OT: Showtime's "Dexter"

Post by GameSeven »

For fans of Six Feet Under's Michael C. Hall, Showtime is airing a new series starring him as Dexter, a forensic "blood splatter" expert by day and a serial killer by night, preying on victims who are on the dark side of humanity themselves. It is adapted from the novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" and appears to be darkly comic with grisly overtones. Those interested can find more info at the following site:

Well this show wrapped it's first season last night and I'd have to say I was pretty impressed overall. I thought the show moved along at a good pace with plenty of well-defined story arcs. As a "Six Feet Under" fan, my wife and I began to watch it with interest in seeing how Michael C. Hall would followup his role on that show. 12 episodes later, we are big fans of the show although it'll be interesting to see if the second season can match the first as I think the shows creators have set the bar pretty high.

I'm not sure if many other DSP'ers caught this one, but I'd definitely recommend it to those who can catch the repeats or the inevitable DVD release.

Awesome show. Made me subscribe to Showtime after the first couple of eps. aired in a free preview.

Looks gorgeous in HD too.

Now the thing is whether to continue subscribing for the L Word. Tudors look kind of interesting but that might not be for months.

Weeds is a good show too on Showtime.

Caught the last 4 or 5 eps. of Weeds. Didn't see any of the first season though.

Saw the first ep. of Brotherhood, which was pretty good.

Sleeper Cell was good, kind of a would-be brainer 24, sympathetic to the moderate Muslim point of view, trying to delve into characters as individuals more than stereotypical jihadists.

The terrorists aren't stereotypes, they all have family ties and other things which could possibly draw them away from the jihad.

But I think they copped out a bit by having few Arab or Pakistani terrorists, to avoid offending those communities. Instead, most of them are American in makeup.

You don't get the "Oh come on" moments that you get in 24 (but you don't get nearly as much action either) but you hope the FBI isn't so incompetent as to let terrorists get so far along on their plot despite monitoring them for weeks and then only at the last minute foil the plots.

Holy thread bump... but Dexter, season 4 finale?

Wow. Just wow. 8O

Perhaps my favorite show on TV atm. Fantastic season and a brilliant adversary in John Lithgow.

I think I might still be in shock from watching it. And this might be an overreacting from it, but that might have been the best episode of any TV show ever! Well at least any that I've watch.

WOW!

Lot of fans were complaining all season about how Rita was a drag, getting in the way of what Dexter needed to do.

And Dexter was becoming a softie, talking about how big a deal his family was.

So it all seems a setup for the finale.

I hear you... Just seeing the bumped thread headline made me relive that final scene in my mind. It was definitely an ending that knocks the wind out of you, IMHO, and adds considerably more impact to Dexter's final conversation with Trinity as well.

I can only imagine the type of fallout that this twist is going to have.

Oh yeah, I went back and re-watched that scene with Trinity - wow, that f'er had some subtle clues in his comments and responses to Dexter's thoughts. Again, Lithgow was fantastic.

For anyone who has never seen the show (like me until very recently) and wants to catch up on the cheap, Netflix is now featuring Seasons 1 & 2 (and maybe 3, can't remember) on its streaming "Watch Instantly" format. I have watched most of the first season over the past 2 weeks. Great show!!!

Was telling a co-worker who is catching up on Netflix the same thing today... Season 4 was much more akin to seasons 1 and 2 in terms of tension/story. Plus while Jimmy Smits was admirable in season 3, the season 4 'Big Bad' was exceptional.

Yeah, I have heard a TON about how awesome it is, especially the big ending, which luckily I have NO idea what it is still. Looking forward to that being released for rental.

Okay, so WAY late to the party but...

I watched Season 1 when it was on network tv (last summer or something) and really got hooked. Problem was i never had the time or the means to continue watching. Now with NetFlix streaming i am 3/4 of the way through Season 2 and agree with all above sentiments. Unbelievable.

Problem for me is that i had a free couple of months of Showtime recently and like an idiot i watched the last few episodes of the most recent season so i know all about the shocking ending, but i'm looking forward to watching the next couple of seasons build up to it.

My question is whether anyone has actually read the books the series is based on. I wonder if it would be worthwhile as the character development, as outstanding as it is on tv, must be even better in writing.

I've read three of the four books, aside from the first book and season, they're nothing alike.

The books are enjoyable to read though

Finally got finished with Season 4 tonight and all I can say is, Wow! Dexter is my favorite show on the air right now, by far. Most shows that start off good hit their peak and start going downhill. Dexter is the first show I can remember where it keeps getting better and better 4 seasons in. I cannot wait until Season 5. At least I have Season 5 of Weeds to keep me busy.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.
