I purchased Scrabble and Reckless Racing. I can't believe Scrabble was only $.99!!! That's insane. I've wanted to buy it for so long, but $9.99 seemed too expensive. Has anyone played Snood? Gonna read up on Osmosis.

Can't believe that my wife and I can use our iPhones for tile racks when playing Scrabble on the iPad. Cool? Eerie? The jury is out on this one.

I got Snood as well. Pretty much exactly what you'd expect. Generally polished product, with a few different game types (normal, puzzle, time trial, adventure--haven't tried that one yet).

Very cool (and eerie)! One of the first 'show off' things I break out on the iPad.

I've been praising Reckless Racing forever in this thread. Funny how you guys are just discovering it now.
One of my favorite iPhone games...period.

I just grabbed NFS-Hot Pursuit and and suprised and how fun and playable it is. Of course it's nowhere near the 360 game, but its very good for an iphone game.

Looks like they released a free version of Scrabble to compete with Words with Friends free version.

But you can dismiss the ads instantly.

The only thing is, it has too many aids compared to WWF, with a dictionary and a list of 2-letter words. It also shows you the matrix combos you can get, breaking down each of the points or previewing the points you get.

If you achieve certain milestones it offers to post them on your FB wall, so it's kind of an achievement I suppose.

A seriously cool game I downloaded for 99c is "Cause of Death".

It is a detective book/game in the vain of choose your own adventure.

I am on the 4th chapter of the "Mask Maker" serial killer in San Francisco and it is good fun.

All EA games are .99. I picked up Madden just to see it. It's really uncomfortable to play it on the iPad.

I also bought World of Goo. For 9.99, I can't recommend it. It's a fun puzzle game but I don't think it does anything better than other, cheaper puzzle games. I know it has a console history but I think it's an average puzzle game. (Also on the iPad).

Since this is a game thread, I'll only quickly mention a news app called TweetMag. It turns all those links into articles for view on the iPad. But it doesn't just pull up your twitter feed it pulls together other categories of tweets that aren't on your friends list. I spent an hour last night reading articles that I wouldn't have otherwise found.

Got Scrabble, Boggle, Yahtzee and NFS: Hot Pursuit all for 99 cents for the iPad. My wife loves boggle she is playing it non-stop. We played scrabble a few times already and pass and play Yahtzee with the kids is great.

I really want to get risk but it's $7 and Monopoly is $9. I really love these pass and play board game options. If you haven't tried Small World give it a shot. I hope the next device is an iGaming Table. I'd love something like that.

I'm working on an iPad version of Combat Commander but I doubt I'll be able to sell it or even list it. I'm just doing it for self use and also as a way of learning to program for the device.

Just look at the top downloads. Things like NY Times, ABC are going to be obviously popular. Try out Angry Birds, Words with Friends HD Free.

Fotopedia is also popular.

Depends on the categories of things you're interested in, obviously some free games, some media, travel-related stuff, cookbooks, etc.

I consider Good Reader an essential buy but that's not free. The Nook app if you like to read is good.

Scrabble is interesting because you can play online (in addition to pass and play), either as guest or log in with FB account. You can dismiss the ads easily on the free iPhone version (much easier than in WWF). You can play 3 or 4-player games, unlike WWF. Tricky thing is you have to start the multiplayer games on FB and then you can play it on iPhone. I couldn't join any games on FB but could create them. You kind of have achievements in that if you have some big scores, you can post to FB if you want.

Too bad they don't have this kind of setup for Risk or Monopoly as well, which are Wifi/Bluetooth or Pass and Play only.

I also saw Risk, but couldn't fathom paying 7 for it. Did see scrabble. Yahzee would be fun to have.

Interesting how the App. store has conditioned us on pricing.

The actual board games these days go for like $20 or more now? $10 for these apps. isn't a bad price but we're used to sales and/or other good games selling for 99 cents.

I think what prevents me from buying is the app reviews. Nothing makes less sense then app reviews on itunes. I'll see an app with a 4 star rating and go read reviews and the first dozen are about how bad the game sucks. Maybe it's because when you delete an app it asks you to rate it, I don't know. Anyway that's what scared me off Risk, however today several co-workers told me they bought it and it is a good game so I'll add that one to my list tonight.

Unfortunately the app store reviews are worthless. Most are either '5 stars, great app', or '1 star, should be free or cheaper.'. Other common brilliant comments are 'once i beat the game, there's not much to do.' You'd think that someone could make a useful comment like 'this app does does x well, but y poorly.'

Also, upon further reflection for the EA games, thumbs up to the NFS games, mirrors edge, simcity, and scrabble for $1. Don't care for madden and fifa at all though. Trivial pursuit and sudoku (iPhone) also do the job if you are are so inclined.

Other general app recs:
-atomic web browser- more options and features than safari for $1
-splashtop- remote desktop app that plays media (including flash video) extremely well. Use it all the time to connect to my pc and watch flash video online and other video files on my pc while around the house or in bed
-vlc -free, plays most video files, removing the need to convert them for the iPad
-free news-- USA today, drudge report, CNN, espn score center, ny times
-free time wasters- solitaire, freecell, minesweeper, harbor master hd
-angry birds- best ipad game IMO and worth a few bucks
-other free things - Netflix (use this a ton), abc player, weatherbug

Never mind, just noticed there's an update for the game that allows you to play as a racer vs cops plus some other things...

Bought Virtual Pool for $3 yesterday.

I haven't played it too much, and it does have a career mode, but it appears to be a no-frills game. On the table however, it's good old virtual pool though.

Naples - is it called Virtual Pool Online made by Celeris? I see it is on sale for a buck now. Just wondering if it is the same game since you bought it yesterday for $3. Kind of a late xmas sale if so.

I agree with Naples that the reviews are pretty much worthless as guides to what to purchase and what to avoid - from the quality of the writing they're probably written mostly by teenagers and pre-teens.

BTW, very cool to read that you're having a go at putting together a version of Combat Commander. Recently GMT have announced plans for some pc versions of their boardgames. When you have something ready you might want to drop them a note - they might be more receptive than you'd expect to authorizing an electronic version of Combat Commander for wider release.

Best wishes,

Doug

I got Virtual Pool HD for iPad by Celeris, I think for $3 (may be $4 on further review).

Virtual Pool Online may be the lower-res iPhone version of the same game.
