Check swing coming via patch..
If they can stay away from all the little bugs MLB 2k usually has.. this could be a decent baseball game this year. I still love the way you pitch and hit. Now, I know what you are thinking… if this is so realistic, then why have I read from recent previews that there might not be a check swing in Major League Baseball® 2K10? Before we get into check-swing talk, let me clarify that the check-swing is in fact part of an upcoming patch. Pulling back on the right stick will play a check swing if you previously committed to a power swing or contact swing. Flicking up to contact swing and then pulling down will stop the contact swing. A power swing is performed by pulling down and then flicking up, as mentioned above. However, if you pull the right stick down back towards you after starting a power swing, that too will result in a check swing. This implementation of check-swinging makes it impossible to do one by accident. Pulling down on right stick = check swing. Never again will you have to ask “Why the heck did he check swing?!?!?” before contemplating launching a controller across the room. It also makes it easier to trigger when you actually want a check swing to play.

Good lord that's a lot of graphics over home plate before and during each pitch. Yikes. And this is a hilarious statement Mizzou:
Has any 2k game come out WITHOUT being a bug riddled mess?If they can stay away from all the little bugs MLB 2k usually has.. this could be a decent baseball game this year.
This was my game two years ago (I purchased a PS3 last year) and pitching was my favorite part. I enjoyed using the stick as opposed to just pushing buttons. It looks like they improved it also by letting you pick the pitch first and getting rid of the "meatball".
It was everything else after the pitch that ruined it for me. Hopefully they learned and improved and made a good game this year.

"The Show" is beautiful to look at and plays out like real baseball, but you hardly feel like you are "playing" the game. The game still has the same basic gameplay it had 5 years ago. Where's the innovation and interactive-ness? MVP was a more interactive game and that is over 5 years old now.TheGamer2 wrote:Picked up a PS3 last year for the Show, which is a great game, but I've always enjoyed the 2k series. Basically. It's been a disaster since the DC version, the infamous auto-field version. There has been a "better" game every year since. ASB, MVP, and now The Show. They've always been in 2nd place.Diablo25 wrote:In my opinion, this series officially sucks. Until they prove me wrong that is the opinion I will have.

I agree some innovation would be nice (perhaps on the pitching and fielding end), but the little things that get added to the game each year add to it's freshness, at least for me. With regards to the new pitching mechanics in 2K, sounds like more of the experimentation phase that they've been fooling with for the last several years. I just don't want to play joystick hockey when I'm sitting down to play a baseball video.JackB1 wrote:"The Show" is beautiful to look at and plays out like real baseball, but you hardly feel like you are "playing" the game. I've bought every this game every year as long as I can remember (going back the DC). Some year's are better than others, some bugs are worse than others. I think it depends on what you play. Last year, I played more online vs friends than offline. So, I didn't really see a lot the bugs people were complaining about in the franchise. For me, laggy servers would be a much bigger issue than some stat-glitch in the franchise.

Yeah, but for me all the big bugs WERE on the field, not in the franchise.
Poorly designed stealing system not scaled to 'apparent' pitch speed, wonky hit stick/too many homers, poor/glitchy base running AI, fielders that have seizures and let balls go right by them/over their heads......
Not to mention the bugs that were in franchise too. I sold the game after the umpteenth time where my starting pitcher on the menu was different then the one who actually started the game and there was no way to get the rotation back in synch......

The Show is in the same group as FIFA, NBA 2K, and EA's NHL series. It doesn't matter to me if it's more of the same as it's already good enough. MLB 2K needs major work but honestly if it were any developer other than VC I wouldn't even consider it.sportdan30 wrote:I agree some innovation would be nice (perhaps on the pitching and fielding end), but the little things that get added to the game each year add to it's freshness, at least for me. VC is one of the best sports devs out there. It's just a matter of when more than if they can do it. The question is, is MLB 2K so badly broken that it needs a total re-write and does 2K have the money and patience to see it through the end of it's MLB license. That's the big question.
Wrt The Show if you have a PS3 and most of us do skipping on The Show just to experiment and try MLB 2K10 is money misspent IMO because The Show is already great and VC is trying to fix a badly broken baseball game.
On another note: Rumors are swirling courtesy of Gamespot that EA may dump their NCAA Basketball game as it's not mentioned in their 2011 lineup.

I am a huge MVP fan and I would love to have him explain how it is more interactive then the Show.

Seems like they have done a lot to the game this year.
This is no knock against the Show because it is the best baseball game ever, but I'm tired of giving 3-4 run leads in the 7th-9th innings no matter what I do. Its beyond frustrating. Hopefully its not a problem in this years game.

Funny thing happened last night... I got my SI Swimsuit issue in the mail yesterday, I'm paging through it pretty quickly, not really interested, same stuff every year, whatever. My girlfriend's watching TV right across the room from me, she's jokingly rolling her eyes at me.
But I got to one page and I stopped for a moment and studied it pretty closely. My girlfriend jokingly acts all put off and says, "Oh, let me guess, see something you like!"
I turned the book around to show her I was looking at a full page ad for MLB 2K10! She just laughed and goes. "You've got some real issues." I guess she's right.

I would like to know how he came to this conclusion as well.Danimal wrote: I am a huge MVP fan and I would love to have him explain how it is more interactive then the Show.
The metered pitching in the Show is identical to what MVP had.
The hitting is similar. Both use the buttons to swing and the left stick to alter the swing.
MVP had wonderful fielding with the throwing meter. The Show doesn't do this quite as well, but it is very similar.
The one thing MVP still does noticeably better is pace the game for gamers. I can get through a game of MVP in under 45 minutes and not lose the batter walkups or replays.
Back to MLB 2k.
I like the hitting using the right stick, but the pitching is a mess to me. The motions you need to go through in order to throw different pitches are not intutive at all. Hitting feels nice until you see the ball leave the bat. Pitching is disjointed from the get go.

Jack: have you tired RTTS mode in recent years? To me, this felt more like actually "playing" a sport, then any other sports vidgame have ever played. MLB 08 (PS2) in particular. Taking part in running the bases, playing OF from the player's perspective (although the recent PS3 versions need a better camera in this area) etc.
having said this, if not the joystick, i do wonder why the triggers aren't utilized in baseball titles. The very first dreamcast WSB baseball title (the one DB mentioned) had this. The hitting/pitching interface utitlizing the triggers, in addition to the graphics were the game's strength. To be honest, that title really had an excellent foundation in place. It is strange the engine was scrapped and completely redone the following year.

The RTTS mode is the only thing I play in The Show. I would love to finally be able to play it online without any lag or disconnects but The RTTS is a Sports RPG done right, very addicting.vinny-b wrote:Jack: have you tired RTTS mode in recent years? 2K is offering a few incentives if you pre-order. By the way, what's up with that screen shot of Pujols and the pitch telling you, the user it's a breaking ball?

Sportdan,
That is the batter's eye feature, where as good hitters might see what the pitch is before it's pitched.
