Thanks Game7 and others for all your helpful advice. All the settings variables on a new LCD TV can be quite confusing for a "TV-novice" like myself. Thankfully, everything looks pretty great with all the default settings. Somebody should put together an easy guide for customizing your LCD TV setup, like one of those "Dummies" books, if they already haven't done so. I will check out AVS to see if someone has put together such a guide. Just like in video games....I don't like getting lost in tweaking hellGameSeven wrote:Well, like LAking and DB, I'd be inclined to leave AMP off, but again, here is where the subjective impression comes in. You should experiment to find out what works for you.JackB1 wrote:So should I leave the "auto motion plus" off unless I am watching sports?
There are a ton of other settings to tweak. Are most of them OK left on default or are there some that most everyone changes?
As for the other options, unless someone chimes in with the same model that can give you a few pointers, you'd do better in avsforum.com or similar. The threads can be daunting, but if you are serious about maximizing your satisfaction, putting in the time in these can teach you a lot.
Here is a selection of posts that include some people's settings for your series of LCD (I believe). Of course, YMMV as each individual panel is different and no one size fits all.

This thread and the other of our pimping set ups got me thinking. Whats a good resource for getting the most out of you set up in terms of configuration etc. The AV forums give me a head ache.
Here is an example I have a 7.1 system, to date i have watched 1 Blu-Ray that has had native 7.1 support, that was Hell Boy2. Thus I never hear the end of it from the wife on why I wasted money on a 7.1 system. I suppose there must be a way to do something via my receiver to use all 7 channels but hell if I know.

I agree with your wife. 7.1 is pointless to me. Television doesn't broadcast in 7.1, most games and movies don't...it's just a waste of money to me.Danimal wrote:Thus I never hear the end of it from the wife on why I wasted money on a 7.1 system. Dolby Pro Logic IIx will matrix the source(including 5.1) to 7.1.
Most recent AVRs have PLIIx and/or DD EX or DTS ES which will do the same.
The limitation usually is the room, where most folks have a hard time placing the rear surrounds.
The lossless formats are increasingly 7.1 native, esp. DTS-MA HD.

I finally joined HD Nation this week. While I expected it to be nice, I now understand why some of you cats refuse to watch anything in SD anymore.
It's eye-poppingly nice. I've found myself watching shows of minimal interest to me just because they look so pretty in HD.

A bit different with HD. I always wanted one, never thought it was unnecessary like I did a DVR. I was wrong about the DVR, but thankfully I was gloriously right about HD. It's even better than I expected.RobVarak wrote:Some problem with the forum? This post from 5 years ago seems to have been recycled.pk500 wrote:I finally joined HD Nation this week. 360? Probably not. I really don't miss console gaming one bit other than the DSP fellowship during the zenith of the early days of XBL. I barely even touch the Wii unless the kids need a third for Rock Band.
Plus the churn of new titles for Poker Nights here is so ridiculous that I couldn't even stomach jumping back into consoles. Games that look ridiculously hot for DSP XBL play on release week resemble an icicle in Nome after three weeks. No go for me.
Games just don't have DSP legs around here anymore. Part of that is the glut of quality titles. There were so few Grade-A titles in the early days of XBL that we all congregated around two or three games every two or three months. But I think many of our lifestyles have changed in the last six or seven years, too. I definitely fall into that camp.

Sports in SD are just painful to watch once you get spoiled by HD. Our local Fox station isn't broadcast in HD, and it really sucks for the NFC playoffs.pk500 wrote:I finally joined HD Nation this week. When I first got HD service, there were only a handful of HD stations, and I found myself watching crap like "Red Dawn" and "Every Which Way But Loose" on HD Net because the picture was so impressive. That has to be a sign of mental illness
BTW, Madden league going strong since August and the Buffalo Bills are available. Just sayin'.

Hockey was the only team sport I ever liked online because it was the only one at the time that allowed multi-multi player.Brando70 wrote:BTW, Madden league going strong since August and the Buffalo Bills are available. Just sayin'.
I was always more of a racing/shooter gamer online. And I don't think I could ever return to console racing online now that I've done rFactor/iRacing, etc.
Racing snob? You bet. Guilty as charged.

After many hours of research,penny pinching,etc. i pulled the trigger on a 2010 Panasonic 50" G/25 plasma
that is due to be delivered tommorrow. I can't wait to see "The Show" on the ps3 in 1080p.
Now my question is in regards to my "launch" Xbox 360. This does not have a HDMI connection, but rather a component connection when I had it hooked up tto my 720p rear projection Sony,or a vga connection when I had it hooked up to the 24" Dell monitor which rendered a1900x1200 resolution,(i.e. 1080p or very close to that). The plasma has a vga connection, and since the tv has 1080p,will I be able to hook up the xbox via that connection to get 1080p? The component hookup is only capable of 1080i or 720p if I'm not mistaken. Any and all help as always will be much appreciated.
I feel like a kid at Xmas waiting for this tv!!

XBOX is capable of 1080p over component for games and VOD content, but not for HD-DVD, which is pretty much a moot point at this time. Of course, most games aren't native 1080p anyway so it depends on how good the scaler in your TV is versus the 360. VGA is also an option, if you prefer.snaz16 wrote:After many hours of research, penny pinching, etc. i pulled the trigger on a 2010 Panasonic 50" G/25 plasmathat is due to be delivered tommorrow. There are some IR (Image Retention) when I play games on my Sammy Plasma. It is just the way Plasma is, but it goes away if you switch to watching TV. Not a big deal IMO, but something to note so you don't get disappointed (and it is not permanent).

No image retention issues at all with my Panny plasma and Wii. My kids only play for an hour or two straight, tops, so I'm not talking all-night marathon sessions.

I'll use this thread and look for some AV help. Before I get to the problem let me explain my set up.
I have an Onyx that runs an HDMI cable to my Sony 1080P projector. Connected to the receiver are:
360 via component.
PS3 via HDMI
DTV HD Receiver via HDMI.
I watched the Hawks game Sunday night and everything was fine. Last night I turn on the 360 and play a game, no issues. I then switch to DTV and my screen is all green and it is showing a split screen at 1080P, other resolutions showed up to 4 screens. I thought possibly it was the DTV receiver because those things are crap.
I switch on the PS3 and I have the same issue, distorted resolution and green picture. So the 2 devices hooking in to the receiver via HDMi are screwed and the one via component is fine. I was too tired to mess with it last night.
I was hoping it was the HDMI cable from the Receiver to the Projector, but since it is working fine for the 360 (ie receiver is sending the signal to the projector via HDMI) I am starting to think it is the Receiver because the odds of 2 HDMI cables going out at once are 0%.
I guess my question after that long explanation is does anyone think I am not diagnosing this correctly. That's a $2000 receiver that is barely 3 years old.

This was my plan tonight.wco81 wrote:Well you could hook up one of those devices directly to the projector and see if the same thing happens or not, to rule out whether the receiver is causing the problem.
I just tried a bunch of Onkyo service places and they are telling me 6-8 weeks for repair.
Grr.

You could also swap the inputs on the receiver, move one of the "bad" sources to the input used by the 360, which is a "good" source.
That could point out that certain inputs in the receiver is bad.
Also have to see if it could be an HDMI handshake issue but in those cases, you just don't get a signal, not a corrupted one.

Well not that anyone cares but me but I went home last night turned everything back on and it all worked.
Maybe the Receiver was overheating I have no idea it was only on for an hour and I've run the thing for 8 hours before. Maybe its and issue about to rear it ugly head but for now I am fine.
