Really, LeBron couldn't drive a racing car as well as professional racing car drivers?

I would never have imagined that.

Could any race driver hit a 3-pointer falling out of bounds with a pro NBA player jumping at him as LBJ did this year in the playoffs?

And it's interesting that you chose endurance sports for "neutral" athletic examples but not anything which would take advantage of an NBA player's explosiveness. No nothing about sprints or intermediates (400 or 800 meters), no high jumps, long jumps, triple jumps, pole vault, etc.

I remember hearing that former Hawk center Kevin Willis completed a marathon in well under 3 hours. There's no question that most NBA players could complete marathons if they decided to do it. They do a lot of CV training, though more geared towards bursts of activity but if your officemates are dropping 20 pounds and completing marathons, most professional athletes could do it -- except a lot of golfers :D.

And if you want to cherry pick sports -- there may be some NBA players who've played soccer, since a lot of them are international players -- then I could just as easily say LeBron played high school football so he would destroy any race car driver, especially European ones, on the gridiron. But it's a pretty meaningless comparison.

Hand-eye coordination is certainly a skill but so is doing a couple of between the legs dribbles, then stepping back and hitting a 25-foot jumper with a guy with a 7-foot wingspan jumping towards you. Lebron could probably become decent at driving a race car (if he wanted to, he could try after he retires, since his NBA contract probably would prohibit it). After all, Paul Newman started up race car driving after he was over 40 years old.

Wco if it makes you feel better, I too am an athlete. :)

Sure why not? My heart is pounding as i'm weaving in and out of traffic as i'm eating a cheeseburger in my car, texting and I have a deadline to make. Can I hit a 3PT, nope.

I think you mean to address that at PK.

Hey, I'm exercising some hand-eye coordination when I'm driving and playing with my iPhone.

My right ankle is starting to give me problems from all the years of braking and accelerations. I wonder if steroids would help me recover faster? :)

Please, please, please stop feeding the trolls. I come to this thread for insight and info into the weekly races. I have been a motorsports and track and field fan since the 1970's. I have absolutely no problem with anyone thinking that they are not real sports or real athletes. Who cares.

I will say that I call complete and utter bs on Kevin Willis running a marathon in well under 3 hours. Show me the proof of that. If he did it, there has to be official results somewhere. I have lived in Atlanta for over 30 years and have never heard any of that.

Exactly. As was your comparison between Jimmie Johnson and LeBron James. Both perform their chosen athletic pursuits as well as anyone in the world.

So again, what was your point?

I always find it funny that people pick on race car drivers. Lebron James probably couldn't hit a curve ball any better than Albert Pujols could hit 3 pointers. What is the point they are trying to make? They are completely different sports, and athletes one and all.

Funny thing is, I never hear a race car driver ragging on other athletes.

On another note, any of you guys heading to New Jersey Motorsports Park next weekend for the Grand Am race? I'll be there Saturday and Sunday.

Bernie Ecclestone says Channel 5 is an option for F1 if the BBC does not extend its current deal

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/93160

"Bernie Ecclestone has said that he would likely approach Channel 5 first if the BBC elects not to extend its deal to cover Formula 1.

The BBC's current contract to broadcast grand prix racing finishes at the end of 2012, and there has been speculation that budget cuts at the company could make it unable to commit beyond then - or even exit its contract a year early."

Save this in your favourites, mate, so you can direct me back to it at a later time. You'll probably need it: there is as much chance of me taking over as the UK's F1 broadcaster than there is of Channel 5 doing it.

Why? Mainly because Channel 5's sports budget is, relatively speaking, tiny. For a few years after it launched in 1997, 5 was good for two things - utterly desperate erotica on a Friday evening and sports coverage through the night during the week. They had as-live CART, NASCAR highlights, as-live AMA Supercross, live NFL, live MLB, live NHL, live NBA, live Moto GP, as-live MLS, V8 Supercars, Grand-Am, NHRA drag racing, ICS, A1GP, all sorts. NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA and Moto GP all had their own UK-based presenting team and a certain charm, though each of those shows was clearly working to an annual budget of 25 quid. Everything else was world feed.

Now, there's no faintly amusing soft porn and the only sports they show are Europa League football, a competition nobody really understands played by teams who'd sooner be somewhere else, along with highlights of England cricket. Apparently. I didn't realise they were still showing those, which gives you some idea of how heavily they're promoted.

The current owner is a chap called Richard Desmond, who also owns Express Newspapers and a company called Portland TV, through which he owns a variety of adult subscription TV services. That accounts for the loss of one key Channel 5 feature, then, but what about the sport? Channel 5 has always had the lowest viewing figures of the 5 terrestrial TV channels, but after showing signs of growth in the middle of the last decade, viewing share is getting progressively lower. The channel was a loss-maker for the previous owners RTL and one of Desmond's first actions upon taking over from them last summer was to look for £20 million in cost savings. I'm not very well educated on these matters, which is why I'm wholly prepared to eat crow in the future, but none of that sounds like the ideal background for any network looking to take on the rights to F1.

Channel 5's output was more Red Shoe Diaries, Emmanuele In Space, that kind of thing. On that basis, I might sit through a 10 minute freeview of the grid girls, but you'd get very poor odds on either of us going ahead with a subscription plan.

If that's not the most curious response I've ever written on here, then I really don't want to see the post that beat it.

Grrrr. The album is set to be viewed by everyone. In point of fact, none of my pictures have any security or privacy settings attached to them, yet whenever I change a security setting and preview my profile, it looks like my pictures aren't accessible to all. I'll keep looking into that but I'm not absolutely sure what else there is for me to click on.

EDIT: Got it! The above link is for Facebook users. Non-Facebook folk can go here instead:

It may occasionally say you have to Log In to continue. It's not necessary, so click Cancel and you can keep viewing.

My camera is one of these. It's only about 3 years since I stopped selling mobile phones and went to work elsewhere, but I'm staggered at the rate of progress and, to be honest, at how well my photos came out.

That was pretty hilarious. I could only name 3 and it was Colin, Jorge and Spies. I LOL when Kenny Roberts had Colin admit they have much eaiser today than they ever had it. Jorge: "where's the hospitality center"? Answer a beach chair.

Three-time 500cc World Champion Wayne Rainey. Legend. Was headed for his fourth consecutive world title in 1993 when he crashed at Misano, skidded across the asphalt and then suffered a spinal injury from hitting the rumble strips designed for car racing. Paralyzed from the waist down ever since.

So cool to see King Kenny, Lawson and Rainey in a video with the current Yamaha MotoGP riders. Those three American "old guys" have 10 World Championships in the premier class between them. All 10 came from 1978-92, when Yanks ruled the sport. Freddie Spencer also won two world titles for the Stars and Stripes during that era, and Kevin Schwantz won another one for the USA in '93 after Rainey's injury.

Nice to see both McLaren and Ferrari make some noise. Wonderboy was split between his teammate by Hammy and Capt. Morgan is 4th. There's less than .383 separating the top four and Massa was is .831 in 5th.

Outstanding F1 race this morning in Germany. Hamilton did a great job of getting a victory, as there was a lot of excitement up front for much of the race. Several times I thought for sure someone was going to take someone else out attempting to pass. Good stuff.

Red Bull is now officially in defensive mode. They no longer have the ultimate edge as everyone has caught up. That second place Ferrari was all Alonso, had little answer for the McLaren in the late stages of the race.

Finally back home after another fun (but HOT) weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park for the Grand Am.

My new favorite team (since my friends brother is no longer with MSR) the Wayne Taylor's Sun Trust guys came away with a second behind Ganassi's team of Pruett and Rojas.

Was able to catch the drivers meeting, which was cool. Also was able to chat with Wayne Taylor for a couple of minutes, which was really neat.

We were also talking to some of the crew for the Sahleen Mazda's team, when Justin Bell came up and commented that needed a setup more like the Turner Racing team next door. Turner Racing had a few, um, rather attractive young ladies with their cars. It was pretty funny.

Watching a bit of the race now, kind of weird seeing our little campsite keep flashing by. For those watching at home, I'm the blurry dot leaning on the fence.

One more race for me this year, the Grand Prix of Baltimore on Labor Day Weekend.

It's still pretty easy for Vettel to play defense with a 77-point lead and when a fourth-place finish is considered a poor result.

The racing this season has been scintillating in F1, even if the title race is over halfway through the season. I can't see Vettel limping to the title like Button in 2009 because the Red Bull is a better overall car than the Brawn, which relied on a huge, early-season edge due to its mastery of the diffuser.
