wco81 wrote:Interesting discussion on 5 Live about proposals to restructure the EPL.

Ideas include bringing in Celtic and Ranger (lot of EPL fans don't want their sectarianism), salary cap, more equitable revenue-sharing, an EPL2 so that relegation isn't so economically punitive.

Even talk of a draft.

Wigan supposedly spends 90% of their "turnover" (revenues?) on player salaries. Other marginal EPL clubs are overspending and getting deep into debt, not to compete for the title but to avoid relegation. So getting into debt to settle for mediocrity.

Other big clubs in Europe such as Roma are struggling because they can't count on CL revenues.
Let's see

Celtic and Rangers - never. UEFA will oppose it as it will completely can the Scottish league, and both of those two are garbage teams who will go down.

Debt ? So what - clubs in Italy and Spain have been doing it for years, largely illegally.

Roma have been technically bankrupt for years, even when they won the Scudetto. They were bailed out by the bogus tax laws that Berlusconi brought in (described by the head of the Italian accountancy profession as 'a disgrace'), and were twice picked up for passing the financial guarantee criteria that are required in Italy through the use of forged documents listing non-existent deposits in overseas banks.

Draft - never happen, because unlike US sports there is no single point of entry.

Driving force is Bolton's chairman, Phil Garside. He's just trying to cover Bolton's backside if they go down, which I always hope they will, and perhaps take Dave Whelan's pie-eating ego bandwagon at Wigan with them, never to darken our door again.

When it's done in Italy and Spain it's not illegal.

It is if you are....

Using forged certificates to pass the viability test (Roma, Lazio, Parma et al)
Using massively over-valued transfers to take advantage of loopholes in the accounting treatment of player purchases (the so-called 'Plus-Valenze' system)
Embezzling shareholder funds to prop up team finances (Parma most notably)
Embezzling local authority funds to prop up team finances (a big 'rot in hell' to Jesus Gil at Atletico Madrid here)

If you have the chance don't miss replays of that insane Lyon-Marsaille match over the weekend - Sentanta is still showing them.

Chief Exec of the Premier League

But Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore told BBC Radio 5 live that the idea will not come to fruition.

"As regards to Celtic and Rangers it's a non-starter," he said. "So we've made a clear and unequivocal statement and we're going to move on from there. No means no.

"The clubs constitutionally voted to say we're not going to take this any further, Celtic and Rangers are not coming in."

So let's hear no more of Blue Bigot FC and their scum supporters (fined again today for their latest rampage in Europe), and let's restrict Green Bigot FC to their annual friendly love-in with Man U...and that's an end of it.

Apparently Rangers owe pots of money and might go bust. Bothered.

New Zealand have qualified for the World Cup after beating Bahrain 1-0 in Wellington. It would be cool if we get drawn in a group with one or more of England, Australia and America.

A wilder group would be New Zealand, England and South Africa.

Can Australia be group in with NZ because they are in the same region?

Because it would be the Anglo group or because those are easier teams to advance against?

Just cause of the Anglo-relations. I don't think NZ has a chance to get out of their group no matter what teams they are drawn against.
JRod wrote: Can Australia be group in with NZ because they are in the same region?
Australia are in the Asian region and NZ is from Oceania, so I don't think there are any rules stopping them being in the same World Cup group. If Australia hadn't left Oceania, NZ would almost certainly not have qualified for this World Cup because Australia are a much better team.

Nice to see Van Persie picking up an injury and that fat cheating dwarf pick up a 2 month ban (which is meaningless in the context of what fixtures Argentina have during the next 2 months).

All that for swearing at journalists. Good job he hasn't been taking performance enhancing drugs, or class A's, or being part of the worst team ever to make a WC final (in 1990), or been kicked out of a WC for cheating (WC 1994) or thrown a league title to pay off his friends in the Camorra (Napoli, 1988).

If Argentina wants to be competitive in SA, Julio Grondona must get rid of him. Now it's the perfect time.

Oh my God, Kyrgiakos is going to play in a World Cup.......for 34's sake I hope he gets injured before next Summer. To be fair, playing for Liverpool there's a good chance of that.

Well done Slovenia. Guus finally outdone!

Yup, sounds like France barely qualified over an opponent it should dominate.

Russia fall on their faces, Hiddink probably wishes he stayed at Chelsea.

US looking weak. Expectations for next year keep going down.

France 1 Ireland 1...and a disgraceful handball by Thierry Henry means that he will now be remembered (except by Arsenal fans) as a cheating wretch, who not only handled the ball but then controlled it before pulling back for Gallas to score in the 103rd minute. If Blatter has any serious intent to clean up the game, that match has to be replayed.

Wait, surely he has to ask his deputy and head of UEFA ? Oh yes, that will be M.Platini, wouldn't it ? He'll currently be back in his hotel room with 20 cigars and a towel wrapped round his head, feverishly trying to work out how to make England somehow responsible. By now he will have reached "Thierry Henry learnt to cheat in England's Premier League.."

Other than that, both teams were poor.

Despite the above, I'm not really a fan of Ireland or the graceless manner in which they play. My righteous annoyance at the cheating French was also somewhat cooled by turning to Sky Sports and listening to Tony Cascarino berating the blatant cheating etc etc.

This would be the same Tony Cascarino who admitted that he had played for the Republic under false pretences, having lied about his grandmother being Irish ? Good job he's completely irreproachable then....oh, right.

The officials completely missed the hand ball?

Do the talk of the video replay include infractions like this?

And is there precedent for replaying matches?

No matter, France doesn't seem to be much of a threat next year. The poor play they showed in other qualifying matches seems indicative of what they're about.

In the order they were asked...

A) Yes - not one but two. To be fair, it was on the opposite side of the pitch to the linesman, and there were players between the ref and Henry. However, it may well be that if there had been 4 linesmen, it would have been spotted.

B) Video replay is not yet part of soccer decision making. If FIFA adopted even a replay system like Rugby League or Union, then this would have been looked at owing to the contentious nature of the decision.

C) From memory, there was an FA Cup game between Arsenal and someone (Sheff Utd ?) where Arsenal won in somewhat controversial circumstances and then Wenger offered to replay the game. I'd really have to dig to find any more, certainly in Europe.

As for France, I wouldn't go writing any team off now for the 2010 cup, who knows what injuries may occur or new players that may break through ?

Forgot to mention that, Henry was offside in the first place. Blown calls everywhere.

So disappointed that the Bosnians couldn't do world football a favor and keep the Portugese home for the finals. I went into that playoff with half a mind toward wanting Portgual to qualify. "Best tournament needs the best teams" and all of that...

Then 20 minutes into the first leg I was reminded of the "style" of play that they displayed in Germany and wished them banished to Elba for the duration.

Nothing to be said about the France debacle. Sad, really. Look at the bright side, Greece will be in South Africa to do their part to set the game back another 40 years.

Arsenal replayed a FA Cup match after Kanu didn't return the ball to the Pigs following them kicking the ball out of play to have a player get treatment.

Knew it was summat like that - I had Steve Bruce's ugly mush in my mind when he was talking about Wenger offering to replay it.

Ireland are about to formally request that FIFA order the game to be replayed. You can bet that if it was the other way round we'd already have the date and venue, but nothing will happen with this request if it is ever made.

Oh, and a quick note for those Irish fans who are the most anti-English. You remember laughing when that fat cheating dwarf knocked England out of the 1986 WC with his hand ? Not so f**king funny now, is it ? :P

Story is getting played even on a local morning show out here -- the hosts are Irish.

Unless France wins it all, the victory will not be worth the damage to Henry's reputation.

Even if they win it all, it's probably not worth it to him personally.

Well at least he didn't come up with some lame excuse about Hand of God ...

EDIT: Oh and I'd cut the Irish a bit of slack for their schadenfreude since they were colonized by the English.
