The evolution of sports on the field/court is so under-discussed, particularly considering how much scrutiny is placed on sports. IMO, it just demonstrates how superficial so much of the coverage is.

Years ago I read an article by Bill James about how the changing bodies and skills of NBA players had rendered the dimensions of a standard basketball court obsolete. I thought it was crazy, but after watching with his observations in mind I've come to agree with him.

Stephen Jay Gould did some amazing work on the death of the .400 hitter in baseball, and how excellence regresses to the mean in all sports as systems mature.

Virtually nobody in the traditional sports media even thinks about this stuff and instead we get gallons of ink spilled regurgitating cliche after cliche.

Good point, having a dude who pushes close to 7ft. then add his wingspan trying to stuff a ball in a 10ft basket just isn't fair. It would be better if they raised the height of the basket so it would be more difficult to do slam dunks etc. But today's sports is filled with too many Oh Moments for ESPN for that to happen.

I see the refs are back to their usual self. Big Ben fumbles the ball, Miami recovers in the Endzone, hand the ball to the ref. Pittsburgh gets the ball back, 4th and 1 on the 1 yard line and kick the ball for the go ahead score.

Nice !

That was horrendous. How do you f*** that up after you watch it on replay for 15 minutes? Insane the amount of incompetency on that singular play.

Thinsg are definately getting better for the Rams.

I know they lost by blowing a 14 point lead to a very shitty team but it really is kinda cool to have a heart breaking loss again.

LETS GO RAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know. At first I thought XXXIV was ragging on the refs. It's almost like the NFL has turned into the WWE. Did they write the script? OK we want a close game but Pitts will win this week.

I always rag on the refs! ...Im still pretty pissed about the phantom holding call in the 1976 NFC championship game!

But ya...that thing in Miami was part of the very NBA like cheating going on in the NFL this year.

What gets me is you clearly see a Dolphin defender fall on the ball. They break up the pile and a Dolphin gives the ball to the ref. Then Dan Dork Deirdorf on CBS says, yeah but it's really inconclusive what goes on in a pile we all know how that goes. Excuse Dork, a Dolphin fell on the ball with another Dolphin they broke up the pile and a Dolphin had the ball. What else do you want to make it conclusive. makes me sick how the NFL is officiating. Now i'm starting to wonder if the whole blown play calling by Golden boy Ed Hochuli was all planned from the start, sheesh.

The refs should of determined who recovered the fumble they were too quick to call that a TD, they blew that one and the "rapist" scores another victory.

Really getting horrendous watching the officiating, flipping through games I saw easily a dozen terrible calls. Cutler broke the plain on his fumbler, Bills player clearly had his forward progressed stopped and many, many others.

Correct ! Based on your logic the Dolphins should have been given the ball. It was clear from all angles one Dolphin picked up the loose ball and a second Dolphin joined him. That part was clear irregardless of what happened in the pile. AND a Dolphin gave the ball to the ref when everyone was separated.

So what was clear was a Dolphin defender pounced on the ball and a Dolphin came out of the pile with the ball. How can you f##k that up???

It's rock bottom for us Bills' fans. 0-6. Only winless team in the NFL. Today was just painful to watch since they had a decent Ravens' team on the ropes on the road.

At least the decision to ditch Edwards for Fitzpatrick looks smart. There is a sliver of hope.

Considering how weak the division is, Hawks will win advance to the playoffs next week. 8) Seriously, I like how the D has toughen up against the opponents running game, SEA must be in the top 5 against the run and another solid game by Lynch and Hasselbeck.

More crying over a Steelers win -- never gets old hearing it. :D Also never gets old seeing all those Terrible Towels waving in an opponent's stadium. Looked more like they were playing in Pittsburgh than in Miami at a couple of points.

Saw some of the Bills game -- kept wondering how they were 0-6 because that Fitzpatrick guy and the receivers looked great. Then saw them lose it in OT and had my answer. I was also surprised to see they hadn't had a QB throw for more than 300 yards in a game in almost 5 years -- that's rough.

Wasn't too surprised seeing the browns beat New Orleans today. They've got a lot better team than people give them credit for.
