Rod, commentary is Tyler and Gray as usual. I see that in the IGN review they say otherwise - Clive Tyldesley (note to IGN: that's his name) isn't in it, nor is he available as a downloadable extra this year, and it should be noted that Tyler's name still pops up on screen before every single bloody match.

In single player mode I haven't found a way to block the goalkeeper's kicks deliberately - it's the first thing I check for, a habit stretching back to the first FIFA on the SNES (for some reason on the Mega Drive/Genesis version I could never line it up right), where blocking the keeper was the main way to score. You've got more control of your players around the goalie than in previous years but the game feels like it's preventing you getting too close, as Rod says. I haven't played online, though. I suppose it could be exploited, but ordinarily I'd throw the ball out anyway, and I should probably mention at this point that you've got far more chance of building an attack if your 'keeper throws instead of kicking.

Zlax, I haven't scored a game since I wrote for ye olde Calvert Games and hated having to do it then. I'll say instead that while there are issues - it really is too easy to chip the goalie, the default settings do make quick one-touch passing a bit too easy, some of the manager mode behaviour (disappearing players, squad members being sold without you saying so) is a bit strange but is due to be patched shortly - the demo is a fair representation of the improvements made to tackling, long passing, crossing and shooting, and it is a definite step on from last year's release.

So on the whole, what do you think of the game?

Well...
GB_Simo wrote:the game generally is the most fun I've had with any football game. The way the players interact with each other, what feels like a better working of the advantage rule, the realisation that if I'm sliding to block a shot and catch the man after he shoots it's not a penalty, free kicks I can make some sense of (oh, and creating your own is fun though it's too early for me to tell if it makes any difference, or how it could be exploited), the tighter control - it's a step on from last year pretty much everywhere on the pitch.
GB_Simo wrote:it's very easy to play one-touch football as long as you've got someone available to pass to, but there'll come a point in each move where you've got no choice but to hang on to the ball and do something a little more considered. I don't see anything in the game that I consider unrealistic as far as that's concerned, and the same goes for the defense being too strong - again, I'm on World Class and don't feel that's the case at all.

...on balance, I'd tend to agree with what that bloke said. To be honest, unless there are specifics you want an opinion on that I'm yet to address, I don't really have anything much to add to what I've said so far, mate.

If what you're looking for is opinion on the game modes, I haven't played any Be A Pro at all yet. Manager mode is improved, certainly - the transfer system is better, the stat tracking better, the board expectations fleshed out with analysis of the matches you've played (best win, most surprising win, most embarrassing defeat and so on) - but hard to assess any more fully than that until the bugs are ironed out. I've done nothing at all online, and I'm not really wanting to throw MS points at Live Season so have no idea if that's improved.

My issue with Fifa is that If I decide to player lesser rated teams, the players stats were lessen automatically as well as the gameplay imbalance. Maybe so, but If I play with a division 2 team, there's got to be a star in that team where I shouldn't be pushed off the ball so easily, in other words EA shouldn't automatically lower the strenght and pace of the game because it just happens to be a division 2 game.

Playing top teams, it plays a nice game of footie.

I look forward to 10 though, EA has just sent me a confirmation that the game was shipped as I used their B-day coupon a couple of weeks ago.

Please tell me that stupid crab/leprechaun-kick cutscene during substitutions is finally gone. For some reason I find it eve more annoying than the multiple man-mounting goal celebrations in the old PS2 Winning Eleven games...

Cool to hear 10's that means my game should be shipping as well. I'll need to check my email to see if it was shipped.

Not for me, no. A page or two back I highlighted the AI's tendency to fire laser-guided free kicks, but in normal play you won't give away that many free kicks in dangerous areas. The chipping issue is well documented, and the videos I posted demonstrate that it's there, but again it's not something that happens every match and you still have to execute it.

That's not to say that they won't kill the enjoyment for someone, mind. For me, though, no.

Holy crap.

This game controls so much better then any version I have ever played. I don't feel like i am fighting the controls anymore. So many little things different i wouldn't know where to start.

I had only played 08 and 09 just briefly because I've always been a PES guy...but holy crap 10 has improved a lot. The control alone is night and day.

First thing I noticed. I set everything to manual and wow is that a joy to play. I lost 1-0 to Torquay as Man City.

I see so many little things like Adebayour ducking to miss an incoming shot. Or some amazing attempts at volleys going oh so near.

In 30 minutes with the game, I am impressed with it.

On the flip side, bad teams are still too good.

I have always like PES more than FIFA, even last year. For some reason I feel like PES controls better and feels more like football than FIFA. However, after playing FIFA 10 today I have to say that this is an outstanding game of football. The control is outstanding and feels so natural to me. The passing is intuitive and responsive. Most importantly, my teammates go where they are supposed to for the most part. That has been a big gripe of mine regarding FIFA in the past. It seemed like I was always playing with several retards on my squad. In FIFA 10 the AI is quite a bit better than past iterations of the game.

I have not played enough to see what the difference is like between the skill level of squads and players. That has been another sticking point with me when it comes to FIFA. I am hoping the squads and players have a diversity in styles and skill levels. I played a few matches in the Championship, and they felt good, so I will try some Barclay's matches here in a bit for the sake of comparison.

On the downside, the colors appear a bit washed out to me. I do not think the graphics are all that special other than the game animates smoothly, thankfully. Overall, I like what I see so far. FIFA 10 is a more realistic representation of football than PES 2009. Obviously I have yet to play PES 2010, but it is going to have to be a pretty big step up to top FIFA 10. I am now seeing what all the fuss was about in the press regarding FIFA 10. It truly is the best FIFA yet, beyond any shadow of a doubt. Well, back to more FIFA 10, where I can see my night will be spent.

The game is incredibly fluid and the player control is just perfect. One nice touch is that it seems like the computer will adjust to your settings if you go with manual passing, so that you aren't operating at an inherent disadvantage. The game really has a nice flow. I've only had a chance to get a couple of matches in, but Liverpool was consistently trying to cross the ball in while Barca was maintaining possession with short area passes, so that's promising. (I'm spoiled from playing Madden in team tendency regards.)

I liked the PES 10 demo much more than anything Konami has put out in the last three years or so, but I don't see it competing with FIFA.

I don't know if anyone else has had this happen, but I have now had two freezes in the middle of matches, where I had to reset my entire system (360). I have not had a game freeze on me in a long time, so I doubt if it is my system. Both times the game froze I was getting ready to cross a ball into the box from the right side.

No freezes so far (crosses fingers) while playing two quick matches. Since it's superclasico this weekend in Argentina, I played my beloved Boca Juniors against River Plate. Very smooth, passing is very nice but I am still losing the odd ball with ease while trying to guard the ball. Funny the refs are not calling the AI's challenges, while mine are at about 90% of the times.

While the crowd is beautifully played in the game, I would have liked to see more of at atmosphere at 'La Bombonera'.

Graphically I don't see any changes from last year, which is pretty good but based on a few players' model and the PES demo, I am inclined to say that Konami does a more accurate job of creating some of the player faces.

Have been playing offline for 8 minutes a half at slow speed and dynamic camera which I really like. Do wish the CPU would be more creative when it comes to aerial balls, the crosses have the same feel and predictability (Banana effect). If they changed the pace more often, like not having all the players sprinting all the time, chip the ball, lob etc.

With the full 360 degree control, I still have to learn a few moves mainly dribbling and the player individuality is still not that noticeable for me. Messi controlling the ball should be better than a Mascherano.

Overall, I am enjoying it.

I am having the opposite experience as 10spro regarding the refs. Most matches I am getting 0 yellows, and sometimes 0 fouls, while the CPU is getting plenty called on it. The stats between me and my opponents are otherwise fairly even in terms of shots on goal, possession, and passing pct.

The shooting is improved this year to the extent that I actually enjoy shooting now. I have already scored some goals with Lovenkrands that were just downright sweet. One thing I need to do is learn to use the special dribbling moves more because it seems like the defense mark their men more closely than before, resulting in more turnovers. I cannot say enough good things about how well this game controls.

I have zoomed the camera in quite a bit and lowered the height. This gives a more immersive feel to the game, without being zoomed in so far that you cannot get a good view of the overall pitch. The default camera zoom and height had me squinting trying to see the ball.

I am through with the friendlies in manager mode and ready to start the league matches using Newcastle. Manager mode looks pretty cool so far, with lots of activity on the transfer front.
