It's a GT game. Not sure what the masses were expecting. The driving is really, really good with a G25. The AI is just as dumb as always--braking early, cutting you into the grass, etc. But if it changes as you go further, that's interesting. I'm only like level 15 so far. Haven't had a ton of time to level up yet. But it's pretty much what I expected.

Okay, this is pretty hilarious. Giant Bomb has a "Quick Look" at GT5. And by quick look, I mean and they are almost beaten into submission by the game before even getting into a car. Seriously, this may be the worst interface ever designed for a game.

Lesson to be learned: Make sure the time is set right on your PS3.

That's because you don't need AI for online play. Besides in GT5 the AI is more weak than robo.
But continuing to work on online features would be them continuing to mail it in, instead of fixing the AI. :P

Just for PK, from the GT5 forums

How to get a gold trophy in 3 seconds: Go to National License Test B5 and turn right and bump to the wall, is as fast an easy as it seems.

They had five years to fix the AI, so in essence they have been "mailing it in" since GT4....

If you want to have a clean race with your pal, the best thing right now is to play the 2 player mode. Online has too many puzzles left to put together and until the patch comes out, having your own party is your best bet or going into 'Open Lounge'. But even in OL, there's no matchmaking mode or ranking system yet. Being stuck while a race is under way and unable to join or quit for that matter is irritating to say the least.

My pal and I did however enjoy the 2 player mode and along "Free Run", we had a good time racing GT5.

So, is this just not worth being at all? So much negativity, but it looks good. Buying advice appreciated.

If you have a 360 then Forza 3 is the better, more polished more complete racer. If you only have a PS3 then yeah I would get it but it will probably drop in price in a few months. You can read thru my impressions. In short it's not as bad as they say and not as great as it was hyped. It's basically in beta form at the moment so it's a work in progress.

The good news is Sony wants PD to keep improving GT5 but there's quite a ways to go as many things are broke or missing from GT5 and some things are just plain sloppy in the game.

Someone made a list of what's currently wrong, not right or broken in GT5. Gawd knows what else has been uncovered. :P

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are so many elements within Gran Turismo 5 that show no common sense, are missing or are a step back from Gran Turismo 5: Prologue that I’ve decided to try and list them. Most of these are minor issues, but there are a lot of them. After all those years in development, and delay upon delay to smooth out the game, it’s hard to understand why this following list is so long.

Regarding GT Life:

-Unable to use a stored PS3 image for the avatar

-Unable to change the avatar clothing once chosen

Regarding tuning:

-Unable to fit parts that are in your possession in the tune menu

-Unable to store tune setups under different profiles, such as Prologue’s A-B-C

Regarding the Parts Shop:

-Unable to buy brake upgrades

Regarding Car Delivery:

-Unable to select and receive all cars waiting at once

Regarding GT Auto

-Available rims are limited to certain cars

-Unable to set rim-size

-Unable to fully review a colour on a car

-Paint colour items are one use only

-Unable to paint Aero Parts

-Rims and body parts have no stated weight or performance benefits

Regarding online racing:

-Unable to invite friends to your Lounge

-Unable to stop non-hosts to start the race

-No freerun-specific online mode

-No tournaments

-Unable to create events, or store various lobby settings to a selectable profile

-No Polyphony Digital sanctioned events like in Prologue

Regarding Arcade Mode:

-Unable to select any car from the GT Life garage

-Unable to select penalty level

-Unable to select opponent number

-Unable to select opponent cars

-Missing online leaderboards for timetrials

-Unable to load online replays

Regarding the Course Maker:

-Unable to create point-to-point races

-Unable to isolate a sector and alter it without it affecting other sectors

-Unable to set the track length

-Unable to set the elevation changes

Regarding weather:

-Unable to sync the weather to current real life situation

-Weather forecast missing

-Unable to set rain probability

-Unable to set rain intensity

Regarding time-change:

-Unable to sync the time to current real life situation

-Unable to set time in GT Life Practice or Arcade mode

-Unable to set the time on Course Maker track other than between the set times for each theme.

-Missing a comprehensible unit for the time-compression in online lobbies.

Regarding head tracking:

-Unable to use in GT Life

-Unable to use during pit stops

Regarding pit stops:

-Unable to change camera view

-Unable to look left and right in cockpit view

Regarding replays:

-Unable to fast forward or reverse the replay

-Unable to look left and right in various views

-Unable to zoom in on the TV-camera angles

-Unable to show the HUD without the other replay features being on screen

-Unable to store or load telemetry

-Unable to gift replays to friends

Regarding the options menu:

-Race display

-Unable to set the map to Prologue style

-Unable to hide online notices such as people joining, leaving, chatting

-Unable to fully hide the HUD

-Demo

-Unable to select which items to feature in demo mode, such as museum, the intro movie or online replays

-Units/Languages

-Unable to select units for speed, power, measurements

-Change Button Assignments

-Unable to copy a button layout from one controller input to another

-Unable to store controller layouts to a selectable profile

-Audio

-Muting Race Background music mutes the trophy music as well

-Unable to mute split-time bleeps

-Miscellaneous

-Unable to set button and paddle sensitivity, deadzones

-Mission option to turn off auto-save

-Mission option to import cars from Prologue

Regarding the user interface:

-Unnecessary prompt for an OK about switching the PS3 off during HDD access

-Different styles for the same buttons in various parts of the game

-Missing Restart Race button on A-Spec & B-Spec race results page

-Exiting from race results page turns to the A/B-Spec overview, instead of the pre-race lobby

-Pausing the game mid-race, returning from the submenu ‘Quick Options’ will un-pause the game

-Unable to turn the Driving Line on or off mid-race

-Back button Circle points the mouse to the back button, but requires the Cross button to exit a menu

-Tracks with different time or weather settings should not appear as separate tracks

-Invalidating a lap in Time Trial should not cause more than 1 notice about it to appear

Regarding various inconsistencies:

-Unable to turn on dimmed / full beam light on during the daytime on premium cars

-Unable to switch off the wipers in rain/snow situations

-Able to photograph standard cars in replays, but not in Photo Travel

-The Top Gear track comes without a reasonably priced car, or choice of a standing start time-trial

-Each car needs the traction control, ABS, etc. settings to be re-set

-No telemetry or Datalogger available for standard cars

-Data logger unable to store reference data

-Data logger unable to compare laps

Regarding damage:

-Visual damage should be an option throughout the game that can be toggled on and off

-Mechanical damage should be an option throughout the game that can be toggled on and off

-Currently level 17 and my cars did not receive any dirt (making GT Auto carwash obsolete)

-Currently level 17 and not encountered any mechanical damage

-Damage does not seem to carry over from races

Regarding graphics:

-Shadows have course jagged edges on the cars, causing a lot of flickering. Some cars seem to be affected more than others

-Shadows on the ground switch between various forms depending on camera distance. Ranging from Prologue style shadows (various shadow intensities overlapping each other) to blocky unaliased single layer shadows

-Very noticeable pop-in on some tracks

-Very noticeable screen tear

-Quality of textures and models amongst standard cars is far and between

-Quality of textures and models on various tracks is far and between

I haven't posted here in eons, but I just got the game today and came to share my disappointment of GT5's implementation of Nascar. Frankly, I wasn't expecting much when it was announced, but I wonder why they bothered if it was going to be done so half-assed.

Primary complaints:
- Car handling seems too twitchy and generally off, at least with a controller
- Engine sounds are just bad bad bad
- It seems cars run unrestricted at Daytona (I was running 212+ in the draft), or the sim model is way off from reality.
- Only two real Nascar tracks as far as I can tell

To be fair, stock car racing doesn't really fit in a GT game, but still, and I was going to play the crap out of the game anyway, it is just kind of a bummer how poorly Nascar is simulated in 'The Real Driving Simulator'.

I am having a lot of fun playing GT5. I guess I got the game mainly for the driving experience, and to that end GT5 has not disappointed. Sure, the AI is not the greatest, but it is definitely better than in past GT games. Right now I am using a controller and finding the handling to be the best I have encountered with a controller. I am going to try the HKS racing controller just for the heck of it once it is released soon in the US, but the standard DS3 is yielding good lap times for me. Despite all the chirping about problems with the game, it is still a better game IMO than Forza 3 in terms of realism of driving and handling. I put in an absurd number of hours with Forza 3 and liked it a lot, but for my money GT5 is the better game by quite a bit when it comes to the car on the track.

As far as the actual driving i'll give you that Toon, it's represented better in GT5 but Forza 3 is the overall better package when you factor in (AI, Customization i.e. real mfg's, Online, Real Car Count, Real World Tracks). But I do enjoy GT5 and at least Sony wants PD to smooth out the rough edges and elevate GT5 from beta to a fully fleshed retail product.

To me GT5 is a beta product.

I wouldn't say FM3 is a better package necessarily. It all boils down to what you are looking for. I do miss the real world tracks of FM3, however the AI is not something I would say is a winner because in both GT3 and FM3 the AI cars are essentially nothing more than place markers. For me, both FM3 and GT5 are more about the driving experience, giving the games a "me vs the track" feel due to the lack of realistic AI in both games. Therefore, I can see how some people could consider GT5 a better package depending on what they want in terms of tracks, car selection, control, handling, etc. I would fall into that camp at this point, but I realize the game is still fresh to me. Only time will tell if it can hold a candle to FM3 in longevity. That will be the test to the better overall package from my POV. I put in well over 150 hours in FM3, so we shall see how I feel about GT5 when I reach that point.
