TOCA tonight... I can host if needed

Post by James_E »

Hi folks. I want to play (and host if needed) tonight. I'll be on around 10:30 or so, maybe earlier depending on how long my MVP league game takes.

I've got more unlocked now (44%). I sat down to do more last night but my relatives arrived.

I'll try and get on. With all this snow here I don't think I'll be doing much of anything else.

I'm in.

I'm also interested in some practice at around 9:30PM.

Hugo, I turned down your Splinter Cell invite last night because I don't have the game.

If you're not full, I'll come. I tried a couple random games last night and remembered why I don't do random games.

Never again.

Terry:

Funny you mention that. I checked my Friends list last night via PC and saw Zeppo, Mix, Fishy and lsdean playing Pandora Tomorrow. No room for me, so I pondered entering a random game of TOCA 2.

Thought again and kept the Xbox off, instead watching a cycling race I had on my DVR.

Like you, I have less and less tolerance for racing with Harvey Wallbangers unless they're friends. At least I know friends are trying to race clean and not playing bumper cars as a tactic.

Take care,
PK

Just out of curiousity, what has been people's experiences going up against other random gamers?

The first night I went online with this game, there were only 5 of us in the lobby. That left 4 AI opponents. These guys turned up the CPU ability from 85% to something like 103%. They played fair by the way....didn't have any problems except that I suck, but it was fun. Still, it's nice to have that familiarity with the guys you're racing with.

My problem is, I'm usually near the front. Not trying to brag at all, so please don't take it that way. Just a simple fact that in 99% of the races, I'm in the front or very near.

The average racer doesn't give two sh*ts about being clean. I get out front, and some of them are fast. They can't go around me unless I screw up, and about the 3rd lap they realize that probably won't happen. They barrel into a corner, punt me, and go "oops". Then again the next race. Then again.

The average random racer is fine while they're winning or doing whatever they're used to. When they get competition, they become Carl Jr. Do whatever it takes to get you out of the way, and I'm not down with that.

I would like to join in on the fun also! My gamertag is "JackB1".

I went online last night for the first time and it was a blast. Even though
I was joining random games, it was still quite a good time. The variety of cars and tracks is amazing. One track was even covered in snow & ice!
I added a bunch of you guys to my friends list, so please accept and add me back!

A few questions...
-How do I locate your game tonite, James?

- Are all you guys using the default control layout? What is best? I tried the right analog for gas/brake, but went back to the triggers so I could use both at once if needed to powerslide. What about shifting? I guess that has to be mapped to the face buttons. In NFSU, I would use the right analog for gas/brake & the triggers for shifting. It's tough getting used to a new control layout.

Looking forward to some racing tonite! I'll probably be on a little earlier than 10:30 EST if anyone want to give me a holler for some practice games.

JackB, just add me, Gamertag "JamesE" to your friends list.

When I log on, I'll start sending out invites to whoever is around.

After each race, I check my friends list, and if I have room, I send more invites. So, if you see me on, watch for an invite. It might take a few (10 minutes or more) before I can invite you if we're in the middle of a race, but if there is room I'll invite.

sounds good!

Is there a way to see if a race has begun before you click the "join" button? I didn't see any.

Hey Tim.....since u seem to be the "TOCA Guru" :)
can u give a "newbie" to TOCA some advice on mapping
the buttons? I noticed yoou can map anything u want
to the right analog. That might be a cool way to use the
shift up/down for non-auto transmission folks. Do u
recommend just using the default layout to start?

I don't know who Tim is, but I'll reply since I know some stuff about TOCA.

I map the R stick to shift up/shift down and it works fine (I map Clutch to the R stick button). I use A as my "look behind" button, B as my handbrake. The stick works fine as a shifter, you just can't "flick" it. That's the only problem I have occasionally; I'll flick the stick up, and on its way back down, it flips down a bit....essentially going from 2nd to 3rd and back to 2nd. You have to be precise with it to have it work well.

Bottom line: control configuration matters little. Learning throttle control, car performance, and tracks matters a lot. Do whatever works for you, control-wise.

That's funny TERRY. I have seen him call you Tim a few times and this is the first time you've actually noticed, or at least responded to it. LOL.

Whoops

Nope, I figured he was referring to somebody else in the thread. I always see posters calling people by their real names, but I can barely keep track of who's who. I actually thought there was a Tim here somewhere.

Got on late last night when most people from DSP were off-line and entered a random room, as I had a fix. Big mistake. Not that I care that much, but my rating dropped like 50 points, due to everybody crashing into me and not racing legit. Mst people have PGR2-itis where bumping and grinding is the norm. You absolutely can't do that in Toca. Will try to get on earlier tonight and look for you cats.
