Yeah...between my laptop (a mac, so it's not like I'm anti-Apple) and phone...there isn't any space for it. I'm not getting rid of either of those two things, so where exactly does this thing fit in? I just don't get it.

For someone that doesn't have a laptop, or strictly uses a feature phone and not a smartphone...sure, I can see how it would be extremely useful and fun. For me, my laptop beats the sh*t out of it and in fact, so does my phone. Sooo....I still don't get it.

I made it through day two of Ipadpalooza, so I think I just might wait and see what the second generation of this new device brings. As long as my Macbook is going strong, it's hard to warrant the purchase at this time. With that said, I can't wait to stop by the Apple Store or Best Buy and check it out!

I'm not going to sell you on buying one because I don't really know why people do that, it's not like I take cut if you buy one. I'm just posting impressions and my thoughts on this new device. For me this is what the iPad is...

iPad v. iPhone
The iPhone now seems small. If you put 4 iPhones together, that's the size of the iPad. That may not seem significant until you give it a try. Enough to make people buy one? No, but that's enough to draw a difference to the iPhone. While I'm on the go, surfing on the iPhone is okay. But if you are doing extended web surfing the iPad is the clear winner.

iPad v. Macbook (Laptop)
Somewhere along the lines, this match-up was created. I think people want an all-in-one device or most feel that they should have 1 computer and 1 phone. We'll get there when they solve the typing problem on tablets. I don't see the iPad as a macbook replacement, I see it at the traveling replacement for people that don't spend all their computer time at home. Going to a coffee shop...ipad wins. Traveling...ipad wins. Commute...ipad.

For example on Friday, I went snowboarding and some of the people in the lodge were on their laptops. For the first time I thought, wouldn't that be much easier with an iPad?

Now where the laptop wins is if you need to type a lot. Even forum posting goes slower. That might improve as I get better with the keyboard. Typing a document...macbook. Spreadsheet...macbook. Football manager...macbook :). If you do anything more involved then you will need a PC/Laptop, no question. With the iPad there's the typing threshold that exists and NO ONE, not even Apple has solved it. Or really attempted to solve it. I don't do any IT work. If I need to write a paper, take notes, or something like that, then I'll use my MBP.

One final point regarding mobility...the iPad (wi-fi) will work anywhere you take your laptop since they are wi-fi dependent. (Unless you have a 3G card or something). So if you are just taking your laptop places, this is easier to carry.

We are probably 3 years at the earliest before we see an iPad or slate be a true replacement for a laptop. It's coming but it's not here.

I'll stop this long post by saying this, I believe that Job's has succeeded in creating a good device and a new market that didn't exist before. It is the in between device which if you are like me, that fits my lifestyle and use. And the reason why it's hard to understand what the iPad is better at, is because it is a device that creates a new use and means for a "computer" and people haven't created the ends. Like websites, blogs, facebook, twitter, texting, you tube, google - those things weren't created first.

But why? Why is it SOOO much easier on an iPad? You can't type as well without a keyboard, you can't visit sites that utilize flash and you can't run 90% of the programs created to run on PCs or Macs...I just don't see the advantage. Sure, it's a little smaller and lighter, but hell, I've got a laptop at work that's smaller and lighter than an iPad. So size can't be the reason. What, you don't like hinges? I don't see the advantage at all.

There is one significant place that I can see wanting a tablet form factor over a laptop...and that's on a plane where there isn't much room to maneuver. Everywhere else, the laptop is a more functional device.

I don't know if you've tried it yet, but once I did on Saturday it clicked. Maybe it's just a tactile sensation thing but here's the ease. No power cord. No laptop bag. It's just like carrying a magazine size book. If you are writing code for work then no it's not easier. But if you just browse sites, check emails, watch a movie then why carry a laptop around? It has ease of mobility over a macbook.

I didn't mean to imply you were trying to sell me, and I certainly appreciate the impressions. While i don't agree that the iPad has created a new market, I am not going to tell you that your perception is wrong.

Would I take an iPad if given to me..Hell yes. But for me it just doesn't do anything I don't have already and yes I have used one. For me that is the deciding factor and I would be content to not even discuss the iPad at all if it weren't for the endless hype about how it is changing the world.

But what do I know apparently they sold 700k this weekend, never under estimate the need to feel cool i guess.

Well that has a lot to do with it. Now in my opinion Apple delivers excellent products so I think while Jobs gets a bad rap for being a perfectionist, that attitude comes out in his products. For me, I like Apple because I feel they are one of a few companies that are pushing the envelop and deliver on their promises. With the iPod, iPhone, and the MacBooks many people's expectations have been met when there was so much hype.

By market I don't mean eBooks, saving the newspapers or creating games. That's up to creators do that. I don't even mean the iPad by itself but future slates. I mean creating a market for things we haven't considered yet. I think magazines will be given a chance to create versions that blend art, writing, with video and sound.

I think the internet can go HD. Just when sports went HD and everyone was blown away, we are basically still using the internet much as we did before 2000. There's text, pictures, some web 2.0 features but mostly it's just rudimentary web pages.

I'll post pictures of the better apps to give off a better idea what is being done this early.

This is where you lose me and why I always snicker at people who bring laptops to the lodge where I ski. You're going skiing: Why the f*ck do you need a laptop? Can't people disconnect for even a couple of hours? I might spend 25 minutes, tops, in the lodge all day when I'm skiing.

I have spent months, and now especially three days talking myself into all the reasons why i don't need one of these and last night had the moment where i realized maybe i do want one (i think anyone using the word "NEED" with a device like this is fooling themselves...this is a toy device). But, point being, the wife is a laptop whore when she gets home from work. Jumps on facebook, surfs the web, etc. To the point where i typically only get my hands on it after she goes to bed...and usually with battery life at about 5%! So what am i doing usually, i'm on the iPhone playing games, surfing, etc. Last night i had the feeling of "well, for $500 as opposed to over $1000 for another macbook i could be doing all of this with a bigger, brighter screen and have it be far more enjoyable.

I think for me, as an ancillary device that can provide all my iPhone can and slightly more but in a more enjoyable format it may be worth the investment IF i can come up with the extra cash, and that's clearly a big "if". Need another big poker win and then i'm set!

I remember years ago trying to sell my parents, who still to this day don't have a dvd player in their house, the idea of buying one of those internet/email only devices just so they could join the rest of the world. I guess for me i can see this as a similar purchase, not so much to replace my laptop, but to be used in addition to.

To use a car analogy, iPad won't meet your day to day needs.

Kind of pricey for what it is and it's not practical.

It's like a roadster convertible. You can't move your furniture with it or transport 4 adults comfortably or take long trips. But for tooling around on summer weekends, it can be great fun.

Apple still sells computers so they're clearly not intending that you buy iPads instead of their other computers. More like as a complement to their other products.

People get netbooks because they're cheap and small but they don't get it as their main computer. Sure netbooks can run any PC software but not very well. You can write a book on them or run complicated Photoshop operations but only if you like torturing yourself.

They really only sold 300K on launch day, so who knows how many they sold Sunday...I doubt it was 400K on Easter tho. LOL. But still...

These were people that their kids were skiing but they were the ride. Or some that stopped skiing early afternoon. Most who were there to ski did, and didn't bring anything.

Why do you care what people bring to a ski lodge? I brought my laptop to one last year when me and a group of friends went up to Big Bear for the weekend after I had my ACL surgery. I couldn't ski and i wasn't about to sit in the cabin all day by myself. There are lots of reasons why someone would bring a device of some sort to the lodge. Sheesh.

I'm talking about the people dressed in ski clothes who sit in the lodge on their laptops. They're clearly skiers, yet God forbid they can't disconnect from the Web for a day. And it's obvious they're just f*cking around on the Web, updating Facebook, playing Yahoo Games, etc. That's pretty lame, if you ask me.

Your situation was completely different.

Well fine...if they bring their laptop and stick it in their locker and use it throughout the day, I can see your point. LOL...dressed in full ski attire and rocking it is pretty ridiculous.

Dude, I see it EVERY time I go skiing, and that's at least once per week from early to mid-December through the end of March, often two times per week. And some of the jackoffs who are on a laptop in the lodge in ski clothes have their kids sitting right beside them, usually with their heads buried in a DS or an iPod Touch. Total f*cking disconnect. Please plant a bullet in my temple if I ever become THAT guy.

I'm online as much as anyone for work and play. But damn, it's not a needle surgically implanted in my arm. I actually like to pull it out from time to time and disconnect! :)

Well my boss bought one of course, and I must admit seeing some of the better apps that were made for the iPad it is a tad more impressive. I really liked a cookbook app I saw and there was a Gap Application that I would personally never use that was really cool for shopping for clothes.

Still don't really know where I would use one but it looks much cooler now that I got to use it for more then 3 minutes.

Most of the people who don't get it and claim that the iPad is pointless have never used one; most people who have actually used one see it as an ideal device for a myriad of tasks, purposes and environments.

For example; I'm sitting at 35,000 feet right now in coach on Amercan Airlines with Wi-fi as I type this. At 6'2" and 250lbs this is not typically an environment where I can whip out my laptop; yet the iPad is completely comfortable and fun to use. Magazines, books, movies etc. Plus all my work while i travel in a comfortable, portable form factor and a 10+ hour battery.

Use one, then critique.

I've used one in the store...and other than the situation you mentioned (which I mentioned in a previous post), I just don't get it.

And if you didn't spend so much on pointless sh*t, you'd be sitting in First.

You should moonlight in Apple PR or marketing. That reads like boilerplate, dude. :)
