This album is absolutely EPIC. There's no way in hell I ever would have grabbed this record without that video. Even a vivid description wouldn't turn me on. But hearing is believing.

I find myself cracking up at most of it because it's so over-the-top and campy. But these mofos can flat-out play. Such a fun record!
I haven't heard this yet, but from the descriptions they sound almost exactly like Manowar. That is a good thing, btw.

If anyone is a Strokes fan, their first album since their disappointing last release 5 years ago comes out in a few days, and is available one free streaming until then at http://new.thestrokes.com/.

I like Peter Bjorn and John latest album. You can get a preview at NPR. It releasing later this month. Though it looks like moved to the Vampire Weekend (1st album) side of the spectrum.

I happened upon their version of the disco song "Rasputin" and nearly plotzed. Who knew battle metal and Eurodisco could play together so nicely?

I just finished Sammy Hagar's book "Red". I'd like to welcome Eddie Van Halen into 'Rock's All-Time Wackos' hall of fame. Highly recommended read (and I couldn't stand the Sammy-era VH).

Rolling Stone, a few issues back, had some excerpts from it that had some of crazier Eddie moments in it.

The vocals are a little more guttural than I usually like but I really dig the music. Pretty impressive for 15.

Bought a new version of an old classic: 30th Anniversary Edition of Moving Pictures by Rush. Sprung for the CD/Blu-Ray combo and listed to the album in DTS 5.1 surround. It's the first time I've ever bought an album mixed in 5.1 and it was really cool to listen to. The surround wasn't overdone and the clarity of the recording was amazing. There was so much depth to the sound.

Also saw them on Tuesday at the United Center. Rush may not be for everybody, but it is amazing that those three guys can be in their late 50s and put on a show for three hours. I think they play harder now than they did when I first saw them in the late 80s.

"2112" is still one of my favorite hard-rock albums.

TONS of good new releases are whirring on my hard drive:

Foo Fighters - "Wasting Light"
Alison Krauss & Union Station - "Paper Airplane"
Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit - "Here We Rest"
Bill Callahan - "Apocalypse"
TV on the Radio - "Nine Types of Light"
Panda Bear - "Tomboy"
Paul Simon - "So Beautiful Or So What"
The Kills - "Blood Pressures"
Explosions in the Sky - "Take Care Take Care Take Care"
The Raveonettes - "Raven in the Grave"
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - "Belong"

Love Rush as well. Grew up around the block from Geddy Lee (20 years after he did mind you). A friend of mine actually has an old library book from his high school with his name on it!

New Panda Bear and the new TV on the Radio are great! Was able to find them at a record fair on vinyl last week (before they were officially released).

As for Rush...saw them here in Chiago alst summer. Great show. I'll have to check out the Moving Pictures BluRay.

I'm surprised how much I'm digging the new Foo. The last one was decent but that double album really didn't do much for me. This new one is some of their best stuff in several years.

Greg Kot from the Tribune said something that expresses exactly how I've always felt about the Foo Fighters. He said he likes the idea of the band much more than he's liked any of their actual songs.

This album is definitely the first thing they've done that I've had any sort of emotional reaction to, so it's a definite high-water mark IMO.

Three reasons for that, in my mind.

One, Butch Vig twisted the knobs and recorded on tape in Grohl's garage. Two, Grohl brought in Bob Mould to sing and play on a track and Krist Novocelic to play on a track. It maybe influenced the recording of other tunes.

But I think the biggest reason was the return of Pat Smear as a full-time Foo. Smear is Nigel Tufnel -- he only plays at 11. That adds a LOT of muscle and noise to the Foos' sound, which was missing from the last few albums as Grohl and Co. veered more toward pop-rock.
