winamp.

People are lemmings. Plus most people just assume iTunes is the only way you can manage files with an iPod. Plus if you're going to buy even one song from the iTunes store, you need the software.

So it's a nice little racket Apple has created and an incredibly efficient harvester of credit card data, as you aptly mentioned.

Nothing announced yet or even rumored really. Doesn't add much functionality, so I could really care less. The biggie will be if the tablets eventually go to Ice Cream Sandwich. That is what I'm looking forward to. Not holding my breath.

But...and it's a huge one...you're stuck using iTunes to load it. That's the point Rod is trying to make with bringing up the Cowon's. They can be plugged into any computer and they show up as a flash drive. iPhones and iPads have to be tied to an account through iTunes...unless they are jailbroken of course.

My biggest beef with all Apple portable devices. Apple hardware is gorgeous, and a lot of its software is intuitive as hell, such as Garageband. And then there's iTunes, one of the most bloated, unintuitive pieces of file management sh*tware foisted on humanity. Its sole purpose is to drive revenue to Apple, not to create any sort of intuitive file transfer interface for its users.

All USB devices should just be recognized as external drives on a PC or a Mac without the need for a clunky middleman.

Actually, the concept of files is an abstraction of how data is stored on a disk. MS and Apple have both looked at making access to content even more abstracted. For instance, a window might show all the photos you have on your computer, regardless of which directories they're in, because a lot of people don't deal well with the concept of a directory tree. These days, mothers and grandmothers are using computers.

So really an application is no less intuitive than a file manager for accessing files. I understand that the problem with iTunes on Windows is poor performance, which is understandable given how many features they bolted onto it since its origins as only a music library management application.

Yet there are way more Windows users of iTunes than those who use it on the Mac. Certainly bad software can hurt sales of devices. That's been the story of Sony's digital audio players. iTunes hasn't hurt sales of Apple's devices.

What's that? First i've heard of that.

Too much to type so just google ice cream sandwich android. Essentially it's a new version of android that will cover all devices...upgraded at the same time...not carrier dependent. All the major carriers signed off on the concept. We'll see if everyone follows through. First ICS device should be Droid Prime on Verizon this October (crosses fingers).

And the new Toshiba looks okay...depends how "thin" it really is while still including all the ports. Should be announced Friday:

I actually won't. It certainly looks cool. If I get anything it'll be a smaller tablet. 10 just seems a touch too big (8-9 would be perfect I think). And in reality...I play a few games and browse the net on the couch and read some Nook books, and that's it...I've almost sold my Tab a few times, but ultimately I got it for free (in a round about way), so I'll just keep it.

I still don't find tablets in general very necessary from a technology standpoint. My phone can do everything my tab can do, just a bit smaller.

I actually won't. It certainly looks cool. If I get anything it'll be a smaller tablet. 10 just seems a touch too big (8-9 would be perfect I think). You can't really browse the web on an iphone without getting eye strain or going half blind. It's just too small for the web. When you double that iphone screen and
go up to 7" (like my Dell Streak) it makes a huge difference. 10" does start to get a little bulky and too big to be very portable. I don't know why Apple never came out with a
7" size ipad? I think it would have sold a lot...especially if it was significanlty cheaper than the regular iPad.

I think 9 or 10 inches is right for a tablet.

First off, the screen size difference between a tablet and cell phone make them completely different things in my opinion, even if they run the same software. I can't stand to spend more than 5 minutes or so on the internet on an android smartphone because the screen is too damn small to have a satisfactory experience, with reading, video, pictures. It'll get you there, but it's not practical for more than a few minutes and minor tasks.

I'm still not sure 7" is enough either. For instance I always browse the internet with my tablet in landscape mode--I find in portrait makes the text too small to read comfortably and pages are shrunk down in general. With a 7" tablet, it's landscape mode is basically the same width as a 10" tablet's portrait.

Hate to disagree, but I will. I have used my iPhone 3G and 4 both to browse the web. I am 53 years old and have yet to suffer any of the consequences you describe above. That being said, I now have an iPad 2 and prefer using it over the iPhone, but when I don't have my iPad with me, the iPhone works just fine since you can zoom any webpage you browse to if needed....

I'm with Naples. My phone browser is great for settling a quick bar argument or looking up movie times etc. But to sit there and read an extended piece is just not a pleasant experience.
