Supposedly, you can hit some goals well outside the box with the control shot and the left stick to bend it. But yeah, I see those sailing high more often than not.

In OTP games at least, it's still the best to get into the box, although it's definitely harder to evade defenders than in 09.

But it seems you get more shots hitting the post this year, with a lot of caroms coming off at weird angles, like you shoot from the left of the goal and hit the right post but the ball bounces back towards the left of the goal.

One game, I had 10 shots on goal but only 1 or 2 goals and at least 3 shots which hit the post.

There's no point in shooting from outside the box, because the area about 5-10 yard from the box is just as well-defended, with midfielders and forwards dropping back to defend, as inside the box itself. Lot of goal situations still occur on counterattack runs resulting from turnovers. So with a good run going, no need to shoot early unless the goalie comes out aggressively.

One thing that still bothers me about this series is that a lot of defending against the AI consists of getting a players and stripping the ball off as the attacking player runs forward in a straight line. There's something a bit odd about how often that happens.

I'm also not enamored with how difficult it is to cross on manual. It always seems like the stick ends up being slightly out of position and the cross ends up ridiculously off target - trying to cross near the 6 yard box the cross ends up half way to center.

Best wishes

What a run by Cheater Beware FC tonight!

We took down the #5 ranked team in North America tonight with 2 goals in the last 5 minutes.

What a victory!

Great fun tonight guys. 7 of us playing tonight...what a rush.

Can't wait to do it again!

The best thing to do is just hop into the party. The guys playing will let you know how much time is left and when to meet up in the dressing room.

Don't be shy!

As I have learned, if you see everyone online and you want to play, join their party and say you want to play. Everyone will let you know when their current game is over so you can hop on for the start of the next one.

It's easier this way because the XBL status updates aren't always accurate. I've tried to time it by waiting for the status to show they are out of a game, and often times they are already well into a new one already.

First off, I finally got the 360 version from Gamefly and it is very good. I really like the fighting for space aspect as it finally seems as if you can keep the ball in tight spaces without having to pass as quickly as possible for fear of losing the ball so easily. Such a little thing opens the game up so much. I'm definitely interested in partaking in some OTP excellence in the near future.

Secondly, has anyone tried the Wii version? I checked it out and was surprised at how much fun it was. Where 09 tried to mimic what Pro Evo did on the Wii, 10 takes a lot of the 360/PS3 versions and adds a bit of an arcade flare to it. The result is a very fun game of soccer and a very nice compliment to the 360/PS3 versions.

Corners and set pieces all come down to timing. During a corner all you have to do is press the B button to center the ball (or A to pass it if that's what you want to do) and when the ball gets close to the middle it will flash green. At that point you have to shake the Wiimote. The first one who registers the shake wins the challenge. On free kicks you press the shoot button and on offense you shake the Wiimote when you're approaching the ball. The closer you are to the ball without starting the kick the better you will strike it. To make the save the team on defense needs to shake the Wiimote when the ball flashes green. The better the strike by the offensive player, the less time the goalie has to respond to the green flash. It all works very well.

There are some touches like the game going into slow-motion before a big shot that can't be turned off. It's a lot of what adds to the arcadey feel but it didn't bother me much. I was very surprised at how much fun this game was on the Wii.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

I know the many, many problems in Manager Mode have been documented but it hasn't been until recently that I've encountered them. Now that I've taken Norwich from League One into the Premier League and the UEFA Cup I've had my fill of absolutely atrocious errors. Some of my recent favourites;

i) 2 Matches Scheduled on the SAME DAY
- yes, I played Arsenal in the FA Cup on a Saturday, and right afterwards I played Wigan! Of course, the Wigan match didn't show up on the 'Calendar' and my starters were at pretty much zero energy for the start of the game (since they'd just played a game RIGHT BEFORE IT)
- Of course, this hasn't been an isolated incident, it's happened every FA Cup weekend, most notably when I had a UEFA Cup/Europa League game on the Thursday. So basically I played three games in three days, with full fatigue

ii) I am now a 4.5 star manager, I'm second in the EPL, I'm in Europe and still I can't buy players. All of my good players are from my scouting (which I maxed at 10/10) so I'm limited to players in the high 70s in overall ability. Even free-agent players won't sign with me. For the past TWO SEASONS I've tried to sign Damien Plessis but I guess he would rather not get paid for two years than sign with me. I know I'm Norwich but under me they are now a 4 star team yet I can't even get players from the Championship!
- Hell, even my own players won't re-sign with me, but that's not a problem since they automatically re-sign at the end of the season and for significantly less than I offered them earlier!

iii) Aggregate Wins that are Losses
- I played Hamburg in the UEFA Cup/Europa Whatever (as a Liverpool fan I guess I should know what this is called), played in Hamburg and won 2-1.
- came back to Norwich and lost 1-0 at home
- so that's 2-2 on aggregate but I should have won since I got TWO away goals
- not so, I got knocked out and the board is pissed off at me because they expected me to get to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup - even though last year I wasn't even in the f***in premier league (I got into the UEFA Cup by winning the League Cup.....the final of which was played over two legs......).

iv) Almost none of the passing/assists I get/make with my virtual pro in the Manager Mode count. My virtual pro has 15 assists this season alone and yet in the 'Accomplishments' when you add up my progress in assists from lobbed passes, through passes and 'ground passes' - it comes in at 11. WTF?

v) What's up with the CPU rosters? Why is Nani captaining Man U? Likewise, Aurelio is the captain of Liverpool and Joe Cole captain of Chelsea?

There are a ton more and they didn't seem to be so prevalent in the lower leagues but after two seasons of promotions to the EPL it's now very apparent. What prompted this post was seeing the new in-game ad-boards that are promoting the FIFA 2010 Ultimate Team Mode that's coming out soon - that's right, those f***ers will have no problem charging for an extra game mode but won't move a finger to fix these existing problems.

Almost makes me want to go pick up Pro Evo........or I'll just remove the shrink-wrap from the copy of Dragon Age that's been staring at me on my coffee table.....

Macca,

Come join us for OTP. After struggling with the inherently broken clubs for months, it's absolutely divine!!

Call me crazy but the demo plays much better on the PS3 then it does on my 360. I actually like this game on the PS3 that it just may be a purchase for me even though I recently picked up PES 10 for my 360.

I'm a masochist so I finished up my season with Norwich (taking the title) and since I was now a '5 Star' manager I got my pick of plum management jobs for the following season.

I saw Real Madrid had a budget of 240 million pounds so I thought "sweet" and jumped ship.

The moment I took control of the club they suddenly went from 240 million in the black to TWO BILLION pounds in debt. Billion. With a 'b'.

Bravo EA Sports, Bravo!

EDIT: I went back and tried taking the Juventus job - same deal. So pretty much you stay with your club or you're f***ed.

It seems like Clubs are dead around here with this group. The game just isn't set up well, because the non-human controlled players are all super bad - like worse than the default Winning Eleven Master League stiffs - so defending is impossibly frustrating. The Indiana boys and Rob are washing their hands of it.

Regular OTP seems to be the flavor of the month now. Plus we can do two-anys in regular OTP, so when Rob and I play together we can both be happily defending as a team, just how we like it! :)
