There's no way these details wouldn't have gotten out. It's too big of a story. And even if the government had kept it under wraps, the way Jack suggested, it wouldn't have been that difficult to figure out which units were likely involved. Given the nature of the raid, it would almost be certain that this was a Delta or a SEAL Team 6 operation. The airborne infiltration by stealth choppers, impossible to conceal given the wreckage of the one chopper and the presence of witnesses in the neighborhood, would implicate the involvement of the Night Stalkers. The home bases of those groups are also publicly available. So regardless of how much info was publicly released, I think AQ would probably have pieced together enough information to have a good idea which units were involved, and the potential safety issue would remain.

I also think that, psychologically, we as a country wouldn't have accepted a vague account of Bin Laden's death. There has arguably been no greater foreign enemy we have wanted dead with the exception of Hitler. We wanted to hear the details, and frankly, I think those details have been good for us to hear. A lot of people have put aside their partisan bickering to jointly celebrate or at least take relief in the killing of bin Laden. I know I'm glad the f***er is dead, and I'm a dirty liberal. I'm pretty sure that people who are arguing that too much info was released would be the same ones complaining not enough info was released (after all, look at how many conspiracy theories sprouted, some from mainstream media sources). I think, too, there's a desire to celebrate one of the biggest intelligence success we've ever had.

Terrorists tend to go after "soft" targets.

Americans abroad would be easier for them to target than targeting anything in the US and probably civilian instead of military targets.

But it is a valid concern about the safety of the soldiers involved and their families.

I don't mean to downplay concerns for the safety of those soldiers and their families. The names of those commandos should be guarded with the highest possible security. I just don't think keeping the details of what happened or which units were involved a secret would have necessarily prevented AQ from figuring out what likely happened. There are such a narrow range of units that would be used for a mission like this.

Not trying to argue but not really. All Rangers and Air Assault troops are trained to pull off those types of missions. This is an incomplete list of Special Ops components from all branches. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Sta ... ons_forces

That list doesn't mention 10th Group out of Ft Carson. The Army has "Units" on every major instillation. Most are Battalion strength.

I agree to a point. Details...sure. Units involved...no.

Fort Hood type attacks are what every soldier fears right now. Specifically unsecured off post families. This isn't just my personal opinion, I'm getting this from many fellow soldiers at Forts around our country. The followers of the coward are looking for payback with large casualties. Your spot on. It's a very valid concern.

Unless there's a subgenre of porn with women in full burqas, this further eats into the mystique of a warrior in a cultural struggle against the immoral west. I guess having 3 wives who aren't allowed to leave the house wasn't enough.

I think all the stories are coming out on purpose now so to confuse everyone and protect the guys who went in. We don't know and probably will never know the true story, but it should be that way, to protect the troops involved. People who have their own agenda's on either side will twist whatever story comes out to suit political views, but if McCain is saying torture didn't help then that's a sign he's signed onto the confuse and protect program they layed out this week.

All I got out of all the stories this week was that the mofo was still dead. :)

McCain isn't trying to confuse anyone. He has maintained all along that we shouldn't torture people. He's merely being consistent, something I can appreciate. Besides, there have been people who have worked within the renditions program who have said the same thing that McCain is saying. Any talk about getting reliable info out of people who were waterboarded a lot of times is based on speculation. The actual people who know something about the topic are saying that we got a bag-full of lies and bad info from waterboarding. The best info has come by way of other means. In fact the best tips we received about the courier did not come from anyone being waterboarded. Much of the crap in the MSM about this topic is nothing more than spin and ignorance, echoed by people who spout off knee-jerk reactionary opinions based on nothing that resembles reality.

I misread that as "It's important to abuse yourself" which made it even worse.

Isn't that what we got, precisely? I mean, we have 18 different accounts of what happened, then it didn't happen, then it happened a different way, then it was SEAL team 6, then it wasn't, then it's Delta, they killed two of his wives, they only killed one, wait they didn't kill either wife, now neither wife was there, and it was just some random broad that was shot in the leg, it was an intense firefight, wait, they weren't armed, well maybe one was armed, bin Laden fired at them, no, he was unarmed, no wait, he looked like he might have been reaching for a gun, he was on the toilet, he was in his skivvies...

How is that not vague?

Honestly, f*** Disney! Trademarking and profiting from SEAL Team 6 rubs me the wrong way. These guys are American heroes who put their lives on the line and do not need some multinational corporation making money off their name, not to mention possibly putting unwanted attention on a group that is already has an X on their chest now.

It's all becoming clearer -- this is a ruse to distract us from the real team that took down Bin Laden, the Penguins of Madagascar.

Heard an interview about this this morning on NPR and was captivated. Here's the whole article from The New Yorker.

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011 ... t_schmidle

Needless to say, we got some badasses on our side.

BTW - the entire time I couldn't help but think of Call of Duty. These guys were cool, clinical, and rehearsed.
