Sort of hard when the band's lineup has been a revolving door of as many as 11 people, constantly changing album to album, with Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning remaining among the few constants.

A loose collective, to say the least!

Even naming Kevin Drew would be a $1000 answer on Pitchfork Jeopardy...

I've purchased a few of the plethora of releases this month:

New Pornorgraphers, Together. After loving the single "Crash Years," I've so far found the album to be slightly disappointing. However, it is growing on me, so I think it may be a slow builder (unlike the new Spoon, which was just disappointing). But I don't think I'll like it as much as their first three brilliant albums.

The National, High Violet. Their albums are always growers for me, but I can tell already this one is something else. The construction of the songs is just so damn good -- it's hard to find groups who understand how to craft songs without overproducing them. I suspect this will be very high on my favorites by the end of the year.

Holy f***, Latin. I really like these guys. They have a great energy and inventiveness to their "analog electronica". This album's not quite as adventurous as the last one but very close in quality. Great music to work out or drive to.

Free Energy, Stuck on Nothing. Great laid-back 70s guitar rock that had good indie spirit without sounding like hipster doofuses pillaging Freedom Rock. The opening song "Free Energy" is a gem that demands you open the T-top, and the rest is quite catchy and fun. Good summer album.

I like the Pornographers album. I don't have a snazzy description of it like you guys, I just enjoy it.

It's growing on me a lot. I think the songs are just not instantly catchy the way a lot of their early ones are, so it's taken me more time to get into it. I do love the very last song on the album, great closer.

This isn't "new music", but.....

Was just listening to "Classic Vinyl" on Sirius and
everytime I hear the Allman Bros. "Blus Sky" it makes me happy.
What a great station BTW.

Sorry, just had to share that. Carry on....

While this thread is back... I've lost my mind over the new album from Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti ("Before Today"). The dude is out there in that Zappa/Ween sorta way, but he has a real talent for catchy hooks. One of the most interesting albums of the year. If start digging into the back cat, you find out how bizarre the dude really is. Anyway, check out "Bright Lit Blue Skies" or 'Round and Round' for good examples.

Since this is our general old music thread as well, I have to just sing the praises of Sam Cooke's Night Beat. One of the songs ("Mean Old World") from this popped up in shuffle last night as I was winding down towards sleep and stopped me in my tracks. Had to start at the beginning of the record and play it through to the end. One of the few records that any cut forces me to listen to the whole thing. Magical.

Easily one of the best albums in the history of American popular music. Love it to death!

The classic mid-90s Guided By Voices line-up is touring this fall. I've seen them twice and loved both shows, but that was during the later incarnations.

Saw Gaslight Anthem last night at 1st Ave in Minneapolis. Good show, a lot of fun. I saw that GBV was coming to town, but I'm more excited about the triple bill of Social Distortion/Lucero/Frank Turner. That will be a hell of a lot of fun.
The sing-along songs'll be our scriptures.

I saw them in full effect with the sprout/mitchell line-up at the whiskey in 95 (this little know band at the time "Spoon" opened). GBV had an extra-large red igloo cooler on the stage full of Bud cans & probably crushed a case (and a carton of smokes) while ripping through 25+ songs. Unforgettable.

I cannot stop listening to the new Avenged Sevenfold album "Nightmare" because it is friggin' awesome. I've never really gotten into Avenged Sevenfold but have liked the songs I've heard in video games but not enough to actually get any of their stuff. For whatever reason I saw an ad in the Best Buy flyer over the weekend that they had a new one coming out so I decided to check it out. Holy s***, am I glad I did. I can't really compare it to their older material but I do know it's different from their metalcore days in the beginning. All I can say is this album is the perfect blend of old school metal from the genre's heyday and current metal. I cannot recommend it enough to fans of metal.

AS - Nightmare is now on my "to try" list :) I also never really got into them enough to bother getting any of their albums.

My listening time has been split between Nevermore's The Obsidian Conspiracy and In This Moment's A Star-Crossed Wasteland.

The new Arcade Fire comes out this week. I've really liked the last two singles they release from the new album, Sprawl and Ready to Start. Month of May I didn't really get into.

Looking forward to the full album.

Best new band (at least new to me) I've heard this year: Tame Impala. An Aussie band that plays a very cool brand of indie/alternative/psychedelic rock-pop. Tons of influences from past and present, but still incredibly unique.

Love em!...Same boat with the new album. "Buried Alive" has been replayed in my car 100 times this week. That song is a metal trip through the different sounds.
I know it sounds bad but, though I liked them, I didnt really start to get into them until the "Rev" died last december. I was doing a private tribute and their sound just got stuck in my head. They are not easy to get started on but once you do you are hooked.

Have all of their stuff now and I really like how they change some from album to album. You really should check out the two previous albums. City of Evil and the self titled Avenged Sevenfold. Great albums.

For now..."Its your f***in Nightmare!" :D

Spent the day listening to it. I assume it's a "grower". Sounds like Butler has been listening to a lot of Morrissey.

I'm a big Arcade Fire fan and I really like the new album. I'll be picking up a legit copy on Tuesday at Target for $7.99. It's a bit long at 16 songs, but there are no obvious cuts. When I first listened to "Month of May" I thought 'This is a great B side!' but I don't mind having it included as it fits within the overall theme. If you asked 10 people what 4 to cut you'd probably get 10 different answers. My favorites are the title track, "We Used to Wait", "Ready to Start", "Modern Man", "Suburban War", "Sprawl 2", "Empty Room", and "Deep Blue." There are none that I skip, although "Rococo" and "City With No Children" took the longest for me to warm up to. I'm really glad they haven't gone out of their way to try and make "Funeral 2." There are no real anthems on this one, but plenty of variety and solid songs with great lyrics. Some people will enjoy and appreciate that while others may believe that they are trying to do too much at once.

I agree that it's commendable that they aren't just catering to the festival crowd. 16 tracks def makes it a commitment to listen to. The "rockers" seem to show up very late in the track list which kind of throws the whole pacing off. All this will def be interesting to see live. Looking forward to it!

Great album for sure. Are you familiar with the band Dungen? Tame Imapala is basically the american version of that band.

Best new rap album this year has got to be Big Boi's "Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty". It is absolutely fantastic. It is old school Outkast all the way even though the record label wouldn't allow Dre on the album. It's one of the first albums I can just listen to start to finish without skipping songs. It's fantastic musically and lyrically. Between this album and all of the Atmosphere albums of late, it's a good time to follow rap.

It's a great album. Saw him a few weeks ago, played a lot of the new stuff and his parts on the Outkast songs.

Arcade Fire has never been a studio band, most people only like to listen to their shows which they think are better.
