Regardless of what people think of the iPhone it did change the mobile device world and I think the computing world. I think we are better for it.

Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
Wait, my iPhone 4 doesn't support 4g?

Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
Even people with EVO 4G phones around where I live (which doesn't have 4G yet) think they're using 4G.
Lots of people (iPhone & Android users alike) have no clue what 3G/4G/LTE/Edge, etc. is.

Totally agree and the iPhone effect is still going. It made everyone want a "bigger" iphone and this lead to the ipad and now the tablet craze.JRod wrote:Regardless of what people think of the iPhone it did change the mobile device world and I think the computing world. I think that the Tablet will replace the old fashioned laptop pretty soon. With "go to my pc", you can even work on your ipad from home, so there
are fewer and fewer reasons to have a clunky desktop or laptop as your computer at home.

Different take on that survey:
http://www.informationweek.com/byte/new ... /231001283In other words, all the big players were at the table when true 4G was conceived as wireless data service capable of peak speeds of 100 mbps when the user is moving at higher speeds (like when driving), and 1 gig per second when stationary or moving slowly (as in pedestrians). Nonetheless, Verizon and AT&T are marketing their next-generation networks as 4G, even though the most commonly seen speeds are only about one-tenth that required for true 4G.

Didn't we already go over this? Verizon has the only true 4G right now...At&t introducing theirs later this year. T-Mobile is the only company that can even come close.wco81 wrote:Different take on that survey:

Getting 20mb down and 10mb up on my Thunderbolt in LTE coverage areas proves that point. Faster than my damn FIBER connection at home. Here ya go...want some numbers:

Seriously. Jared needs to upgrade the Wco bot's memory. Should have gotten the 32gb version, not the 16.XXXIV wrote:dbdynsty25 wrote:

ITU definition of 4G:

"True 4G" must make the marketing people chuckle.

There goes the Apple magic.
Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
What timing?
Some people were saying it's going to overshadow the release of Mango Windows Phones, as if they timed it deliberately to hurt that launch.

many are speculating he has only a few months left to live. If that's true that's really sad. He was one of the last true American entrepreneur types in the traditional sense. Created the company out of his garage, made it big, saw it go bust, and then back on top to heights we'll probably never see again.

I haven't seen the "months to live" stuff anywhere from any news source, but regardless, it's a big deal. Jobs is an innovator/business man of historical magnitudes, but I'd like to think Apple will keep 'doing their thang' without him. I imagine there will not be one new major product that goes out the door without his input of some sort, but once he's really gone "gone", it's anyone's guess.Lancer wrote:many are speculating he has only a few months left to live. My first ever computer experience was playing "lemonade stand" on a Apple IIe in grade school. As a college graduation present, my parents bought me a Performa 550. Once I made some $, I bought a 8600 & so on & so on. Now my living room looks like an Apple Store at times (wife's work laptop is macbook pro, I have a macbook pro, mac pro, ipad, & iphones). Apple would have to really, I mean REALLY, go off the rails for me to even consider bailing for something else. Hard to imagine.
I know some of my friends who own a lot of apple stock are worried about tomorrow morning. Oy..

Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
My take on Apple is that they'll do fine for awhile. They can live off of the iPod/iPad/iPhone for sometime and they probably have some things in the works to rollout in the next fews years. Where Steve excelled was his vision of ideas. I don't think Cook has that, he's just a manager type turned CEO.
I've read that they still have Jonathan Ive's. You can have the most creative guy on the planet but but it was Steve Jobs who told Jonathan this is what I want, build it.
In the short term 2-4 years Apple will be fine. After that I expect things to be more hit and miss as the competition starts to close in on Apple. I'm not a fan of Apple the company but I respect Steve Jobs and his skills as a guy with a vision for where technology should be to interact with people.

The one thing SJ was unmatched at were his keynotes. He gets a lot of media coverage, even in the years when Apple was struggling.
If anyone else gave that first iPhone demo and unveiling, it would not have had nearly the same impact.
