Hmm, hopefully someone comes up with something better than LogmeIn (a subscription model IIRC) and just some VNC implementation.

Also wish Apple had aimed for a higher resolution, because now we're locked into 1024x768 for several years, since apps. have been changed for it.

Higher res would have been easier for screen sharing your computer on the iPad.

I agree. I should state that I'm using the free version of LogMein only, which has no sound (I'm using it for text sims, Word, Excel, etc.).

There's been some pretty cool apps lately on appshopper.com. Check them daily! I just downloaded a neat little kids game called Kids Five Spots for free. Good for the young ones, and my kids love it.

Well...I brought one of the ipads from work home with me and i can definitely see the appeal to some people but it still just doesn't fit in my life. I'd much rather sit with my full laptop and not have to type on this lame touch keyboard. It's definitely better than I thought it would be...especially the browser. I like how sites like espn redid their videos based on the browser you're using. The QuickTime videos are really good on their site.

The Ipad has been a perfect fit for my family, as my kids love the games as well as watching shows on Netflix. They already use this more than they ever did with our Macbook. It's a more suitable and user friendly device than a laptop when it comes to family use. I'm not as paranoid when my six year old daughter picks up the Ipad and plays a game. On the Macbook, she would have needed more assistance.

On a side note, I'm really starting to get in to Lost as I've already watched three shows on the Ipad with Netflix streaming. The screen size is perfect and the picture is near HD quality.

My experience has continued to be better than expected on the iPad. My laptop is rather large and a pain to lug around so the iPad has been fabulous for convenience. I have no worries about the battery running out...it's superb. I mainly use it in the living room but it has been great to use when I goto bed. It's easy to just place on the small end table next to the bed when I'm done browsing/working. Many people I have talked to have given me the "why did you get one of those" speeches. That ends VERY quickly when I pull out the iPad and show them it's abilities. They have all left amazed. I love the device.

Correct...It ain't happening. And if I had kids, HELL no. That thing would break so fast. Kids love iPhones/Droids...the games are perfect for their little hands. My nieces and nephews love playing games on the phones...that's for sure.

It's a nice device, and if I didn't HAVE to have a laptop for work purposes, I can see buying one of these as my next replacement, but when I've got a laptop that lasts around 5 hours, what do I need another 5-10 hours for on top of that? I'm never going to sit and jut use the iPad over my laptop. Hell, I used this thing on Friday while watching the Suns game and it's been sitting on my desk ever since. No desire really. It's awkward to hold, ridiculous to type on and it offers me nothing over my Macbook. So....no, I'm not getting one.

BTW, the iBook app is cool...messed with that Friday. But I don't read...so that's out.

I don't know if I'm going to purchase the 2nd edition but I wanted to take a look since Wired was one of the first to jump on the iPad train.

It appears to be offline and wholly encapsulated. It was a large file coming in at 500 MB.

Ya their pricing model is f'd up. But I bet they are going to charge newsstand prices until they can put up a subscription model. Or until the $5 pricing doesn't yield any returns. Basically they are saying let's see how much we can charge and get away with it.

The problem is the newspapers and magazines. Their content isn't unique or worth enough to pay what they are asking. Even if the NYT starts to charge, what exactly are you getting with it. Even magazines, the content just isn't their anymore because mostly they forgot about content and fill magazines with fluff to sell advertising rates.

It's as if we were in a time, right after the start of silent movies and then apple came out with 3d HD TV. There is no model for digital distribution of news, like there is for books. And there is not natural progression from newsprint to digital media.

I go back to a business principle of Porter's five forces...news and less-so magazines, just aren't offering information that people want to buy and read that differentiates themselves from free news and information. Why do I need the NYT when Google news will give me the same story by the AP. Unique information will survive and people will pay for it but it has to be different than what you can get free and right now that's not the case.

I still think Apple screwed the pooch but not having a iNewsstand. This thing really needs it.

I've got one of these kooky things, I'd love to fill it with movies, but the available space on my laptop is far less than I've got on the ipad, and the traditional method of syncing to itunes would necessitate having all these movies on my hard drive as well, which isn't going to fly. Is there a way to copy stuff directly to the ipad from external storage (firewire) without having to go through itunes? Alternatively, I could just move my entire itunes media folder to the external storage.

Yes. If on a Mac hold down the 'Option' key and then click and drag the media over to iTunes. It will just put a link to the media, leave it in it's original spot and not copy it into iTunes itself.

There's an option in the iTunes preferences -> Advanced which reads 'Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to Library'

If you uncheck that option, it will by default not copy the movie to your iTunes library when you add the movie to iTunes.

However, this function can be helpful if you need to move your entire library to an external drive and keep everything there, if you choose to go with the external drive route.

If you're storing your main media on an external drive, you still have to back it up in case of drive failure.
