OT: Anyone still have their Dreamcast (Propeller Arena)?

Post by F308GTB »

Propeller Arena was canned after 9/11 due to the subject matter. However, the code was finished and finally a few years after it was canceled it's been "released." I downloaded it yesterday (not that I condone piracy but it's the only way of getting this one since it wasn't released by Sega) and took a few spins. Similar to Crimson Skies but more arcade-like. Tremendous graphics - one of the best looking games on the DC and it rivals today's games.

As it should. I've still got mine and I play it occasionally as well.

Do you need to mod your DC to play it? If not can you pm me and let me know how to get started.

You don't need a mod chip. It's a self-booting rom that works no problem on any DC. If I could stick the file somewhere temporarily for download I would (know any place that will host a 400+ MB file?). I downloaded it from supernova.org with BitTorrent. Took forever - 16+ hours due to the way BitTorrent works. If you go that route, just do a google search for BitTorrent to download that part of the software. Then go to www.supernova.org and then to the Games/Dreamcast section. Just click on the Propeller Arena link and half a day later you'll have a compressed .rar file. From there, unzip it and burn. If you have a program that burns .cdi files, use that. If not, download something like "Alcohol 120%" which has a 30-day eval. Burn and play.

That sounds illegal.

Just kidding...I've got about 40 burned DC games. Gotta love a lack of copy protection.

If you give me a day or two I can try to upload it to some space I do have. The file would be fragmented but it would probably be a faster download.

mo, http://www.dcemulation.com/ is a great site for homebrewed games and older system emulators for the dreamcast.

F308:

Sixteen-plus hours for a 500 MB file? Man, that sounds incredibly slow. BitTorrent shouldn't be that slow. As you know, one of the beauties of it is that it cranks once it's wound up with a lot of seeds.

I downloaded a 400 MB trance set with BitTorrent in about three or four hours last month. Did the same with the Led Zeppelin box set in about the same amount of time. Sounds like your BitTorrent client is hogging resources or some other problem.

Have you tried BitComet at a BitTorrent client? Very, very good. Uses a lot less CPU resources than other BitTorrent clients.

Take care,
PK

That's a game that I definitely planned on getting and was pissed when it was cancelled.

Did anyone have Alien Front Online???? I thought that game was so fun and then it became boring after not too long.

I got it yesterday. It only took about 4 hours to download, maybe less. Haven't burned it yet will try that tonight. Thanks again for the tips. Is there anywhere else you can find DC game .cdi files?

Yes, it leaked and boy was it terrible. Load times were the worst I'd seen on the DC and the controls were just terrible. Graphics weren't that great either. Seemed like a very half-assed effort.

boom: wow. Am very suprised. Don't believe i've ever anticipated a game harder than Half-Life (DC). When that game wasn't released, well...won't even get into it.

btw, have you played the ps2 version? If so, would you consider it superior to the dc version? thanx.

I think it's a bit worse than the PS2 version, it's choppier than hell in spots and has ridiculous load times. Although, like most early games that appeared on DC/PS2, the DC version looks a bit better in some spots. Definitely looks better than the PC version, although the framerates have to be taken into account when talking about that. Most of the above sounds negative, but it was actually all pretty decent and definitely worth trying as a Dreamcast curiosity. If I could find mine I would give it to you, but it's probably an unlabeled CDR that could be in a zillion different spots. If it ever turns up....

I don't think it looked any better than the PC version by any means... No way IMO.

Anyway.. I'll look around. I played it for 10 minutes and wanted to puke so I never put it in my precious DC again.

I did just acquire Propeller Arena. Got burn it to disk later on and give it a spin.
