Perhaps, but I was checking out the new Macbooks, which by the way are very cool and I thought to myself, why would I need one of these? For mobility and simple ease of use, the Ipad will suit me and the rest of the family very well. I thoroughly enjoyed my Macbook for the past few years, but for the way we used it, it was overkill. My only concern right now are he Wifi issues that keep popping up with the Ipad. I'm hoping I'm not one of the few who have problems, or the buyer's remorse will quickly sink in.dbdynsty25 wrote:Sucker. Hype machine got ya.

This is a great little app. I just bought it yesterday and it's great for scribbling ideas and notes. I wish there was a better way to write finer notes on the iPad without a stylus but I guess that's not going to happen.

I had buyer remorse but then I realized how much I was using it. I think critics want it to be something out of Star Trek or something where it controls robots and saves newspapers. This morning as I was grabbing coffee at a local coffee house, everyone had there macbooks and were mostly surfing the net. If money wasn't an object, why lug around a MB just to surf, get on facebook, check emails etc?sportdan30 wrote:Perhaps, but I was checking out the new Macbooks, which by the way are very cool and I thought to myself, why would I need one of these? The iPad is going to be overlooked because it doesn't have that many killer apps. I think Apple dropped the ball on this because they are waiting for 3rd party developers to create them. The iPad needed a newsstand to couple with the bookstore. So far sites newspaper sites have just been missing. When they do come out, you'll see a million different versions diluting the pool. Apple should have just said, here's the format now plug into it.
Another missing contributor are magazines. The few examples are piss poor. Zinio is not the solution for one, having to connect to the internet to view content is a stupid model similar to what they recording industry might propose. Second all they are doing is throwing up hi-def PDFs maybe with a video for a similar price to their newsstand versions. Potential exists for these guys but they are so f'n stupid that they can't grab the future and make a money even though people are willing to give them money.
Apps are still early in the dev cycle as most everyone can tell. Just as on the iPhone 1g most are simplistic and not feature-rich.
Lastly, the iPhone OS is showing it's age and while OS 4.0 is welcome Apple really needs to be working on 5.0 to move the potential for the iPad into reality.
Still I'm getting my moneys worth out of my iPad because "being connected" is much easier then with a MBP.

I think Apple would have loved to include a newsstand in addition to iBooks; unfortunately it's the magazine and newspaper publishers that don't want that. They don't want to give Apple any control over their distribution options, and most importantly don't want to lose their direct link to you, the subscriber, and your tasty demographic info that they use to attract advertisers. The NY Times wants to know who you are, so they're nervous about new electronic distribution media.
The Zinio app, while imperfect, is the best bet right now. It doesn't require internet access (you download the whole magazine and then you can read any time).
There are already a lot of great apps out there, but I'd be surprised if someone can really show me a 'typical daily use case' where an iPad isn't a good alternative to a laptop. Sure, if you write novels, work in specialized software or design, or spend all day tweaking photos and videos, you want a laptop. But, I have 3 Macs within feet of me right now and the iPad is still my preferred medium for email, web, calendar, games, notes, news/magazines, video etc.
Hope you're enjoying it, but it sounds like you're on the fence.

Well Zinio is mediocre for me. The mags are so big that it takes just a second to readjust the resolution. I guess my problem is why pay for the newsstand price for a PDF when I'm not going to pay for the hardcopy version. Their model is f'd up and they are too stupid or greedy to figure it out.
I had buyer's remorse but that's subsided. I'm more than pleased with my iPad except for the lack of killer apps. I know they will come but it sucks to have a device with this much potential and have it limited.

I'll go even further than JRod: Zinio sucks. The Sporting News Daily just switched from another online mag app -- can't remember the name -- to Zinio about two weeks ago, and I hate it to read TSN Daily and other mags on my laptop.
Zinio is bloatware. Slow to load, slow to turn pages, etc., etc.
If I was making a comparison of magazine readers to PDF readers, Zinio is Adobe Acrobat Reader. Bloatware that has been shoved down the throats of the masses, which is sad when there are so many better, leaner alternatives out there like PDF-XChange and the like.

I think the problem is that magazine publishers are wary of online distribution and the potential for disruption to their business.pk500 wrote: If I was making a comparison of magazine readers to PDF readers, Zinio is Adobe Acrobat Reader. So they will only sign on with locked down channels and even then, will put out their product only if they can make more money than print, even though the smarter thing might be to pass on the savings in production and physical distribution costs to the consumers to get more of them to buy their product.
Short-sighted but not surprising.
Turns out that ePub, which is widely favored for books, isn't so great for magazines.
So we may end up with a bunch of dedicated apps. instead of a standard format which could be read by different apps.
Would only make sense if they want to emphasize viewing videos over everything else.Rodster wrote:Apple Eyes OLED Display for Second Gen iPad

Current OLEDs fare worse on battery life for everything else. One of the things which has impressed people is the battery life so to give that up doesn't make sense.

I don't believe that's true. Why are all of the longest lasting touchscreen PMPs all OLED? Cowon S9, Zune HD...all oled. And their battery lives are longer than the iPod Touch. Not significantly (33 to 30 for music), but still...battery life is not going to be the determining factor if they switch over. Truer colors and darker blacks would probably be the ultimate goal.wco81 wrote:Would only make sense if they want to emphasize viewing videos over everything else.Rodster wrote:Apple Eyes OLED Display for Second Gen iPad

That article is all speculation because PMPs like the Zune HD hadn't been released yet. Real world testing in my own two little grubby hands tells me that OLED devices fare better when it comes to battery life. I've got three devices and the last place device is an LCD based Touch. It's just fact.
Size wise, there is no way that Apple throws a 10" OLED in the next iPad...it just costs too damn much still.

Picked up the 32gb. Definite buyers remorse....JUST KIDDING! This thing is a freakin' hit with the kids and myself. The wife will come around eventually. Web browsing is pure bliss so far. Downloading apps and having them on a much larger scale than my son's Ipod Touch is perfect. It's not even compareable. The screen is gorgeous. Solitaire has never looked so good!
I'm in that very brief hands on stage and it's simply a delight so far.

Not gonna happen now that the wife said....well it is pretty cool. Love the mail feature and the browsing is just pure bliss. This baby doesn't get warm even after 2 hours and i'm at 68 percent after four hours. The mobility is great for going up and down the stairs. Can't wait to wake up in the morning and read the sports section on here!MizzouRah wrote:What are the odds Dan put it's up for sale next week?
