OT: Headed to San Fran for a Rockies game....

Post by Wilk5280 »

Wife and I are headed to San Fran for a few days to catch a Rockies game at AT&T Park (really excited to go to a game in this ballpark) and other stuff. That's where, hopefully, you all come in. Any recommendations for the "other stuff" and where's a good place / location to stay?

A few months ago when I went there, we stayed in Union Square. Not sure how much I liked it there as there wasn't a ton of stuff to see really close by. I don't have an alternative, just that I probably wouldn't recommend it. It's kind of in the middle of everything if you like walking, but it was a little much after a ball game to walk back to the hotel. Badass ballpark for sure...you'll dig it. If you haven't gotten tickets already, forgo the good seats down low and get some in the upper deck on the 3rd base side. The best views in the park by far. It's awesome up there.

Awesome park. I went there in 2001 while on a job interview and the park is awesome. Some suggestions don't forget the garlic fries and most important wear some warm clothes if you're watching a night game. It gets insanely cold.

I used to laugh when I saw fans bundled at Candlestick park during August. No joke it gets freaking cold once the sun sets.

And bring an umbrella, regardless of if there is rain in the forecast. It'll be raining seagull sh*t by about the 6th inning. They swarm and wait for the game to end. Just keep your head down.

Do you like garlic?

I highly recommend the stinking rose for dinner, just be prepared to smell the next day.

And if you want some grub mexican food in the union square area:

And be sure to get the cinnamon banana churro for dessert...holy sh*t...arguably the best dessert I've ever had in my life.

One of the higher floors in the Bank of America building used to be open to the public. I remember looking down at the Transamerica pyramid from up there years ago. There used to be an overpriced restaurant up there but it's closed and public isn't allowed up there any more.

There are some other restaurants on top of other skyscrapers. Probably overpriced for mediocre food but you can probably see several bridges, islands and across the bay.

I grew up in Wrigley and thought I'd never see a better ballpark than that one.

But ATT Ballpark kills it in every aspect.

DB is right, the upper deck on the 3Rd base side I'd recommend especially for tourists. The views of the bay and beyond are gorgeous. It's sort of high but you'll still be able to view the game without any problems. You can also get there early and tour the ballpark by just walking around. Check out the World Series Champions flag in Center, hehe. :D

If you go to a day game, make sure to wear tons of sunblock because there is no shade in the ballpark unless your sitting lower deck under the upper deck. If you're going to a night game, then bring a warm blanket, no kidding, even in the summer, remember Mark Twain's quote.

DB is right also about Union Sq. Things are nearby but it's a really scummy area. Basically most of downtown is scummy but if you stay in the tourists areas then you should be ok.

And don't worry, you can wear you Rockies gear loud and proud in the ballpark and around town with no threat of getting beat into a coma like you would @ Dodgers stadium.

WCO - I think you're thinking of the revolving restaurant on top of the Hyatt. I think they closed that down, not sure though, but it use to be a great view of the whole city.

I definitely didn't think it was scummy...hell my wife and I walked nearly everywhere and never felt threatened or anything (except when we were waiting next to the guy smoking crack at the bus stop by the golden gate park). My issue was more along the lines of everything being farther away than I thought it would be.

And Wrigley is better. Lol

Be prepared to take taxis (find a couple numbers and save them in your phone). If you stay at a boutique hotel off Market St, you might get woken up at 5AM by garbage trucks. If you're renting a car, you can save some $ by staying near SF airport, but then you won't be able to see the city as easily. Avoid Alcatraz and Pier 39, but if you're in SF on Saturday morning, the farmer's market at the Ferry Building has some booths serving great breakfast. Generally, avoid the Tenderloin area. Lots of good restaurants in the Market/Embarcadero area - check Yelp or Chowhound. Also, if you want great Mexican, hit a taqueria in the Mission district. Bring warm clothes - it gets surprisingly cold even in summer.

I responded on G+ and mentioned that the ballpark is in Wrigley's class for sure.

We sat in the upper deck behind the plate and you just can't beat looking out at the Bay while watching the game. First class all the way.

If you're lucky maybe you'll get to see Alex White or Drew Pomeranz pitch while you're there. :(

Looks like you'll be here last 3 games of the season. Should be exciting since it looks like it'll go down to the last weekend like last year.

I don't think we'll see Pomeranz this year at the big league level, but maybe White. Not really sure how I feel about the trade, but hopefully it works out for us Rockies fans.

We had a great time in San Fran. I absolutely loved ATT Park and the atmosphere there. Completely different from going to a game in Coors Field, where the crowd is mostly there for just a social event and not to really root for "their" team so to speak. You never would have guessed that the game Monday night meant nothing as it surely meant something to the Giants' fans. Sold out park, crowd was into every pitch, just a great atmosphere. There was a buzz as if it were a playoff game.

Enjoyed a day down around Pier 39, Alcatraz, Chinatown, Lombard Street, etc etc etc. Did some shopping Tuesday am at Union Square. Neat city for sure.

OH, and the weather on Monday was perfect. My wife and I had all these layers to put on at the ballpark, but didn't need them at all.

We stayed at the Westin on Market street and no issues with walking everywhere. Although after a full day of doing all the touristy stuff, we were about beat when it came time for the ball game Monday night.

A little rain Sunday morning, but we were at the sports bar watching the Broncos game anyway. By about halftime of the late games, the weather was about perfect for the remainder of our trip.
