A selection of 'control relative to horse' (instead of 'control relative to camera') may help you.Zeppo wrote:So I finally got a chance to play a bit of the game today, and I am very impressed. I cannot wait for that game.vinny-b wrote:both yourself and Teal will prolly be very interested in 'LA Noire' in the future (if you're not already, that is). I wanted to further expand on single player impressions.
If you take this game on it's own it's a massive undertaking and Rockstar pulled it off. It's a game that evolves the GTA line but doesn't really push the limits of that formula.
Car cases are now horse chases. Stealing a car is now stealing a horse. The subway is now the train. Even how the story plays out is similar. Missions are confined to a small area and once you finish that mission line, you rarely have the need to go back. Which is a shame because YOU want to return back to the towns and wilderness areas.
The other thing is that in all R* games there are really two games in it; the free roam and the story line. What you do in one only minimally affects the other.
For complete openness, I have only committed one crime in the game and that was accidentally shooting a civilian in one of those random side missions. There was no need to steal horses, or to shoot up anything because the wasn't any real benefit in doing so, other than wanting to get chased by the sheriff.
This isn't a mediocre game, by any means, but like I said, it leaves you wanting more spaghetti western moments rather than GTA moments. Instead of having mission based train raids, free roam train or stage coach raids.
And the best part of the game are the stupid little side things that you could do, like hunting. I only wish they had more.
One of the coolest parts of the game was when you beat someone "big".
As I get close to beating it, I want more western things to do which is both a compliment and criticism to RDR. The environment is sublime but there needs to be more to do in it. Like a Western sandbox mode that uses every inch of the land inside and outside of story mode.

I'm playing it as a good guy also, wasted $250 on a horse as it got mauled in my first run in with a cougar, was on a bounty mission shooting the gang members and the cougar kills my horse while I'm on him instantly, it walks away not looking at me so I put 4 shots into him to take him down and the bounty I was after ends up getting away while I was skinning the cougar. Loved helping Bonnie herd cattle and going on missions with the marshall and his deputies are my favorite parts so far.
Will take me a long time to finish the single player as I just have to stop to shoot some animals or check out everything in between while traveling to different areas.

No, I'm sure I'll be stunned. The Rockies and that area are among my favorite anywhere, so I know it'll be awesome. Right now, I'm taking my time. I'm in no hurry to rush along the story...vinny-b wrote:teal: have you visited Elizabeth (big trees)?Teal wrote:Mexico is BEAUTIFUL. Reminds me of the Badlands.

It's not that large but it is stunning. The difference from the woods to the high rockies with snow is amazing!vinny-b wrote:teal: have you visited Elizabeth (big trees)?Teal wrote:Mexico is BEAUTIFUL. Reminds me of the Badlands.

Im loving it big time too. I wont be getting to the ending soon though as I waste hours doing stupid s***. Which says alot about the beauty of the game. I do however need to get off my ass in Mexico and unlock those northern mountains I have heard about.TCrouch wrote:Speaking of story, I think the ending may be the most satisfying ending I've seen in years. This has really been an amazing twelve months for gaming.
Doesn't that mean that you need to continue to sit *on* your ass, in order to unlock those mountains???XXXIVI wrote: do however need to get off my ass in Mexico and unlock those northern mountains I have heard about.

This game is only surpassed by WoW for me as a total waste of time time suck. Two hours go by and I have accomplished nothing besides downing a six pack.
Definitely. The nice thing is that you don't need a full poker night contingent to have fun. 2 or 3 guys can go around and take on hideouts and hunt and it's a blast.Brando70 wrote:So do you guys see yourselves playing this online for a while? I don't understand why anyone would choose not to own the BEST GAME EVER as SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Actually I'm not far in enough to really judge, but I have loved herding cattle in the rain, having to make split-second moral decisions about random events based on shaky visual evidence, and generally never using fast travel, because the getting there is part of the fun in this game.

LOL, part of it is a time issue, and I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy playing a Western-themed game. But after reading the thread it sounds amazing. And having a long weekend seemed like a good time to dive into a new game. Time to check what I have for trade-in.Slumberland wrote:I don't understand why anyone would choose not to own the BEST GAME EVER as SOON AS POSSIBLE.
completely agree, on the travel. Thankful for horseback. It is done wellSlumberland wrote:Actually I'm not far in enough to really judge, but I have loved herding cattle in the rain, having to make split-second moral decisions about random events based on shaky visual evidence, and generally never using fast travel, because the getting there is part of the fun in this game.
i only wish the camera/control was on the level of GTA IV, whenever you step off the horse. To me the this part of the game feels like GTA San Andreas. More arcade. A step backward
