same here.

My wife has a Captivate and every time I use it, I can't want to get back to
my iPhone. The iPhone is so much more intuitive.
Ditto. I've had a little experience with a few Android devices (friends, etc.) and wasn't overwhelmed. Hardware on some of the devices might be a different story but as far as operating systems, iOS is at the top of my list. To each his own however.

It's definitely more complicated and that's mostly because there is a lot more to do on it. I've recently ventured into custom roms and holy crap, the possibilities on the Android platform are literally endless. Stuff you can't even dream of doing on the iPhone really. Little things like notifications are handled SOOOO much better on Android it's not even worth discussing. It's really shocking that Apple hasn't adopted the Android way of doing it yet, but then again, we know that Apple thinks their way is always best.

Depending on the phone/manufacturer, there are certain pluses and minuses to software but that's mostly because the companies like to put their own skins on top of the OS. Once you know it and use it for a while, you'd understand the Android Communities love for it. iOS is overly simplistic after learning the nuances of Android. Some people are just simple minded I guess.

Android appeals to people who like to tinker.

But increasingly, there are complaints about getting the latest OS updates. HTC seems to get higher marks than Motorola or Samsung for putting out updates.

Meanwhile, the incentive fro manufacturers is to not update the phone bought 6 months ago to the newest OS, instead making people buy the latest phone in order to get the latest OS.

Even among Android users, it has to be a small percentage who will root their devices to load custom roms. Most depend on the manufacturers to get 2.2, 2.3, 3.0, etc. to their phones.

I don't have my iPhone jailbroken nor I am interested in doing so. But for those that what to tinker and goof around their iPhone without Apple's approval, can't they custom make and play around also with the infinite choices available once they jailbreak their iphone?

Fill me in. What's an everyday use case for 'customizing roms' on a phone? And how does it handle notifications better (being serious, I really don't know)? I've never heard anyone say the reason they prefer andriod is over roms or notifications.

Roms add different skins and sometimes functionality to everyday apps. A simple example, the camera. In the standard Motorola ROM you have to slide open a tray on the side of the screen to select the flash and then to turn it on or off...so three or four screen presses. On the Liberty 1.5 ROM I installed the icons are superimposed over the live viewfinder (what you are taking a picture off) but very faintly...and they are toggle buttons, so you can just tap on them to turn them on or off so it's one click. The functionality is there with Android, you just may have to dig for it...with the roms, people make things more accessible and sometimes better than the original interface. As Wco said...Android is definitely for the tinkerers.

As for notifications. When you're browsing the web on the iPhone and you get a text message...it pops up in front of your face so that you HAVE to deal with it...you have to make a decision, either dismiss it or read it. On Android, the notification comes in on the toolbar on the top of the phone...you don't have to do anything with it, it scrolls the message along the top so you can glance at it IF YOU WANT TO. You can get multiple texts, emails, chats, whatever...they all are stored in the notification bar to be dealt with when you want to. It may not seem like a big deal, but in the practical everyday use, it's fantastic how notifications are handled in Android.

And those are the only two reasons I prefer Android. A couple more: fully integrated widgets (updating live weather, facebook, twitter, toggles for wifi, bluetooth, etc), free google maps navigation (which works better than my car's gps because of real time traffic), expandable memory with micro SD cards and of course full Google integration. I buy a new phone, sign in with my google account, voila, EVERYTHING is sync'd automatically (emails, contacts, calendars) without having to plug the thing into iTunes or a PC at all.

Not necessarily...not like you can with Android. You can change the look of the iPhone but you aren't installing custom roms that change functionality. At least that's how it was when I had a 3G iPhone when it came out a couple years back. Maybe it's changed, but you don't hear about it like you do w/ Android, so I presume you're still severely limited.

I've seen people do some wacky stuff on a jail broken iphone a few weeks ago. as neato as it was (and the rom stuff db is talking about), none of it is my thing. seems like more of a time waster than anything.

Some people jailbreak to unlock, so they can use their iPhone on TMobile, even though they can't get 3G data services because TMob uses different frequencies. But the voice plans are cheaper.

I've heard there are widgets which will show live weather and other info. without having to launch apps. Then there are things like live wallpapers, which sound neat but may not be great for battery life.

I think there was multitasking in jailbroken phones too.

In the Android scene, a lot of people root their phones to be able to get a later OS than their phone maker has rolled out. But custom roms are available only for the most popular devices, not all models. So some people buying Android tablets are expecting that there will be Honeycomb (3.0) roms for their 2.1 or 2.2 devices that they buy now.

Different strokes for different folks. Next cell phone refresh I'm 90% sure I'd like an Android and my wife will insist on the iPhone. She's used both iPhone and Android and prefers the iPhone. *shrugs* Simple, usable and chic I guess. I intend to tinker with the android though and hopefully enjoy more features.

Needless to say, the Verizon iPhone launch isn't exactly as big as an At&t one. LOL.

That is classic. Guess everyone pre-ordered.

Yeah, I pre-odered mine and got it this past Tuesday. I did go in today and bought a nice case and screen protector. There was a security guard out front and there were people inside, but it looked like a normal business day. Granted, I wasn't there when the store first opened.

Based off the people I had to deal with starting from Monday...that would be correct that they all preordered..

But then again, the only people that were allowed to pre-order were current Verizon customers...so I guess the flock to switch from At&t to Verizon didn't happen, at least at that particular Apple store. LOL.

I'm stuck with AT&T I guess. I re-upped when the 4 came out and I don't want to pay a penalty and then have to buy a new phone or else I would switch in a minute.

Anyone who is on At&t that wants to switch is WAY better off waiting until the 5 comes out...WAY. Especially if Verizon finds a way to include 4G LTE in the next version.

There are more Verizon locations than there are Apple stores, so maybe the herds flocked to VZ. Flimsy excuse, I know. :)

All I know is when I got my 3G back in the day, I went into an At&t store, had to order it and wait 2 weeks. That sh*t ain't happening today whatever the excuse is. Hopefully people are smart and are waiting for the 5 (whatever that is)...not getting a 7 month old phone. But then again, the rumored 5 is only going to be a speed bump (think 3G to 3GS)...so for most people it probably won't matter anyway.

Even if there are a ton of pre-orders, that's pretty (hilariously) embarrassing for verizon.

Not sure why that's embarrassing for Verizon. They are doing fine with Android...as are their users. It's Apple who thinks their sh*t doesn't stink...way more embarrassing for them. As I have said a million times in this thread...anyone who wants an iPhone, has one already. The droves of people on Verizon already went the way of the little robot, and most are perfectly fine with that.

It's kind of funny really with everything that has been leading up to the launch. I have already started getting questions about the iPhone 5, even before the first wave of the pre-orders started. Like DB stated, true, there were alot of people who wanted the iPhone, but they were already on VZW or they got fed up with the "rumor" that it was coming sometime before the next decade and went to AT&T to get one. It will do good for VZW, however with the 4G devices coming out soon it's going to be fun.

They had people coming into work yesterday at 3am thinking there was going to be a big rush, however from a few friends..they were waiting anywhere from 15-30 mins for a call and today they started at 6 and by 11 it was just back to basic customer service questions.

It's embarrassing because the turn out was obviously way lower than they expected and prepared for. Not disastrous or anything, but I'm sure they feel a little silly with all the hype and stuff and hardly any shows up.

That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard of. Storing everything in a cloud and streaming it in real time. And everyone thought At&t's network was congested before...yikes.

And what's the point of a smaller/cheaper iPhone? Isn't that what last years model is for...the people that don't want to spend money on the latest and greatest.
