OT: Get Well, Naples!
Moderators: Bill_Abner, ScoopBrady
So I am sitting here typing this post on my new iPad I received in the mail today from a mysterious sender!
Guys this is really too much! I mean I saw the collection start but I was expecting a bouquet or maybe a xbox game, not something like an iPad! I am really blown away. This is absolutely perfect for using in the hospital for the rest of my stay and will be great at home too, at least when the wife isn't stealing it!
Thanks to everyone for all the great support and the incredible gift!!!

Enjoy, brother. I'll send along a list of all the names of those who contributed. It's loooonnnngggg, obviously.
We're just glad that we could come up with a gift that would hopefully help you cope with the down time you've got in the days ahead. Every time you pick that sucker up remember that we're all here pulling for you!

Well, as Zeppo and Scoop noticed, I was online for the first time in while yesterday. I actually came home on Thursday after 11 weeks in the hospital.
I went home in a wheelchair and still have very limited mobility. I haven't used the chair at home as I prefer to stumble around in my walker or holding the walls or the shoulders/arms of someone. There are still a lot of other challenges I have to deal with for the foreseeable future but it's nice to be home and have some degree of normalcy.
I also have to say thanks again for the iPad. I wasn't able to use it much in the hospital because it didn't play nice with the hospital wireless network, but it's great at home. It's particularly great to leave lying around the couch area as my computer desk is upstairs and this is a great option.
EDIT: Special thanks to Rob too for taking the initiative to organize it all!
Anyway, I'll probably see a bunch of you online soon, maybe with red dead. Thanks for all the incredible support!

Never had the pleasure of getting shot by you man.
Get Teal a couple of times for me.
Glad your home. I'm sure you have learned to hate hospitals as much as I have. Get well soon.

Re: OT: Get Well, Naples!
So I got a PM last week asking how I was doing, but since you were all very supportive and got me the greatest get-well gift EVAR, I thought I'd post an update.
It's been about 5 months since onset, and the only thing I can say for sure is I won't be deaf and I won't be in a wheelchair forever. My hearing is pretty much back to normal, and I am still plugging away at therapy trying to get walking again. I guess the good news is that I keep beating the timetables the therapists are setting for me regarding walking. Just in the last two weeks I have felt significant improvement in my ability to walk around. The last week I have been taking morning walks with the wife to local places like a coffee shop (say 2 blocks or so each way) only using one cane for assistance, which is a pretty huge leap from where I was only recently. I don't feel completely useless anymore, but sometimes walking for me feels like driving a boat in terms of stopping and starting and changing directions.
Also, I have begun to feel more like myself, which counts for a lot. I don't feel as sick all the time, and feel more relaxed during the day to enjoy things.
All that being said, still a long way to go before being anything close to normal. I still have barely been alone, and my walking begins to fall apart after 2 or 3 blocks, requiring me to sit and rest. Only driven a car twice since being sick, as my feet are slow to react and move as I want them to. Haven't started work yet either, and trying to walk to work or even just get around the office is kind of daunting for me at the moment. Lastly, I have some pretty serious bowel and bladder issues which have shown little signs of improvement, so I may have to undergo some procedures in the future, and even those don't guarantee much. When you are talking about nervous system/neurological breakdown, there's really not much doctors can do. Pretty much just wait and hope.
I'm not sure whether to be happy that my recovery is going well by most accounts, or that I had a total neurological breakdown without warning or for any identifiable cause/risk factors. As one doctor put it, "I don't mean to minimize what you're going through, but it's pretty much just bad luck." Yeah, really really bad luck.
Sometimes I feel like I should buy some lottery tickets because the universe owes me.
Thanks again everybody.

Always good to hear progress, Naples. Thanks for updating us!
Re: OT: Get Well, Naples!
Appreciate the update, Marc. My heart was in the iPad, even if my money wasn't. After all, someone once said you can't get blood from a turnip...
Glad to hear the improvement...
