They are loving it here at work

These 4:30 AM PST games are killing me.
But when it comes to the Albiceleste team, I would have stayed up all night to watch them. Impressive win by Maradona's squad. All the chances that they had against Nigeria were converted today, especially with Higuain. Messi was unstoppable again and with the entry of S. Aguero in the 2nd half, they added even more speed up front.
I was concerned with S. Korea speed up front and the mediocre play of Jonas Gutierrez last game who was playing out of his normal position. The four fullbacks were steady and what I liked best in Argentina was their offensive minded attitude and 'Jogo Bonito' during the entire game even when the game was out of reach for the Koreans.

Just watching the S. Korea-Argentina game on DVR. Disappointed that the S. Koreans are sitting back. They're not going to get lucky like the Swiss and what's worse is that they have the talent to attack. I don't think they can slug with ARG, but they keeping 10 behind the ball isn't going to do them any favors.

Eight goals in two matches today after we saw just 25 in the first 16 matches.
Maybe it's not Jabulani's fault, after all.

C'mon Naples give him a break. It's his open attitude towards an offensive Argentine squad that's making them one of the more exciting teams to watch. I still have my reservations about the D, but they're due for the big price. You can hate Diego all you like after they are champions.Naples39 wrote:I'm torn on the argentines. Say what? Diego Armando has been the most charismatic figure in an otherwise desultory World Cup!Naples39 wrote:I'm torn on the argentines. Seem like one of the most exciting teams in the WC, but I want to see Maradona lose so badly.
Seems like Spain's loss to Switzerland kicked the tournament to life, though. The exciting play continued today.

I'm with Naples. Maradona is a pox on humanity. Charismatic yes, but I still would be more likely to swerve to avoid a squirrel on the street than him.pk500 wrote:Say what? You cats need to loosen up. I'm not English, so I love Maradona! A real character. He almost looks like an Argentine version of Chris Farley's "Tommy Boy" on the touchline.RobVarak wrote:I'm with Naples. Maradona is a pox on humanity. What's wrong with that?

Tommy Boy was a harmless, likable idiot. Maradona is a colossal d-bag. If he wasn't such a talented soccer player, he'd probably be in jail or dead right now from his level of class as a human being. I don't know, I think there's a fine line between charismatic and someone who simply grabs headlines with outrageous (and often stupid) comments. At least that's my perspective on the guy.
Loosen up or try one of his Cuban cigars.
Look, has he's been a controversial figure during his playing days and as coach of the National team? Yes. Is the Napoli people after his diamond earrings?
Sure. Has he evaded taxes in Italy? Most likely.
But frankly I don't care about his personal life as much as I admire his current thought on offensive soccer first and foremost. He's carrying this team the same way as when he was a player. Fearlessly and with lots of skills up front. He was the best of his generation, he doesn't shy away at criticizing people like the irritating M. Platini, never had a good relation with the great Pele, but he's extremely loyal to his beliefs and players.
The problem with Diego is that sometimes he takes all glamor by himself and that can be distracting to the team. From what I've seen so far, only Germany and Spain despite their loss have tried to play a game that's pleasant to the eyes. Argentina missed many of the chances vs Nigeria that they converted today with S. Korea and more importantly their overall attacking mentality never changed.
Not only they scored in bunches today against a very dangerous team, but they played a beautiful game too. Many teams continue playing with a 4-4-2 formation, 4-5-1 tactics, Brazil goes with a 4-3-1-2 formation but Maradona is not afraid to put 3 very offensive minded players up front and I don't know if I would consider Di Maria a true midfielder. Even with the score 4-1, they kept coming up for more, instead of playing it safe as most teams would have done.
For that I applaud him, he's trying to make his team play the same way he did during his best days in Boca, Napoli and Barcelona.
The second round may expose some of the sloppiness that the aging D have shown here and there, but as long as the team continues to play attacking football, Argentina should be in the final four.
