Best actor is somebody few people have seen or noticed, not one of the box office names.

One dude I forgot to add to the "acting greats under 50" crowd: Benicio Del Toro. Dude steals just about every scene in just about every movie he's in.

You can never call Leo a pretty boy again after seeing him in Blood Diamond. Awesome role, probably my favorite performance by him.
Also really enjoyed movies like the Aviator and Gangs of NY. He was really good in The Departed, though I wasn't crazy about the movie as a whole.

Johnny Depp is good, but I don't think as versatile as Leo. Love Sean Penn as well. Great actor! Another one who is great in everything....pk500 wrote:I'd put Johnny Depp and Sean Penn in his class. I will definitley be going to see Inception soon.

OK, OK. Can I change it to the best under 40?LAking wrote:I would agree that Damon is just as good if not better than DiCaprio. I'm not even sure Dicaprio is all that great to begin with. I could probably think of a number of actors that are better than him. Off the top of my head I can think of Javier Bardem, Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Or how about Sam Rockwell, who generally flies under the radar. DiCaprio simply does the higher profile, big budget, semi-serious films that get Oscar consideration, plus he's got the star power from his teenage heart throb days.10spro wrote:Recently watched 'Green Zone', and I would add Matt Damon to the under 50 list.
BTW, go see The Kids are Alright. It's the best movie I've seen this year by a long shot. I have yet to see Inception.

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
I like DiCaprio but Depp is probably the most versatile actor working, in any age group. You could hand him any kind of script and he could probably pull off the role.
For actors under 50, I'd include Ralph Finnes in the discussion. And Clooney for that matter -- not a great range like the others, but he's exceptional at what he does and has been in some of my favorite roles (Three Kings, Ocean's 11, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Out of Sight).
Don Cheadle's another one, and I think Casey Affleck is on his way.

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Good call on Ralph Fiennes. I would have mentioned Clooney but I kind of figured he was 50 by now. Cheadle popped into my head as well. Loved Casey Affleck in The Assassination of Jesse James but he needs more time before I'm ready to put him near the top. For the record, I think Depp is a bit overrated but still a good actor.Brando70 wrote:I like DiCaprio but Depp is probably the most versatile actor working, in any age group. Oh, and Christian Bale is up there as well.

Agree with you on Depp as a spot above DiCaprio at least for today and on Casey A being on his way up.Brando70 wrote:I like DiCaprio but Depp is probably the most versatile actor working, in any age group. You could hand him any kind of script and he could probably pull off the role.

I agree with that too. Anyone else just love him in American Psycho?LAking wrote: Oh, and Christian Bale is up there as well.
Enough of the sausage fest

Oh, he was a bad boy in AP. Classic stuff, enjoyed it so much that I bought the BR version of the movie as well.XXXIV wrote:Agree with you on Depp as a spot above DiCaprio at least for today and on Casey A being on his way up.Brando70 wrote:I like DiCaprio but Depp is probably the most versatile actor working, in any age group. Diane Lane, thank you very much. Fantastic actress, and the hottest, smartest, most sophisticated MILF in Hollywood today.XXXIV wrote:Enough of the sausage fest....What about the women? ScarJo? mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm so very tasty.

Spurred by her smoldering, sensual role in "Unfaithful," I'm sure! If any guy didn't find Lane's performance in that movie stimulating to their loins, he should check his man card.XXXIV wrote:You sir, have good taste. My two all-time best supporting actresses would be Selma Hayek's breasts in Desperado

I recently watched Streets of Fire (by the same guy who did The Warriors) which featured a VERY young, very hot Diane Lane. Plus a young Willem Dafoe hamming it up in a leather corset as the evil leader of a biker gang. I found it all fairly awesome.

Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
Well, count me as one who wasn't overly enchanted with "Inception". I thought the premise and the acting was well done, but the story itself seemed rather shallow. The latter part of that statement will probably raise eyebrows. The main story line lacked depth in my opinion. I would have much rather seen how these dream sequences originated. The back story involving Dicaprio's character was far more interesting than the plot. The movie left me flat.
I did quite enjoy Medal of Honor last night on Netflix watch instantly. I passed over this movie when it originally debuted some years ago thinking it was a rip off of An Officer and a Gentleman. But, this was a different, and based on a true story. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Dinero both played their characters well. Very gripping and emotional. It's a definite recommendation as a Netfilx free watch instantly.

I heard Inception had characters named Ariadne and Eames.

I thought I was the only person that ever saw that movie. Not surprised at all and Im sure you are not alone. While I loved it and will see it again, It did seem like one of those movies you either accept and love or reject and hate.sportdan30 wrote:Well, count me as one who wasn't overly enchanted with "Inception". .
I just watched a couple of Carey Grant classics again this week. Arsenic And Old Lace and Notorious. Both are great and if you can do B&W( I know some people cant stand it though I dont know why) they are both awesome and the dude is incredible in both. AaOL might be my #1 comedy all time.
Re: OT: Movie rental suggestions
I pretty much felt the same way about Inception (and Shutter Island, for that matter, two movies I was really looking forward to seeing). My girlfriend and I got stuck in the front row in the IMax theatre we went to see it at, so that could have something to do with it, but she wanted to leave 3/4 of the way through and I didn't put up an argument. Personally, I didn't even really care to see how it ended.sportdan30 wrote:Well, count me as one who wasn't overly enchanted with "Inception". I rented Hot Tub Time Machine this past weeked. Worst. Movie. Ever. And to think, I wanted to see it when it came out in the theaters.
By the way, Red Box is going to start carrying blu-ray movies very soon. Price will be $1.50 per night.

Not the worst movie ever but still not even worth the hype it's garnered. I was so disappointed. Thankfully I only rented it for 5 bucks off the AppleTV.sportdan30 wrote:I rented Hot Tub Time Machine this past weeked. Worst. Movie. Ever. Is the Red Box selection any good?
If people thought Blockbuster selection was shallow, how much could they hold in one of those machines?

No idea, but there's literally 2 people standing in-front of every red box I drive-by EVERY TIME. Amazing how these things took off.wco81 wrote:Is the Red Box selection any good?

Watched this tonight. Fun flick.AJColossal wrote:Anyone here see Black Dynamite? It's a somewhat respectfully done homage to the the "blaxploitation" movies of the '70s. It's sometimes silly, but it doesn't end up turning into a cliched lame parody like "Undercover Brother".
If you were to catch a quick glance of it on cable, you would swear it was made in 1974. Fun movie.
