OT: Help me pick a new cell phone

Post by JackB1 »

OK, so it's time to upgrade my cell phone and I have no clue :)
I am with ATT and they are offering a I-Phone 3G or 3Gs for $99.
Are they worth it? I think those are the older models, right?
I use my phone for occasional texting and mostly web browsing
and email. Occasional picture taking and mp3's. A nice sized
screen would be great for browsing and games.

Should I spring for the I-Phone or should I save money with a
cheaper (possibly free) model? I currently have a Samsung model
and king of like their product line.

How about the Samsung Captivate? It's an Android phone on AT&T that is getting decent reviews.
The sing-along songs'll be our scriptures.

The Captivate is quite expensive. I was considering the Samsung Sunburst or the Solstice?

Update: I am trying to find something with at least a 3" display.

Anyone have any experience with any of these:
HTC Tilt 2
Lg Expo
Samsung Sunburst
Samsung Solstice
Samsung Mythic
IPhone 3GS

I recently got a Captivate after trying to decide between it and the iPhone 4. I already had ATT so I didn't get that great Amazon deal on the phone for new customers. I got mine at Walmart for a little under $150, which is much cheaper than through ATT. After reading fairly extensively through a ton of forums on both phones and looking at them in the store I thought the Captivate would better serve my needs. I am not big into gaming on a phone, therefore that was not an issue for me. I am very pleased with the Captivate so far. It has a ridiculous number of free apps and is highly customizable. I get the best reception with it on calls than I have ever had, and web browsing is crazy fast via Wifi. The 4 inch screen is very helpful for reading web pages and forums without having to zoom in and out. The coolest thing for me, though, is the Swype keyboard technology. I can text and input web addresses and the like so much faster using the Swype method than just using the traditional methods. It almost never makes mistakes, which makes using the phone much more efficient. So far I am loving the Captivate.

The Captivate looks awesome, but I am not going to spend $199 for my next phone when all the one's I mentioned above are free.

3GS is free?

Any smart phone is going to require spending at least $15 more a month for data on top of voice and text plans.

That works out to $360 more over the life of the 2-year contract. Add in the voice plans, tax and texting plans and you're probably spending at least $1400 over those 2 years.

So whether your upfront cost is 0, $100 or $200, it's relatively a minor part of your total costs.

Are there differences among phones to affect the quality of the experience? Are those differences worth up to $200 more over 2 years? That's less than $10 a month.

I already am paying $15/mo for data with my current phone, so that will stay the same. Any phone I use will need this. No the 3GS is not free ($99). That was the only one in my list that wasn't free or minimal cost. My monthly phone bill has been $60/mo or $720 per year. You are right, another $100 or so will only increase my annual cost (for the first year) by 14%, but that doesn't mean I want to spend an extra $100-200 if I don't need to.

Should probably go to the stores and play around with these phones, see how they look in person, try the browser and apps and so on.

Then you can see if you're willing to pay more out of pocket.

You can go by specs but some may be too big or slippery. These things you can't tell by pictures.

OK, I am down to these 2:

1) IPhone 3GS - 8 Mb
2) Samsung Captivate

They are both $99

Anyone compare these? With the IPhone I am stuck with 8Gb, which I have no idea if it will be enough or not.
With the Captivate, I believe I can add a Micro memory card and upgrade the available space.

On a related note: Anyone ever deal with letstalk.com or wirefly.com? They offer really good prices, but the phone plan choices are limited and you have to
sign a new contract.

3GS is last year's model while the Samsung Captivate just came out this year and compares to the iPhone 4. That is surprising if it's already $99 (though Android phones seem to drop in price or get buy-one-get-one promos fairly soon after release).

The Samsung would be better from a HW perspective.

iPhone has better selection of games.

iPhone. Not IPhone.
:D

That being said I love my iPhone and wouldn't suggest anything else to anybody else. Greatest phone ever made IMO. I've used every iteration (original, 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4) and have never been disappointed. Greatest selection of SECURE, NON-BUGGY apps compared with other iPhone competitors. Better overall package far and away.

The Captivate is only $99 if bought thru a 3rd party site, like "letstalk.com", which I have read some bad stories about them,
so I am very leary. If I get it thru ATT, it's $200.
