Do we know when the player progression / regression occurs? Are we going to do the FA release and draft after that?

I've gone through one entire offseason already in the Bottom 8. The retirements can be viewed immediately after the Super Bowl. You won't see progression as a +/- number, but you'll see the new ratings of players at that time. Unless you have a little spreadsheet of your team, you won't really know everybody's individual progression. However, you'll be able to see their current rating before doing any FA or Draft moves.

Terry that's useful information. Did your league do anything with FA like we're going to try and do?

I'm starting to wonder if the work is going to be worth it. No way to tell until going through it once but if the FA draft doesn't result in good players moving around and just mediocre players then it might be kind of pointless.

Anyway just thinking out loud

We completely pirated your idea, yeah.

We all released 1-80+, 1-70+, and 2-60+ players. Then we had the NFL Draft.

After that, we did the 4-round FA draft to fill up holes. Our FA draft was a snake draft in reverse order of finish for round 1.

I think if we have to make FA decisions after retirements and progression (which sounds like the case), it'll actually be better. It'll likely make it harder to just dump older players who have higher ratings. At the same time, I think it makes sense to keep the top OVR release at 80 instead of higher. That way people don't have to release their franchise players, but useful FAs will still be out there. And with only having to release four players, it shouldn't be too much of a nightmare to track.

How will CPU FAs be handled? Can you go in and release their required players?

CPU teams were left entirely alone. Our thought was that CPU teams get the shaft in general--they get massacred by humans most games. So we let them build their team as well as they could to compete better.

That's a good point, and it would make the FA process easier. They also must release some FAs to make room for their draft picks.

I would say I liked the tougher, higher standards of the original FA draft idea if only because I was afraid of having to release such good players and was dreading it. Well, I figured, if I'm dreading it, so too must everyone else, so it'll probably turn out really well.

But this one should at least do something to move players around.

I'm very curious to see if the draft class ends up raising the overall level of talent a lot, and if that will only get worse in future seasons. I'm also curious to see how big the ratings jumps up and down of veterans will be. Should be cool.

And Scoop, get back to me on that Ed Reed thing. Heck, I'll take Flacco, too. Or now that I mention it, Drew Brees if no one is listening.

One more question: how does the draft work? Do we all have to be there? Can some people set their priorities and let the machine select while others are doing it live, or is it only all-live or all-priority list style?

You can pre-rank players, but that appears to be really wonky. You can also draft from the website and not on the console, but that appears wonky too.

We had a guy with the #1 overall choice (he went 0-16 with the Chiefs) and he pre-ranked the best overall QB on the board at 1. He wasn't online when the draft started and they took a 75-rated OLB or something (the QB was an 81 or 82 I think).

Bottom line, if you really want to get your best players, attend the draft.

I like this, I was going to do FA release, FA draft then Rookie Draft but I like this idea better. Also as stated I am not doing anything with CPU teams I don't have that much time. FWIW Jared had an absolutely great idea for FA but it requires some serious leg work since there is no way to dump all the player info into a spreadsheet and I don't have the kind of time needed...just call me a lazy commish.

So for all those wondering we'll do it like above:

1. FA release
2. Rookie Draft
3. 4 Round FA draft

Do we have an idea when the FA release will happen? Will we have a window to do that (e.g. Mon thru Wed next week?).

I'm picturing something like...
FA Release Mon-Wed
Rookie Draft Friday (to give people a chance to scout the pool)
4 Round FA draft ???

Is this the kinda thing you're looking to do? Also are we going to have a Season 2 Rules document or post that summarizes all this??? I don't mind putting that together but I figured the commish board would probably be the definitive source. I just don't want to miss something small and for any possible new coaches coming back it'll make things easier. Just FWIW.

Without Chris Johnson, Titans struggle on offense--lose AFC Championship 34-7 to Raiders

The Titans came into Oakland with a confident rushing attack, led by All-World tailback Chris Johnson. Johnson carried 5 times for 22 yards and was lost for the game in the first quarter. The Titans were stuffed on 4th and goal from the 1 yard line on the drive, already trailing a quick-striking Raiders team (led by Darren McFadden's 11 carries for 171 yards and 2 TD's in the game) 7-0.

The Raiders took the ensuing possession 99 yards for a 14-0 lead and the route was on.

JaMarcus Russell had a perfect 158.3 rating on the day, completing all 5 attempts for 67 yards and a TD. Jeff Garcia went 3 of 4 for 56 yards in spot duty.

Kerry Collins had a miserable day, however, compiling 76 yards on 6 of 14 passing, with 2 interceptions and a 20.8 rating.

The day belonged to the Raiders, but they know that the game wasn't indicative of either the talent or coaching difference.

"They lost Johnson on their first possession and they had driven the length of the field. It's a completely different offense to scheme against without #28 in there", Coach Crouch commented after the game. "We'll face off against next season and it will be a vastly different game. They were well coached and played sound football, but when so much of your offense revolves around a guy who's lost on the opening possession, you are really fighting uphill the rest of the day."

Oakland will play in Super Bowl XLIV against either the Falcons or Vikings next week.

**************************

Good game, man. I felt both happy and sick that Johnson was lost. I can't lie, I wasn't sad that I didn't have to try to contain him for the rest of the game, but it really screwed you over. Congrats on a good season and knocking off those Dolphins. That was a season-making type of game. Maybe your cyber athletes had a bit of an emotional letdown after a big one like that

AFC Championship goes to Oakland

Post by tmdba37 »

Raiders 34 Titans 7

The Raiders win the AFC Title and advance to Super Bowl XLIV.

Oakland combined their lethal run game and their dominating pass defense to march up and down the field on the Titans.

The Titans lost Chris Johnshon with a broken wrist on the last play of the 1st Quarter and the Titans also missed on three attempts to get in the endzone from inside the 5. . .this led to a turnover on downs at the one and a subsequent 99 yard TD drive and the rout was on. . .

The star of the game was Darren McFadden who ran 11 times for 171 yards. and 2 TDs.

The lone bright spot for the Titans was a 70 yard TD run from LenDale White late in the game. . .

Basically, the game plan went out the window with the Chris Johnson injury as the Titans tried going to the air and really faltered either missing open receivers or getting balls picked off--the Raiders had three INTs in total and one was a pick six. . .

With the loss, the Titans take solace in a great season and will try to make the right improvements to get back to the Super Bowl. . .

The Raiders look to continue their winning ways against the victor of the NFC Title game between the Falcons and the Vikings. . .the Super Bowl should be a great matchup in the coming week or so. . .

Terry,

Good game and good luck in the Super Bowl. . .

We'll make sure Chris Johnson gets all of his stretching and treatments in before we play in the season two regular season. . . :)

Thanks

Using this thread instead of exclusively using PM's helps in some cases as well. Even if it's just "sent you a PM". That way guys aren't in limbo.

As far as Danimal and the rest of us knew (and Truth, too, apparently), he asked when the game could be played and got no response to this point. The PM system is wacky sometimes, and it's too easy to miss the '1 new message' thing at the top in most cases, even if it does come across.

Sorry abut that guys. I've been using PMs throughout the first season without issue. I'll use the thread in addition to PMs in the future. See you tonight Truth.

Damn right it was. This may have been the first videogame I've ever followed by frantically checking status updates on XBL! LOL
