Thats good to know. I had no idea you could rig the old hard drive on the new slim unit. When the inevitable happens to my elite, the 4gb slim looks like the way to go.

and there goes my 360 Elite...

Launch 360 died in 18 months, and at the time MS wouldn't replace it for free. EBay'd it and bought a PS3. In 2008 I gave in and bought an Elite because I wanted to play NHL with you boys. Had it until yesterday, when after a few hours playing Kinect with the kids it went caput.

Called Microsoft this morning, and they're not even sending 'coffins' anymore, it becomes my chore to get packing materials etc.

Just pissed, so I'm waiting on a call back from a manager. Give me a slim, or my money back on the console, Kinect etc so I can go on my way and stay a PS3 gamer. Love the 360 for it's function, but this is absurd, especially during the holidays.

Microsoft knowingly sells a shoddy unreliable product and pays more in replacements than they would if they just swapped everyone to a new unit that !should! Be reliable.

I feel your console pain and I couldnt agree more ..... It is pretty disgraceful.

Both PS3's still work...cant say that about the three 360s.

I live in SW Florida where it's nice and toasty and i'm running on the 360 Pro with the updated heatsinks and it's going on 2.5 years with no problems. That's my third 360 and it's the longest lasting one partly because when I got it I installed the Nyko Intercooler that plugs into the wall. I think that has helped a lot.

But while the PS3 is more reliable they are also prone to breaking. This gen has been utter crap for reliable systems. My most reliable system has been the Wii. It's been rock solid for close to 4 years only because it's been used maybe 10 times. :)

I had to have both my PS3 replaced, so they are not perfect.

I have 3 360's, the original had to be replaced twice before I scraped it and got an arcade. The 2 Arcades and the slim have never had an issue. (knocks on wood)

Agreed the arcades solved a lot of the issues with the first and second run 360's. The Slim has a redesigned cooling system. Where would MS be right now if they had designed the original 360's like the Arcades and Slims?

Have two 360's...and original 20gb unit and an arcade unit which I've had for 4 years. The only problem I've ever had is the disc drive on the original and that was due to wear and tear from my kids. I've never had any other issues at all and that Arcade unit is turned on quite a bit and it's in a compacted area and gets very warm. Very happy with both of my 360's and will be picking up a 3rd here around christmas.

Those of you that currently have the new 4GB Xbox console, do you think the storage is enough or do you feel the need to upgrade to a new Hard Drive?

4GB is not even close to enough. You're better off getting the 120gb...just so that you can install games to the HD. It decreases loading times and it's a hellova lot quieter.

You can now use an external USB flash drive if you don't want to buy a hard drive but like DB mentioned there are benefits to buying a hard drive. Another benefit is when you buy and install DLC.

MS didn't come through with any sort of help, but I shipped off my Elite 120Gb, had it repaired, and then went and bought a 250Gb Slim yesterday. I will eBay my 360, COD, Kinect Adventures, and Kinect (got the bundle with another Kinect) and hope to get back around $300. A $100 upgrade would be great.

That said, the SLIM is terrific, absolutely what the XBox should have been from the start. Smaller, lighter, FAR quieter, cooler and (apparently) better constructed. I played for a few hours last night and you couldn't hear that it was on, and it was hot on the side, but still much cooler than the older unit and clearly far more efficient at moving air around.

Now I'm just waiting to see if my neighbor wants my old XBox and Kinect in exchange for his PS3 Slim, so that I can sell my 60Gb PS3 instead and end up with both "slim" units.

I keep them in an entertainment console that is only open in front, so the cooler they run the better.

I highly recommend this

http://cgi.ebay.com/AV-Cabinet-Home-The ... 53e537e60a

I bought a version of this 3 years ago when I was having my theatre room built and haven't had any issues since. I also got some other fans I no longer see which sucks the hot air out as the cooler air is being pushed in.

And DOWN GOES #4! This is ridiculous. Thankfully I paid for the replacement plan from Best Buy so I walked in with my 360 Arcade (old model), and walked out with the 250gb Slim and a transfer cable for 120 bucks. I'll sell my old HD and cable for around 40-50 bucks on ebay along with the wireless network adapter for another 30 or so and have spent 40 bucks to upgrade from 120 to 250 along with the new model. Holy crap this thing is quiet...as Sport said, this is how it should have been in the first place. I'm very impressed with the new unit.

DB how long did your 360 Arcade last? My 360 Pro is going on 3 years and it's still holding up thanks to the Nyko Intercooler.

Nobody's passing me. I'm on number 8 or 9. I've had so many fail I've lost count. :p

I am very happy with the slim though. It's whisper quiet. Just don't set anything on the top vents, they put out a ton of heat.

Bought the latest on November 19, 2009...so a little over a year. Awesome. It didn't completely fail, I just started getting freezes constantly (especially with Madden and NCAA 11 for some reason) and some pixellation that shouldn't be there...so it was on it's way out and didn't want to wait and since I had the protection plan...might as well get the latest and greatest. :)

True. I would have been happier if myself and the rest of the community who've had their 360's die could have just walked away and thumbed a big FU to Microsoft. Two things keep that from happening:

1. Give them the razor, sell the blades. Consoles are the razor and the games are the blades. I have enough money tied up in games, accessories, and add-on/content for my 360 that letting it stay dead is far more punishment to me that to MS.

2. Live. Enough said. MS got the online ecosystem so right that the PS3, Onlive and other options just aren't satisfying.

And you can probably add Kinect to that list.

Now let's see what happens in 2 years when the next round of consoles arrive.

No idea...but I would assume so since it was so new. Didn't the Jasper's come out in August of 2009?

I forgot the timeline but the first revision were the ones with the new heatsinks "Zephyr"? Anyway they still used the same chips as the first gen 360's. My current 360 Pro has that revision and has been going strong for close to 3 years.

The next update were the Jaspers. They started out with the Arcades 512MB internal memory. You could spot those easily by their MFG date and the lower amp power supply. Those are pretty solid cause they use the cooler running CPU's and GPU's.

After that came the Slims.

Yeah, that's what my Arcade was because it had the internal memory. I do remember that. Like I said, it didn't totally fail, but I wanted to swap it while I still had my protection plan and the new Slims have been out for a while so they've gotten that manufacturing process down.

I am on my third but it has been going strong for well over 2 years now. I was thinking of getting the new 250g slim but have a question. I bought a 120g HD a long time ago to install my games to, etc. Does it matter if some of my content on my 120g drive has been transferred once already? Can stuff be transferred to a new hard drive more than once I guess is what I am asking? And the slims come with a transfer cable included?
