Anyway, I'm looking at the two 4G offerings, the Samsung Epic and the HTC Evo. I got used to the touchscreen typing of the Hero, so I'm not sure that I automatically need the flip out keyboard of the Epic.
Any opinions from people that i have tried both?
I haven't tried either since I'm on Verizon and I don't know anyone on sprint, but the Evo is running HTC Sense UI...which I'm not a fan of. I've got the Fascinate at the moment which is the same as the Epic sans the keyboard and I'm a huge fan of what Samsung did with their UI (as long as you use a different launcher like Launcher Pro). You've been using a Hero tho so you know all about the Sense UI, so if you want the same experience, stick with the Evo...just know that the battery life is horrendous. HTC seems to have trouble with that.
And Fletch...the MyTouch is another HTC phone. As a first smartphone, it'll do you well. I know a bunch of people with them and they love them. Good deal at 100 bucks.
I've actually liked the Sense UI from HTC, and the extra HTC gadgets that they bring.
I've read about the battery life issues, which isn't a huge deal for me as I'm at my desk almost all of the time during the workday and have it plugged in, and at home I have chargers in almost every room (thanks to eBay $1.99 chargers).
I think the AMOLED screen of the Epic might sway me in that direction.

Please don't ever doubt me. If its high end and on Verizon...I will own it. Mark it down. LOL.
And Jon...I really wouldn't let super oled sway you. I really am not all that impressed with it. Sure it has some nice blacks for watching movies but small text is really grainy and almost blurry. I liked the color and Res of the Droid X and Droid 2 quite a bit better. People seem to see the brighter colors and they think its a better screen when in fact its not displaying true colors. Its almost oversaturated which isn't all that good to me. But its all about what each person likes but don't let the technology terns sway you. The form factor is what kept me with the Fascinate not the screen. Its not bad...but i just prefer the lcd on the droid series of phones. Go check one out for yourself of course.

For what it's worth I have had the Evo since launch day and my wife just got the Epic a couple of weeks ago. The Super amoled display makes a huge difference as my wifes phone blows mine away when it comes to the display. I however am getting better battery life on my Evo right now than she gets on her Epic and my Evo also gets better battery life than my friends Incredible. I love my Evo for sure but wish I had that super amoled display. All in all they are both great phones and even if you go with the Epic, you don't have to use that keyboard. It just comes down to the features. The Evo offers a few more things than the Epic.
If my onscreen keyboard is up, how do it get it to slide back off screen? I thought there was a gesture to do this, but can't figure it out and must be choosing the wrong words to find it in google.
Sometimes i'm in an app, the keyboard comes up, and it obscures the whole screen almost when I need to scan around for something.
Well, look at that, the simplest way is the answer. Thanks DB. Duh, I have no idea why I didn't try that?!?!
At least my search in the latest Android guide taught me some other things I didn't know about, like swiping up to the top of the keyboard to pop up a row of numbers......!!!
No 4G = No thanks. It's not enough of an upgrade over my current DX. Dual core and an upgraded screen is nice and all...but really, no LTE chip?
Droid Bionic is where it's at...or the Thunderbolt if you need it in the next two months. Oh and apparently if you want to do data and voice at the same time...it's almost ready for prime time on Verizon. The Thunderbolt will be the first phone available that can do it.
As expected (by me, obviously not WCO)...all rumors point to a continued $29.99 unlimited smartphone plan even on the almighty LTE 4G. Can't wait till the 14th or 24th for the Thunderbolt. I'm in.

Scott, I almost pulled the trigger on the Iphone early this AM, but held off remembering you told me there was some other good stuff coming. From what you've heard about the Thunderbolt, would you think it will be better than the Iphone? Forgive me for my ignorance my friend, I have had my LG flip phone for like 3 years now...and am ready to move on up!

There are four phones coming out in the next three months that are better than the iPhone on Verizon. Especially since the iPhone is still on Verizon's old 3G network. The HTC Thunderbolt should be out in the next two weeks or so, the Samsung i550 4G, the LG 4G offering and the Droid Bionic. All of them are on the new 4G LTE network at the same exact cost as 3G. They will be much more future proofed when compared to the iPhone 4. The iPhone is a great phone, don't get me wrong...but the Android offerings are much more impressive from a technology standpoint. I'm getting a Thunderbolt when it comes out if you want to wait for my review.
There are also a few dual core Motorola phones (Droid X2, Droid 3) and the HTC Incredible 2 which are all 3G phones but still functionally outperform an iPhone...so there's that. LOL.
Anyone have a Windows phone? I've been looking for something for my wife that will get her hooked into my Zune Pass and am wondering just how well integrated they are.
About a month ago I got a Samsung Epic 4g based on db's recommendation. Utterly love it. Brilliant big screen, excellent enormous keyboard and really top-notch build quality. I was a big fan of the WebOS on my Pre, and there are some things I still miss as I use the Android OS. OTOH, the Pre was just so flimsy compared to this thing. I put a Body Glove case around the thing and it's satisfyingly hefty but still pocket-ready.
Sprint's 4g service is completely awesome...when it's available. Coverage is spotty, but so worth it when it works.
I'd definitely recommend it.

So I have been a Blackberry user for years (not by choice), and have also been a T-Mobile user for years, and that will not change. However, I now have the ability to finally go to an Android phone. Can someone tell me any reason why the new Samsung Galaxy S™ 4G would not be a no-brainer decision given the fact that my carrier will not change from T-Mobile? Seems like an awesome phone with the only question being why they limited the memory expansion compared to the original Vibrant.

Galaxy S 4G is badass...but it isn't really a no brainer. I'd definitely prefer the Nexus S even though it's not 4G (tho T-Mobile is using the fake 4G anyway, UMTS & HSPA+ which isn't that big of a speed upgrade over 3G) I almost switched to T-Mobile to try one out, but their network here in LA is terrible. The main reason why I'd go Nexus S over the 4G is because it's running stock Gingerbread...it doesn't have an overlay of software on it like the Galaxy S does. This is a VERY good thing if you keep your phone for 2 years because you will get all the latest and greatest software updates directly from Google A LOT faster than you would from Samsung on their Galaxy 4G. I also prefer the look of stock android (gingerbread is just the version, 2.3) over the UI that companies like HTC/Motorola/Samsung put on them.
Here's the Nexus S if you haven't seen it before...and you can get it at Best Buy for the same price as the Galaxy 4G.
I'd heard that Samsung is among the worst as far as updating new Android OS versions for existing owners.
HTC is suppose to be much better.
Also complaints about GPS on the Galaxy line and about inferior build quality. Some people seem to prefer the Nexus One build quality over the Nexus S.
T-Mobile G2 got good reviews but there may be something newer now.
Supposedly you can buy phones from T-Mob unlocked so you don't have to sign a contract. But they have those funky AWS frequencies so your phone may or may not support 3G bands on AT&T or on overseas network, if you ever switch carrier to AT&T or travel overseas.
Nexus OG was better because it's made of metal for the most part. The Samsung line of phones definitely aren't as well built, but I never had a problem when I had my Galaxy S on Verizon. As for software updates, that's what I said...thanks for repeating it.
My opinion still holds true:
Nexus S > Galaxy S 4G > Nexus OG
The G2 is sweet if you want a keyboard, but otherwise it makes the phone too bulky.
