Didn't realize Kings of Leon have a new one coming out in October but am pumped to hear it (love those guys). The video for the single went up on their site today:

New album coming September 14th from psychedelic band the Black Angels entitled "Phosphene Dream." Here's a track from it:

Nice one Scoop! The last minute of that just smokes. I'll have to give it a listen and see if they hit they rave-up style consistently - I'm a sucker for that vibe.
Speaking of psychedelic rock, the latest from Quest For Fire entitled Lights From Paradise hit a few weeks ago and I can't stop listening to it. Here's the opener - this youtube poster has put the whole album up if you want a broader sample - they change it up all over the place so no one song is the perfect representative of their sound.

Re: OT: New Music?
Hard to believe, but the three best new releases I've heard in the last two or three weeks are from "old dudes:" John Mellencamp, Los Lobos and Paul Weller.

PK, glad to hear you're enjoying the new Mellencamp. I've always been a big fan, but I'm digging it, too. I also think the backstory of where the songs were recorded (hotel room where Robert Johnson played, Savannah church/site of underground railroad, and Sun Studio with a picture of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley looking on) is pretty damn cool.

Re: OT: New Music?
GT: I was really skeptical of the whole stripped-down, mono aspect of the recording. First, Mellencamp has done stripped-down records recently. Plus mono? In 2010?
But the damn thing just works in ways that are hard for me to describe. Beautiful in its simplicity and directness, perhaps? Plus Mellencamp's voice at this age has just the right amount of fatigue and gravel to work really well in such a sparse, mono recording.

I'm digging that Quest for Fire EZ. Something I can easily zone out on and just chill. Good stuff.

Saw Rush this past weekend. Amazing show, especially since they played all of Moving Pictures in sequence. For three guys who are approaching 60, they played with a lot of energy and for about three hours. One of the best concerts I've seen.

Re: OT: New Music?
I can't believe I'm writing this but I am very impressed with the new Linkin Park album. I liked their debut well enough but never really got into their 2 follow-up releases. This new one sounds nothing like anything they've done before and comes off almost like a new band. Every so often you'll hear a little old Linkin Park shine through but in general it has a very techno-ish vibe. It's very polished and mature. I guess it's really split the LP fanbase down the middle. Half like it and half feels like they sold out. I was never a big fan so the change in sound doesn't bother me one bit. Give it a listen.

The new superchunk is a hoot. I probably spent all summer of my junior year in college drinking cheap beer & listening to superchunk. it's a nice surprise to hear them back.

The new Mavis Staples album, produced by Jeff Tweedy and featuring one of the finest living blues guitar stylists, Rick Holmstrom, is...sublime. Amazing record! My favorite of the year so far, bar none.

I never got into their earlier stuff, but I'm absolutely DIGGING the new Deerhunter album, "Halcyon Digest." Quieter than the previous releases and with more hints of pop and shoegaze, at least from what I can remember from the band's earlier albums.

I like it, too, but not as much as Microcastle (which was my fav album of 2008). Maybe with more listens. Regardless, good stuff!pk500 wrote:I never got into their earlier stuff, but I'm absolutely DIGGING the new Deerhunter album, "Halcyon Digest." Still liking the new Superchunk, but they should have put it out in June. It's a great BBQ album!

In faux-new music news, the reissue of David Bowie's Station to Station that came out yesterday is outstanding. My favorite Bowie album finally with the original mix as released in 1976, and with a blistering two-disc live show from the tour that followed. Not to be slept on if you like that era of Bowie at all.

I went to see Roger Waters last night. I thought it was AWESOME, but don't take my word for it, here's a review of last night's Cleveland show:

Went and saw Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & The Cairo Gang tonight. Best show I've seen this year I think (and that's saying a lot). Simply stunning. The sound in that room was incredible. Wow.

Going to see Pavement, Sonic Youth & No Age at the Hollywood Bowl tomorrow. Hard to imagine that line-up at the bowl 12 years ago.
edit: very cool with the Will Oldham clip. Great & odd talent.

Re: OT: New Music?
Anyone who likes some good hip hop needs to check out the new EP by Atmosphere. It's called "To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy" and it's fantastic. Completely different from a lot of their recent stuff. It's a lot more musical...they used a live band to record all of the music so it's kind of Roots-ish in that regard but with a lot more complex and enjoyable lyrics. Slug is in fine form here.

Re: OT: New Music?
Yeah, picked that up at the weekend. The live show is actually better than the remastered version of 'Stage', which was a '78 show if I remember correctly - though whether it's better than Santa Monica '72 depends on your preference for his material.Spooky wrote:Awesome. Re: OT: New Music?
Off to see the classic mid-90s GBV lineup perfom in Chicago.
I can't really describe what it was like to see these guys around '95-'96. A bunch of kinda older-looking hick drinking buddies singing in fake British accents playing these weird two-minute (or less) British Invasion/psychedelic/punk songs. Loudly and very drunkenly.
And the songs were the best songs you ever heard.

Re: OT: New Music?
Speaking of great songs, I've got to throw out another mention of Mumford & Sons -- who I'm glad to see are getting more and more exposure. To me the amazing thing about these guys is that, since they released their debut album back in February, they've continued to introduce another 8 or so new songs at their concerts, all of which are as great as everything on their album. Hopefully, all of these new songs (Feel the Tide, Banjolin Song, To Darkness, Nothing is Written, etc.) are going to make it onto their second album, whenever it's released. In the meantime, here's the newest one (still untitled) they played at the Hammersmith in London a couple of days ago. It follows the distinctly-Mumford formula of starting off mellow before exploding into passion at the end. Like the other 18 or so songs in their quickly growing repertoire, I love it and can't wait to see them at their sold-out show in Atlanta next month.

Re: OT: New Music?
I got into these guys really late (prob about '04, and on the strength of a recommendation from this forum), and to this day still have no idea how Bob Pollard comes up with so many memorable songs. In my universe, they'd be megastars.AJColossal wrote:Off to see the classic mid-90s GBV lineup perfom in Chicago.
