Not a municipal location with an unblemished history of humanitarianism. LOL
First it is Munchen and you evidently have never been there. Quite a place. I just can't afford to live there!
Actually, I have. I love it as well...and really enjoyed it in the days when my German was passable. And as long as I'm speaking English, it's Munich.
I was suggesting that as long as one is tossing around stereotypes about fans, football clubs and cities, one may want to consider that one is supporting a team from the city that was the cradle of Naziism. Pardon me if my implication was too imprecise.

I think that Rob may be referring to the facts that
- Hitler was on a famous photograph of the main square on 1 August 1914, celebrating the start of the war.
- Hitler joined the DAP in 1919 while based in Munich.
- It was at the Burgerbraukeller in Nov 23 that Hitler launched the Beer Hall Putsch
- the Nazi Party's administrative HQ was at the Braunhaus in Munich.
Other than that, you would probably say that the focal point of the party was Nuremberg, particularly before the war started.
"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."
Well, maybe no city has given birth to anything as bad as the Nazis but there are Jewish ghettoes in several European cities and history of persecution and worse all over.
Also seems like more than a few clubs have ultras.
That's good, there's a quiz at the end of the week.

yup, my grandfather would basically tell me a history everytime I went to visit him. My great-grandfather actually was a part of the Nazis until he got the family out and over to the states back in the late 30s.
Is the Donovan loan official? Aren't there work permit issues and such to get through? I wish he would stay through the end of the season, but I guess he wants to be back in LA for the start of the MLS. Seems a bit silly to me, but I don't know.

He should be OK as he has presumably played 75% of the USA's recent games and they are currently ranked high enough in the FIFA rankings. Plus he'll be taking Jo's spot, presumably, so it's not like he's displacing a professional.....

Well, they were correct in this case.

According to the papers over here, the Glazers have declared that the club is not for sale.

Appears that Donovan is resigning with MLS and going to Everton this winter for a few months on loan.
With that new MLS contract, Donovan is probably staying in MLS indefinitely, unless he does very well at Everton and has a big WC to entice wealthy Euro teams to buy him (doubtful).

basically confirming that he will always want to be a big fish in a little pond.

Disagree with that to a point. He shows he can't play in Europe at a high level. He has had chances at Bayern then was it Frankfurt and the trials he's been given. Heck one could make an argument that there's better forwards in MLS than Donovan. And he's not even the best American player we have. I know that's not your argument Squid, but I would put Dempsey before Donovan as the best American player (non-GK) we have. Dempsey does more Fulham than Donovan does for LA and that's saying a lot considering what Dempsey has to work with and go up against.
Too bad Dempsey doesn't get more recognition. Though World Cup '10 might be the chance a young american has to break out and replace Donovan.
All I know is that when it's time to put on the USA shirt, Donovan can consistently perform on a level MUCH higher than any other US player, including Dempsey, can consistently produce. It's really not even close when you consider the full body of work. Of course not meant to slight Dempsey, who scored our only goal at WC 2006 and won an individual honor at the Confed Cup.
Would've like to see Donovan go to Europe in earnest on something other than a short term loan just to see what he could do, but oh well.
