OT: Best Sports Games Nobody Plays

Post by pigpen81 »

I thought this thread would be good for those sports games that not many people give the time of day but are exceptional.

My two:

Tiger Woods 2011/2012 Wii - Outstanding game when using wii-motion plus and all of the assists turned off. Graphics are a little dated, but the sublime gameplay more then makes up for it. I dreamed of golf games like this when I was much younger, and now that they are here, hardly anyone plays it. :(

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 PS2 - I have put in well over 100 games and I play it more then any sports game currently on the market. The physics and engine are tops. I have not tried the 2011 version as I still have to much fun with the 2010 version.

Any others?

Not really "sports games" per se, but I still think Test Drive Unlimited 2 and Midnight Club: Los Angeles are the two best arcade racing games ever made. Both are outstanding packages and the racing (especially in MCLA) is fantastic as well. They both got a little buzz, but not nearly what I think they deserve.

Rugby 2006 by EA Sports. One of the most enjoyable EA titles I've played on any platform.

Front Office Football. Made by one guy and yet light years ahead of the franchise mode of bigger NFL games.

I agree with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters for Wii. I'm away on assignment for work, but am looking forward to popping this in when I get back home. Fun, FUN game.

Not sure if Wipeout counts as a sports game, but it's a racing game so I will count it. Wipeout HD/Fury is an amazingly fun, albeit technical, game with great graphics and awesome sense of speed. The game is pretty hard on the more difficult levels so it takes some time and dedication to excel at it. I get dusted online by the experts, but the online community is pretty cool and not a bunch of dicks so it's still fun to play even if you are not an elite racer. Dollar for dollar the Wipeout HD/Fury package is as good as it comes.

Anyone remember Deathrow on the orig xbox? I loved that game. Part Aussie rules, part The Running Man. Great game (not great camera) that would be a great remake.

I agree on Midnight Club LA, much better than I expected, great atmosphere and the races are exciting.

I'm also a fan of International Cricket Captain 2009, which is a cricket management game, and Virtual Skipper 5, which is a sailing regatta game. There is a free version of VSK5, which needs to be online to play, but still is a great game; especially against live opponents, where I come in last pretty consistently.

Definitely SBK X. Mostly everyone is playing SBK 2011 either overseas or playing it in the US on their PS3. Heh, I know for sure I'm only person among my Friends list who's playing this game on the Xbox 360 a regular basis.

Anyway, in SBK X I'm currently in the seventh year of my 8-year Career doing all weekend pre-race sessions and racing a real number of laps in every class (Superstock 1000, World Supersport and World Superbike). So far I have experienced the highest of highs (winning the WSS championship in Year 4 and getting contract offers from top SBK class teams, then winning the SBK championship in Year 5) and the lowest of lows (getting fired last year by one of the top SBK teams for finishing 9th in the Rider Championship standings -- those punk bastards from Ducati Xerox Team!), and a bunch of unpredictable and flat-out crazy stuff in-between. (In one scenario I had a spectacular high-speed crash into a trackside barrier just past the start/finish line at Imola during the Warm-Up session that destroyed my bike and caused serious injury to myself which forced me to miss both races. I dropped from 5th to 8th place in the points standings after that round. Yeah, it was on the Xerox Ducati.) This year will be my rebound year riding the YZF-R1 for the Yamaha World Superbike Team.

Thanks for the post Kruz, I need a good bike game. So is SBK 2011 coming out for Xbox 360 in the US? I can't find any information on it. I assume this is the newest release. I found SBK X for $19.99 so I am thinking of picking it up, but I would love to get the 2011 season with Miller Motorsports Park. Do you know anything about the PC version? It appears available for digital download, but it also seems like it is in Italian.

Don, the SBK games tend to launch in North America several months after their European release. SBK 2011 came out here in May, so if it's coming to your shores it'll probably be in the next couple of months or so. I couldn't find anything definite, though. It absolutely tanked at retail in the UK and only lasted a few weeks at full price before being heavily discounted, as did the latest Moto GP game, so I suppose there's a chance they might can any planned NTSC launch.

Though it feels like the bikes turn a little too slowly to me, SBK X is an excellent game and a worthy addition to this thread, so I wouldn't hesitate to get on that at a reasonable price, mate.

I'm probably in a minority on this one, but I'd like to nominate the G1 Jockey series. I loved those games on the PS2 and, while there's not a massive amount of dignity in using the nunchuk as reins and the Wiimote as a whip, the Wii version is all sorts of fun too. Such a great variety of races and outcomes, with a lot of considered tactical riding required to win even on the best horses in the game.

Rugby 08 was an even better game, and this years' Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge looks excellent....and probably will be another game that fits this topic.

SBK X is published and distributed in North America by Deep Silver, Inc. And although nothing has been confirmed at this point, I assume SBK 2011 will be brought over by the same company later this year as GB_Simo already pointed out. I have made it a point to finish my Career in X before 2011 gets over here.

The only version of SBK 2011 out now is the Italian copy, but I do believe the English language is selectable somewhere in the menus.

Miller Motorsports Park is also in SBK X, though it's based on the 2009 season. The Losail Circuit (Qatar) is also included in this version as a bonus track.

I'm torn on whether Rugby 08 was better. Play was more realistic, with fewer offsides and better balance, and the line-in system was MUCH improved. But the new kicking system was so unintuitive that it virtually eliminated drop-kicks from the game, which drove me nuts.

I happened to enjoy the challenge of the kicking game in 08, rarely missed a drop goal in 06.

The biggest improvement though besides what you mentionedl, was the editable gameplay cameras.

Good point. Kicking was too easy in 06, but it was too hard in 08 for this slow, aging dude. :)

I'll make one last pimp of MLB Bobblehead Pros. Aside from skimping on a few season mode features (adjustable length, trades) plays a real solid game of baseball and is well worth $15 on XBL.

Thanks for the recommendation. Picked up SBK X for less than 10 beans on Ebay and I can't wait to try it!
