Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 Announced
Moderators: Bill_Abner, ScoopBrady
Something must have been going on with my HDD, thus the herky jerky feel I mentioned earlier. I played the demo again and it wasn't stuttering, so that's a good thing. I played the FIFA 10 demo too, and then alternated the two games, doing two matches each back to back. I like the responsiveness of the controls in PES better, as well as the match flow. FIFA, however, controls nicely too and feels good. A demo is not the best way to judge AI, but based on what I have seen FIFA's AI is not as strong as that of PES. The defensive AI of FIFA is going to be what kills it for me unless the final product is markedly better. I am looking forward to seeing the released versions of both games. Seeing as how great PES 2009 is on the Wii, I may just get the Wii version of PES 2010 and 360 version of FIFA. having two quality soccer titles is never a bad thing.
That's what's always been lacking in FIFA, defensive AI. It's as if EA puts the defensive AI in semi automatic whereas the AI in PES is in auto mode. I've always found the AI in PES to be superior to what FIFA has put out. With that said the AI in FIFA has come along way but still PES feels more organic. The big problem with PES last year was the speed of the gameplay. It was way too fast. I overlooked it because I had the PC version with the GA Community mods which made the game 200% better.
Looking forward to PES 2010 on the PC this year.

Wow. i've not said this before. This PES is great looking. I love the look of this game. I love the camera angle, the lighting, the replays... I don't agree with the responsiveness being better than the Fifa demo, I found myself thinking just the opposite. When in possession it feels as if the ball has been coated in glue. You need to sit on the A button to get a pass with any pace. I think the through ball is under powered as well. Or, maybe they just need to mow the pitch
Anyway, If nothing else, after a couple of matches it appears as if Seabass has finally gotten the ship pointed in the right direction. Albeit a few years later than Fifa.

I do like the responsiveness of FIFA a little better. But playing the PES demo (on 4-star) it felt like the defensive AI was quite a bit tighter. I had to struggle a bit to get good chances, whereas they felt too easy in my limited games with FIFA. I couldn't find a difficulty option for the FIFA demo though, so maybe that's my problem?

When you first fire up the fifa demo it will ask for your country, then your skill level. You can move to the right to select a different difficulty level.

Yup the very next question what type of gamer do you consider yourself to be: that's where you choose how difficult you want it to be.FifaInspected wrote:Jared,Jared wrote:I do like the responsiveness of FIFA a little better. Gee.. How nice is it to have Radar that is usable? I'm not sure why FIFA can't give us a decent radar.. I mean, how hard can it be. Colored dots that we can see clearly!
I just scored on a missle from around 23 yards with Liverpool.
I'm digging this... alot. Looks like it could be a 2 soccer game fall for me.

Ahh, ok. I picked the most advanced gamer setting, and it still felt relatively easy. However, I only played two games, so maybe it was just luck?Rodster wrote:Yup the very next question what type of gamer do you consider yourself to be: that's where you choose how difficult you want it to be.FifaInspected wrote:Jared,Jared wrote:I do like the responsiveness of FIFA a little better. I did have a beautiful animation where Anelka had to jog backwards and jump back a bit to hit a glancing header into the far corner...it was beautiful.
Had a chance to play the demo and I love it. Graphically it looks awesome. I prefer the player animations as well as defensive and offensive AI play. I dig the Game Plan feature as well. I got faked out of my boots by Messi in front of the goal. The game speed is still a tad to fast but feels a little slower than last year.
Compared to FIFA which I think is still top notch I prefer PES, feels more organic. I think i'll get the PES 2010 (360) version as well as the PC version because of the mod community. FIFA plays and feels like FIFA 09 with new box art which is not a bad thing, just can't justify the $60 bones.

I think Fifa feels and plays a lot different than 09. Ball physics alone are a world apart. A more realistic pitch (in regards to ball roll) More responsive players, shooting is better (it's not as easy) I think the list of improvements goes on....
I will also admit that (based on the demo's) I think both games are different enough and good enough to warrant buying both.

I may need to try it again but I guess I just suffer from Maddenitis where it's really hard to tell the difference between yearly releases unless they pronounced.FifaInspected wrote:Rodster - I'll have to disagree with you on the last part of your quoteRodster wrote:Had a chance to play the demo and I love it. I really hope there's some reworked AI because last year PES was just boring to play. I did a lot of BAP and it was just dreadful how they would simply not send crosses or anything into the box. It if wasn't a sure thing, many times they would just dink it around.
ML seems mostly the same. They think adding youth players is going to liven things up. Come on.

Played a couple of games and from what I saw, I can't say the AI has improved from the CPU. They still like to pass it around a lot, instead of trying to send the odd ball across, but maybe that's because of Barca's style I thought. Having said that, I though the overall pace of the game is just right, if I was really picky I would say on the quick side but very playable.
I always preferred the through balls on PES in comparison to Fifa and it's well done again. Visually is where I see the most dramatic change from last year, I may be tempted to give this game more time than what I originally thought.

Someone dig up that old post from Konami when it first talked about pes10, how it was going to be a massive overhaul and all that and a bag of chips well this is 2 years in a row now , seems like another minute step forward nothing more.
Not even considering footy games this year sorry they just arnt doing it for me.
The only thing i really like in any of the games is Fifas manual passing its the only time i get a feeling of what its really like on the field its weird and hurts my enjoyment of the games anymore but with 40 yrs experience on the pitch i cant help it.

Played about 6 or 7 games in one player mode and generally positive reaction. Player positioning looks markedly better than last year (full backs seem to be back) with fewer wide open spaces down the flanks and less bunching in the centre. Looks like the ball has to be played around a bit to try and create space rather than having it handed to you. Movement off the ball looks particularly vibrant. The sun around that Anfield goalmouth is probably brilliant technically speaking but I find it a bit overdone. Can't see a thing. And I think the pace of the game is on the high side. I'd prefer to see a slower final product. Don't know if that's a possibility this late in the day. Seem to be a fair bit of concern about keepers palming out shots into the path of inrushing forwards on a site I particularly like. Here's the link in case anyone who hasn't been there wants to check it out: http://peschronicles.co.uk/
Watched the CPU play itself in a few matches with the PC demo (I don't have a joystick installed) and my reaction is definitely mixed. The faces and player models are jaw-dropping. There are a ton of new, great animations and cut scenes. On the other hand the overall pace seems far too fast, some very strange AI lapses (defenders glued to a spot turning and watching a runner go past), dribbling on a string, and the bizarre sasquatch-ish running animation.
Oh the irony, this year I may be picking up FIFA for the gameplay and PES for the eye candy.

The Eurogamer review is out. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/pes-2 ... cer-review
"Improved graphics, streamlined tactical options and a relatively robust take on the series' winning formula ensure that this is the best PES yet, though it's not quite enough to topple FIFA from its well-earned perch. On the pitch it’s the same joyous game that’s won so many plaudits in the past, its fast-paced approach encouraging the sort of outlandish play that means nearly every match is a classic, and while this is some way off being the all-round package offered by EA, it’s probably the most fun way to play football with a controller available."

That is from the IGN UK review of PES 10 (8.7/10), which is more kind than the one at Eurogamer. Supposedly the finished game is quite a bit smoother than the demo, which is encouraging news.

Yeah, when it comes to soccer and hockey games I have found that reviews can be a fairly piss-poor way of getting meaningful information. A good part of that reason is that there is a lot of ignorance about those sports since not too many reviewers are diehard fans of either. When I read a soccer or hockey review I try to keep in mind that the viewpoint is that of a casual or non-fan of the sport, which is not the best source for a person who is a big follower of the sport. Sometimes that results in the game with the most accoutrements getting the higher score than the game that is actually a better representation of the sport. In regard to this year's soccer games, I already have both pre-ordered. I am getting PES for its Master League and Champions League features, and FIFA 10 so that I can play with my crap teams that got relegated. Hopefully the gameplay of both is good.
