4 GB 360 console / original 360 hard drive

Post by FifaInspected »

Hi all,

This may be old news to most of you but It made my life a bit better over the weekend so I thought i'd share it.

A while back I bought a 4 GB 360. On friday I took apart one of my original xbox hard drive cases and slipped the drive itself into my 4 GB 360. This worked like a charm.

Does it fit securely? I'd read that it is not a perfect, tight fit. Also, would that void the warranty?

it's not a perfect fit as the drive itself is a fraction of the size of the hole. However, it does work.

As for voiding the warranty i'm not sure, but wouldn't be surprised. There once was a day when it would be hard for anyone to know what drive was slipped in there. However, in today's technology age i'm sure there's a screen flashing red in Redmond somewhere ;)

A little more research seems to indicate that this would not void the warranty as you are not breaching the internal components of the console. Once again.. i'm not sure i'd bet money on it.

I checked to see if you could get your console banned and it looks like you're ok. I thought I read some consoles that were using different hard drives were getting banned from XBL.

I did this a while ago, and have been running with my old 120gb hd in the new slim 360 since last October.

My impression was that it will void the warranty on your old hard drive because you are taking it apart, but I don't think you're doing anything to void the warranty on the new slim xbox.

it's certainly an interesting topic and creates some gray area.. Could MS ban a console for using another MS 360 drive? I guess, but I wouldn't be happy and it seems a little harsh. I could see banning consoles for hacking a 2TB lacie into the equation.

I am not worried at all about being banned for doing this.

As you say, even if they can detect an old official xbox HD, I really doubt they're too concerned about this "hack."

I have on "old" 120gb HD on mine. Used a bit of bubble wrap so the drive doesn't wiggles.

You can buy a xbox slim hard drive enclosure for cheap on ebay.

So you put plastic bubble wrap in a device that is known to generate heat like the surface of the sun? Interesting approach. :?:

Yes, I've taken the hd out a couple of times and the wrap doesn't show any heat marks.

Ban? No way. Refuse to honor the warranty? Likely.

do you use the xbox live profile attached to the old xbox hard drive, or do you need to create a new one? My elite RROD'd and I haven't replaced it yet. This sounds like it could save me $100. Thanks!

I'm still using the same old XBL tag.

No Pics required as it's so simple. If you need to see how it's done, go to you tube.

I did this to a 4gb console which had no previous hard drive. My profile was already on the 4gb flash memory so moving the profile was a non issue.

1. remove the screws (best you can as they are hex) from the old hard drive casing.

2. Remove the hard drive from the case.

3. Open the hard drive bay on the slim

4. Carefully align the drive with the slots and carefully snap it into place.

I did unplug everything as a precaution before I did this.

Personally I had trouble removing the screws in the old Xbox HD enclosure. They are torx screws, three different sizes (I don't remember which, but small sizes). I got a $6 multi-tool at Lowe's for the job. When I asked for help at the store simply to find a torx screwdriver, the employee took me to some and specifically pointed to one set and "this is what they use for xboxes."

Im pretty sure you can buy empty hard drive cases for the slim 360s on ebay or some of those enthusiast modder sites.
