I would...if I could find one.

If there's one thing I could magically undo, it would be what technology did to the record store. Well, there may be a few other priorities, but that's near the top. :)

Hell yes.

I went often to virtually ever record store from the North Shore to the South Suburbs. LOL We used to spend entire days doing things like going up and down Oak Park Ave. (Valhalla, 2nd Hand Tunes and Chicago Digital, with its glorious, glorious stash of bootlegs) to Lincoln Park, then Wax Trax, then over to Rolling Stone up at Harlem/Irving, Beautiful Day in LaGrange etc.

In college we would make those sweeps, stack up on bootlegs and bring them back to UofI to sell for a profit to fund our drinking. Few Freshman could resist parting with $50 for a new Living Colour or Stevie Ray Vaughan boot.

On rainy Sundays we'd get the guys who owned Chicago Digital in Oak Park to let us sample for hours. Can't even count the number of artists that I discovered this way.

I covered for you guys - I went to 3. Didn't buy any of the Record Store Day special releases but did take advantage of some sales.

Hell if I know. About 3 songs in he says "F' this! We're not playing anymore!!" and throws his mic down. The rest of the band is just looking at each other. After a few minutes, he re-appears on the stage. He then runs over and starts "MF'n" some dude on the side of the stage. THEN the band starts playing, but he refuses to sign & just stands there smoking a cig. After a few songs, he decides to start singing again. My guess is when he walked off the stage, someone said 'you don't play, you don't get paid' & so walked back out there. No idea what he was so pissed about. There were no sound problems or anything (that I could tell). Cocaine is a crazy drug 8O ...

Regarding Record Store Day: http://www.recordstoreday.com/Venues?st ... =&zipcode= I'll be heading out there. I've actually been buying vinyl again. Just something cool about it. Hell, it was only format that went UP in sales last year. Even Best Buy is making more room for turntables - go figure.

Sorry for the long post, but if you're interested in the 'fall of the record industry', I've been reading 'Appetite for Self-Destruction'. Very cool read about how the industry got blasted by (and mishandled) technology. The indie-record store being one of the saddest causalities...

I bought a turntable a couple months ago and have been going a bit vinyl crazy. SO much fun though. Really makes me appreciate the art of 'album'.

I don't think I've been in a record store since I was in Italy in 2001.

It is. I pre-ordered My Morning Jacket's new album on vinyl & I intend to avoid the MP3's (at first) and listen it as an album (ya know, side 1, side 2). You also get a code for a digital copy that I'll eventually use. What's funny is there are some albums I could care less about but now love listening to on vinyl (Fleetwood Mac's Rumours). Throw on the vinyl & it's a cool time warp!

Exactly. (bought 'Rumours' for $2 a couple weeks ago). Went to a Vinyl fair last week and picked up a bunch of stuff. Got the new TV on the Radio and Panda Bear. LOVE the digital download card idea too.

I think when it's all over, they put up select performances to re-watch.

There's not much to see. From CNN.com:

Cee Lo Green, who's been all over the airwaves recently in his latest incarnation of "The Lady Killer," was 30 minutes late for his late afternoon set. The desert sun was still blazing at 5:20 pm when he finally made his appearance, and the Atlanta-based R&B/pop singer wasted no time in complaining about his daytime slot. He played five songs - including the Gnarls Barkley hit, "Crazy" and what he likes to call "the adult version" of his Grammy-nominated single, "F*** You."

His set was scheduled to end at 5:40 pm. At 5:44 - just as he was apologizing to the crowd for being late, saying it wasn't his fault because his plane had just landed - the audio to his microphone was abruptly cut. The big screens on either side of the stage showed Cee Lo continuing to talk, and his band continuing to play, yet no sound was coming out of the speakers. Finally, he put a white towel on top of his bald head, walked off stage, and threw the towel to the ground - never to be seen again by Friday's Coachella audience.

No doubt. I love the convenience of MP3s but miss browsing the stacks for music. There's actually a record store near my place (C.D. City in Highland Park). Went there and paid way more than I should have for a couple of albums just to have the experience again.

Between my GF and I we dropped over $100 on Record Store Day. You're welcome small local record stores! :)

Protest the Hero's new one entitled "Scurrilous" is outstanding.

I have also been listening to a band I just discovered called Sylosis. They have 2 albums and they are both very good. Elements of several styles of metal and very musically talented. Check them out.

J Mascis' new record, "Several Shades of Why," is excellent. It's a soft, acoustic departure from his ear-crushing crunch with Dinosaur Jr.

It took me a while, but I've finally warmed-up to Kurt Vile's 'Smoke Ring Around my Halo". I freaking love the album now. Also, really liking Pains at Being Pure at Heart's Belong. Although, I'm pretty sure I bought that album about 30 different times in mid-90's....

Emmylou Harris is an absolute marvel. At 64, she continues to sing and play magical tunes. Her new album, "Hard Bargain," is fantastic. No doubt this record will show up in my top 10 at the end of the year.

Love her!! Seeing her perform at the Disney Concert Hall a few years back (where she did a number of Gram Parsons' songs) was unforgettable. Mirror Ball is a staple around my house, too.

Missed her playing at the El Rey in Los Angeles recently. Since we are on the subject of country music I'd like to mention the Hot Club of Cowtown. They play a combination of hot jazz and western swing. I am seeing them play at a guitar shop in Santa Monica tonight. They are touring to promote a new album in which they cover nothing but Bob Wells songs. They are a great band of superb musicians.

New Fleet Foxes album is pretty sweet...the title track "Helplessness Blues" is quite incredible.
